My movie picks this week are 'The Thing' and 'Green Lantern'

It’s Wednesday, so today I give you my weekly list of movies that will open in theatres this week as well as a list of movies that will be released this week on DVD.

I hope this will serve as a useful guide as to what’s going on this week if you happen to be near a movie theatre or if you’re looking for something to drop into your NetFlix queue.

Movies that are scheduled to hit theatres this week include:

The Big Year (Comedy, PG): Directed by David Frankel and starring Jack Black, Steve Martin, Owen Wilson, Jim Parsons and Rashida Jones.

Chalet Girl (Comedy, Romance, Not Rated): Directed by Phil Traill and starring Felicity Jones, Ed Westwick, Sophia Bush, Brooke Shields and Billy Nighy.

Father of Invention (Comedy, PG-13): Directed by Trent Cooper and starring Kevin Spacey, Heather Graham, Craig Robinson, Virginia Madsen and Johnny Knoxville.

Fireflies in the Garden (Drama, R): Directed by Dennis Lee and starring Julia Roberts, Ryan Reynolds, Willem Dafoe, Emily Watson and Hayden Panettiere.

Footloose (Drama, Musical, Romance, PG): Directed by Craig Brewer and starring Kenny Wormald, Julianne Hough, Dennis Quaid, Miles Teller and Andie MacDowell.

OKA! (Drama, Not Yet Rated): Directed by Lavinia Currier and starring Will Yun Lee, Haviland Morris, Peter Riegert, Kris Marshall and Isaach De Bankole.

The Skin I Live In (Drama, Thriller, R): Pedro Almodovar and starring Antonio Banderas, Elena Anaya, Marisa Paredes, Blanca Suarez and Jan Cornet.

Texas Killing Fields (Crime and Mystery, Drama, Thriller, R): Directed by Ami Canaan Mann and starring Sam Worthington, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Chloe Grace Moretz, Jessica Chastain and Jason Clarke.

The Thing (Horror, Science Fiction, Thriller, R): Directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. and starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Eric Christian Olsen, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Ulrich Thomsen.

Trespass (Drama, Suspense, Thriller, R): Directed by Joel Schumacher and starring Nicolas Cage, Nicole Kidman, Cam Gigandet, Liana Liberato and Ben Mendelsohn.

New DVD releases for the week of Oct. 11 include:

Arena (Action, Suspense, R): Directed by Jonah Loop and starring Samuel L. Jackson, Nina Dobrey, Kellan Lutz, James Remar and Daniel Dae Kim.

Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead (Documentary, Special Interest, Sports, Not Rated): Directed by Joe Cross and starring Joe Cross.

Green Lantern (Action, Science Fiction, PG-13): Directed by Martin Campbell and starring Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong and Angela Bassett.

Horrible Bosses (Comedy, R): Directed by Seth Gordon and starring Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis, Jennifer Aniston and Kevin Spacey.

The Tree of Life (Drama, PG-13): Directed by Terrence Malick and starring Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, Jessica Chastain, Hunter McCracken and Fiona Shaw.

The Trip (Comedy, Not Yet Rated): Directed by Michael Winterbottom and starring Steve Coogan, Rob Brydon and Claire Keelan.

Zookeeper (Comedy, Family, Romance, PG): Directed by Frank Coraci and starring Kevin James, Rosario Dawson, Leslie Bibb, Adam Sandler and Sylvester Stallone.

If I could only watch one movie at the theatre this week, it would be “The Thing,” and if I had to pick just one DVD to rent this week, it would be “Green Lantern.”
