“SlimFast Team Tennis League in action in Evergreen now: Tennis anyone? That old phrase has a new meaning in Evergreen since the inception of the SlimFast Team Tennis program, which is headed by James King and Jerry Ezell.
“’It was actually Jerry’s idea,’ said King. ‘He deserves full credit. We simply started it just to have a good time but it has turned out to be a little different than we imagined.’
“Mr. King said when players were sought for the new league, the organizers were looking for experienced players. But along with the experienced players came a few novices, young and old alike.
“With so many children being interested in tennis, Mr. Ezell is now giving tennis lessons each Saturday morning at the tennis courts on Belleview Street. In the first group, nine youngsters are taking lessons.
“’It has been fun to watch,’ said Mr. King. ‘Many of them could not hit the ball over the net on the first day. But after just a few hours, they were hitting it with forehands and backhands.’
“Tennis has always been special to James King. He played for the tennis team at Evergreen High School many years ago.”

“Coach John Law Robinson has been working his Aggie charges hard this week without the help of Assistant Henry Allmon. Coach Allmon has been called on emergency active duty with the Mississippi National Guard. Coach Robinson said that he didn’t expect Coach Allmon back until Monday.
“Robinson said that he was pleased with the play of Leon Adams, Mike Mininger, Bobby Lynch, Bob Ivey and Jimmy Raines in last week’s 12-6 loss to Monroeville. The Aggies showed a potent passing attack in the second half against Monroeville and completed four of nine tosses. Coach Robinson said that they were planning on throwing the ball even more against Neal Friday night.
“The Aggies were rained out of drills Monday, but during the rest of the week, Robinson has been pleased with the improvement of Bobby Hammonds and Paul Deason. Dewayne Grace is not expected to be able to don his pad for Friday nights game with the Yellow Jackets.

“Aggies Show Improvement In Win Over Pine Hill: The Aggies tuned up for their game with Greenville Friday night by rolling to an impressive 32 to 0 victory over Pine Hill.
“Rawls and McIntyre were again the spark plugs in the Aggies’ running attack as they tore through the enemy line for long gains. After Mickey Logue had done his share of passing, Coach Hart sent Billy Mudge Lee in with orders to fill the air with passes. And pass he did; completing a high percentage and having several fall right through the pass receiver’s arms.
“Brooks was really a stick of dynamite in the Aggie line, tearing through and throwing the opposing backs for loss after loss. Hanks and Salter were also in on their share of tackles.
“Coach Hart said that his team ‘showed some improvement, but they have a long way to go before Friday night.’”

“The Conecuh County Training School Eagles opened their 1947 football season Saturday night in a decisive 18-0 win over Atmore.

“Other outstanding players in the backfield were the little ‘Scat back’ man in motion, Willie F. Rabb and Earnest Abrams. The most outstanding players on the line were Faulk, Lyons, Jones and Skipper.”
