20 years later Sparta football is
still thriving: Posting a record of three wins, six losses and one tie would be
enough to make any coach begin questioning his future. But in 1971, with a
small and inexperienced team, Sparta Academy coaches were happy to just be
competing.
Sept. 1, 1971, the
Sparta Academy Warriors took to the gridiron for the first time. It would be
the beginning of a new experience for the faithful of the private school.
Fielding a team of
28 players, the Warriors were led by Head Coach Mike Goneke and Asst. Coach
Robert Andress. In an interview with The Evergreen Courant, Coach Goneke, who
also served as headmaster of the school, said “desire” was the biggest thing
the players had going for them.
The Warriors first
team consisted of Gary McInvale, Larry Darby, Danny Baggett, Karl Baggett,
Charles Ward, Robert Carleton, Bruce Hutcheson, Jerry Cotton, Will Ward, Jack
Baggett, Buddy Monroe, Dwight Watson, Joey Nix, Tubby McInvale, George Baggett,
Danny Harper, Chestley Miniard, Jeff Nichols, Donnie Griggers, Gary Gibson,
Mike Turner, Mike McKenzie, Forrest Brantley, Don Owens, David Daniels, Mark
Daniels, Larry Tranum and Pat Poole.
The first win for
the Warriors came against Pike Liberal Arts School of Troy. The date was Sept.
15, 1971.
Since that first
victory, many others have followed. On this 20th anniversary season,
the Warriors of 1991 are 5-0 coming into the homecoming game against Southern
Academy.

High Yellow Jackets tuned up for this week’s game with Evergreen by blasting
the Fort Deposit Red Devils at Lyeffion Friday night. The 26-6 victory was the
second win for Lyeffion in five starts.
Bo O’Gwynn hammered
over from four yards out early in the first quarter to put the Jackets ahead.
Later in the
opening period, O’Gwynn went nine yards for the second Jacket score. Stanley
Wilson got loose on a beautiful 72-yard run for the third Lyeffion score and
Ronnie Booker bucked over from the one for the final tally.
The Evergreen High

Football Casualties: The
last football season in England has been noted for the casualties recorded.
Among the injuries noted in the Lancet which ended fatally are: Asphyxia caused
by paralysis of the muscles of respiration; acute peritonitis; injury to the
brain; rupture of the intestine; rupture of the right kidney; and abdominal
injuries. Is it not time that this game should be so modified as to relieve it
of the unnecessary dangers now attending it?
