“The Sparta Academy Lady Warriors finished second in the East Region Tournament played Feb. 9th and 10th at Crenshaw Christian Academy in Luverne. The Lady Warriors will play in the first round of the state playoffs this Thurs., Feb. 16, at 5 p.m. at Faulkner University in Montgomery. Members of the team are Kristy Booker, manager, Sally Hartley, Kelly Grosso, Aundria Griffin, Missy Westwood, Jenny Harper and Kristy Hudson, manager; Nikki Jones, Shelly Bell, Kim Waters, Landra Padgett, Carrie Lambert, Janet Kendrick and Prather Smith.”
“The Sparta Academy Warriors defeated Crenshaw Academy 87 to 80 in a game played Feb. 6, 1995 at Sparta.
“James Johnson was the leading scorer for the Warriors with 35 points. Also scoring in double digits were Adrian Mitchell and Brent Worrell with 13 points each. Rounding out the scoring for the Warriors were Larry Wright with nine points, Brian Gorum with eight points, Nicholas Jones with five points, Jason Miller with three points and Michael Pate with two points.”
“The Sparta Academy Lady Warriors defeated Crenshaw Academy 54 to 47 in a game played Feb. 6 at Sparta Academy.
“Nikki Jones scored 18 points and Aundria Griffin scored 14 points to lead the Lady Warriors. Rounding out the scoring were Janet Kendrick with 11 points; Carrie Lambert, nine points; and Missy Westwood, four points.”

“Lyeffion upset second seed Excel, 70-49, Monday night in the Class 1A, Region 1, Area 2 basketball tournament being played in Excel and advanced to tonight’s semifinals. Repton blasted Southern Normal, 68-38, Tuesday night to move into the semifinals.
“Conecuh High beat Blacksher of Uriah on Monday night by 57-37, but lost a heartbreaking 53-51 decision to first seed W.R. Jones on Tuesday night in overtime. Donald Likely had 29 points for the Blue Devils. Against Excel, the Blue Devils were led by Likely with 19. Billy Jenkins and James Taylor with 10 points each.
“Lyeffion’s upset of Excel was led by Mickey Dailey with 20 points; Michael Grace, 18; and David Lee, 13.
“Elmer Rudolph scored 24 points, Darryl Nettles, 13, and Joe Watkins, 11, to lead Repton past Normal.”
“Evergreen ended the season last Friday night with a 78-51 trouncing of the T.R. Miller Tigers. Horace Smith hit for 30 points, 22 of them coming in the first half as he set out most of the second half. Other scorers for Evergreen were Johnny Allen with 10, David Floyd with 10, Michael Lampley eight points, Kenneth Rankins seven points, James Crosby four points, Russell Bozeman four points, Philander Rogers three points and Autero Scott with two points.
“The Aggies closed out the regular season winning three out of their last five games.
“Semifinal round action continues tonight in the Region 1, Area 2 playoff action at Evergreen High School Gymnasium.

“These are the 1965-66 Conecuh County High School Blue Devils, scourge of South Alabama basketball circles. The Castleberry quint has already won the Conecuh County title and is seeded first in the area tournament, starting at Monroeville’s Coliseum Tuesday night, Feb. 22. Tuesday night Coach Wayne Pope’s fine team racked up Uriah, 72-58, for their 19th win against four losses this season. The Blue Devils end regular season play Friday night playing Repton High at Castleberry. Their first opponent in the area meet will be Beatrice High. The Blue Devils are Gary Oliver, Tommy Jones, Ronald Reeves, Mickey Clark, Donald Janes, Gerald Barlow and Ronnie Jones; Edwin Lanier, manager, Johnny Burt, Lavon Miniard, Joey Pate, Rodney Wilson, Lomax Sims and Coach Pope.”
“Steve Sloan gets the ‘key to the city’ from Evergreen Mayor Henry Sessions during the Alabama quarterback’s appearance here Monday night at Evergreen High School. Sloan came as featured speaker at the Sweetheart Banquet of the Evergreen Baptist Church. With him are Circuit Judge Robert Key who emceed the program, the mayor, Miss Margaret Hagood, former Alabama Junior Miss, Sloan, Miss Patricia Hart, one of Alabama’s Crimson Girls and Steve’s official guide, Moreno White, the Tide’s most fervent alumnus, and Bob Kendall who arranged for the Sloan appearance and introduced the man of the hour.”

“The Evergreen High School Aggie cagers edged Andalusia High Bulldogs, 28-25, in a low-scoring contest in Andalusia Friday night to move within one win of the magic .500 mark. Evergreen has won seven and lost eight this season.
“In the varsity go, the Aggies jumped off to a 12-4 lead in the first quarter with Billy Mudge Lee and Jeff Moorer supplying the points.
“Lee and Gillis Morgan both left the game in the fourth period with five personal fouls. Lee topped the scorers with a 14-point effort. Moorer bagged seven, Gwyn Daniels six and Morgan one for Evergreen.”
“It will be laugh-a-minute basketball in Evergreen High’s Memorial Gym tomorrow (Friday) night when the Evergreen Rotarians play the Evergreen Kiwanians in a benefit tilt.
“The Rotary-Kiwanis match is strictly a grudge battle. Both clubs are out for blood and officials (for free) Waynard Price and Ed Moore have instructions to keep foul play to a minimum. No lethal weapons will be allowed in the gym.
“All local doctors are expected to be available to care for the wounded. Special clinics for sore muscles, bruises and creaking joints are to be set up Saturday morning. Spectators are asked to be ready to form stretcher-bearing parties at any time during the game.
“Both teams list star-studded player rosters that cause each to be confident of victory. Rotary will call on such stars as Tiger Cardwell, Fisherman Lloyd, Point-A-Minute McMillan, Fill-‘Em-Up Hagood, Crip Shot Jones and Bill (The Terrible) Turk to produce points enough to win.
“The fast-breaking Kiwanis team features sharp shooting by Deadeye Miller, Chicken Granade, Never Miss Huey, Choo-Choo Robinson and Speedy Robinson.”

“The Lime Hill girls basketball team won an easy victory from Prof. Hardy’s Nichburg team by a score of 25-6 at their home court Fri., Feb. 14.
“A return game will be played at the Nichburg school Sat., Feb. 22.”
