The Andalusia Bulldogs fought back
from a 20-3 halftime deficit to take a 24-20 victory and spoil the Hillcrest
Jaguars home-opener in front of a large rain-soaked crowd last Friday night at Brooks
Stadium in Evergreen.
Hillcrest linemen
Ashley Coleman, Alex Crutchfield, Waymon Tullis, Tim Bush, Will Lanier, DeWayne
McQueen, Cedric Johnson and Bennie Nevlous dominated the line of scrimmage,
giving backs and receivers Don Ray Mixon, Eugene Nevlous, Willie Likely,
Demetrious Rudolph and Ryan Meeks plenty of room to operate.
Senior linebacker
Chris King and defensive lineman Marcus Oliver led Hillcrest’s strong first
half defensive effort.
The Sparta Academy Warriors lost
their second game of the season last Friday night when the South Montgomery
Academy Raiders defeated them 27-6 in Grady.
The Warriors only
score of the night came when Roderick McIntyre returned a Raider kickoff 90
yards for a score.
Michael Pate led
the Warrior running attack with 96 yards on 25 carries. Lyle Bell had 46 yards
on 16 carriers; Rod McIntyre, -9 yards on three carries and Cliff Herbert, -26
yards on four carries.
Charlie King was named the Defensive
Player of the Week, and Eugene “Bam” Nevlous was named the Offensive Player of
the Week for the Hillcrest High School Jaguars. Charlie had seven solo tackles,
six assists, one blocked punt and one fumble recovery. Bam had 38 yards on
eight carries and had eight knockdowns in the Jaguars’ loss last Friday night
to the Andalusia Bulldogs.

Aggies trounce Tigers for first
victory 28-0: In their fourth outing of the season, in Greenville, the
Evergreen Aggies finally put it all together as they walloped the Tigers 28-0.
The strong passing
arms of Harold Rogers and Frank McMillian gave the Aggies their first victory.
The victory cost
the Aggies the services of defensive lineman Donald Perkins who suffered a
broken leg early in the contest.
(Other players on
Evergreen’s team in that game included Anthony Armstrong, Wavie Ausby, Julius
Booker, Alvin Lee, Whalen Oliver, Willie Paige and Walt Lee Ward.)
Ashford axes Warriors 41-24:
Outmanned, badly, but never outfought, the Sparta Warriors dropped their second
decision of the season to Ashford 41-24 here Friday night. A near capacity
crowd again jammed Stuart-McGehee Field.
The Warriors
deserve much, much credit for the battle they put up against these huge
Wiregrass country visitors. Donnie Griggers, Chestley Miniard, Mike Turner,
David Daniels, Sam Skipper, Jerry Sasser, Owens and (Jeff) Nichols all turned
in good plays along with (Larry) Tranum, (Dwight) Watson, Tubby McInvale, Jerry
Cotton, Pat Poole and Joey Nix.
Sparta had to
depend on the pass with Watson’s net for 20 on eight carries leading the negligible
running game.
(Mickey Goneke was
Sparta’s head coach.)

SPONSORS FOR BALL GAMES: For the
first time since Evergreen High revived football, the three Senior high classes
and the football team elected sponsors for the first game of the year, which
added much to the spirit of the game.
The sponsors for
the football team was Kathryn Snowden, who chose as her escort, Bill Johnson,
for the Senior III class, Betty Bettiss, whose escort was Clarence Carrier. The
Senior II class elected Mary Tom Johnson, who was elected by Rex Carpenter, and
the Senior I sponsor was Joyce Barfield, her escort being Nick Stallworth. All
four of the sponsors carried large arm bouquets of chrysanthemums given them by
the “E” club.
Mrs. Annie D. Dean
presented the teacher sponsors with lovely corsages of gladioli, who were Mrs.
E.L. McInnis, Mrs. Charles Parnell and Mrs. Clifford Harper. There was also a
huge and lovely basket of flowers placed behind the sponsors seats.
Aggies Play McKenzie To Scoreless
Tie: The Evergreen Aggies went into its second game of the season as underdogs
against a much heavier team from McKenzie and came out with a 0-0 tie. The
Aggies’ record now stands at one win and one tie.
The fans will have
a chance to see some thrilling football Saturday night when the Greenville
Juniors meet the Evergreen Juniors in the first game of a doubleheader at seven
o’clock. The Greenville “B” team and the Evergreen “B” team will meet in the
second game at eight o’clock.

LENOX NEWS: The “out of school” boys
played our school boys a game of baseball last Friday, the score being 5 to 4
in favor of the school boys.
Our boys are doing
some splendid athletics and are not afraid to tackle anything they’ve seen yet.
Foot Ball Season Opens: The
Agricultural School opened its foot ball season on Friday last when the local
team played the Escambia County High School of Atmore. Although the visitors
succeeded in taking the game our boys fought gamely and far outclassed DeYampert’s
team from Atmore and the game was lost through a run of bad luck. Our team was
able to pierce the visitors’ line at will and fully demonstrated the fact that
they are made of the stuff that goes to make up a foot ball team. Evergreen is
fortunate in having a former University of Alabama foot ball star, Ralph Jones,
as coach for its team and his work is evident in the way our players fought to
the finish. While the first game was well attended, it is hoped that the town
people as a whole will give the team more hearty support.
