FEB. 10, 2005

“At the 1997 Conecuh County Volunteer Fire Control Association’s Awards Banquet, Jeppie Dees was awarded the Lois E. Reeves Award. At the time, Dees felt that he was not deserving of this award and in turn gave the award to Sid Lambert. At the 2005 Awards Banquet on Jan. 15, Dees was presented the award again by Clayton Cobb, 2004 President. Cobb stated that Dees was very deserving of the award and the Association wanted him to have it.”

“Judge Robert Edward Lee Key, age 88, of Evergreen passed away Thurs., Feb. 3, 2005 at Westminster Village in Spanish Fort. Judge Key was born Feb. 2, 1917 in Conecuh County. He served as a Lt. Colonel JAG Corps during World War II and served as a judge in the 35th Judicial Circuit Court District for a number of years.”

“Mrs. Frances Mixon was recently presented a Certificate of Recognition from the National Federation of Music for 50 years or more of service in church music. Mrs. Mixon is a member of the Evergreen Orpheus Club and the officers of the club made the presentation to her. Pictured are Judy Robbins, secretary; Jerry Birkhead, vice-president; Jackie Pitts, immediate past president (2003-2004); Mrs. Mixon; Jatricia Pugh, president (2004-2005); and Chestine Finley, treasurer. The Evergreen Orpheus Club has been a member of the National Federation of Music Clubs since 1916.”

FEB. 8, 1990

“Coy Lee Harper, 79, of 102 North Main St., Evergreen, a retired businessman and former mayor of Evergreen, died Wed., Jan. 31. He was a lifelong resident of Conecuh County.”

“Harry Ellis reports two showers, .19 of an inch of rain on Jan. 29 and .43 on Feb. 3, and a trace, .04 on Jan. 30.”

“Hillcrest High School’s Scholars Bowl team was invited to participate in the Troy State University Prep Bowl on Jan. 23. Programs are taped for airing in the summer or early fall on educational TV. Hillcrest’s involvement in this contest and others is made possible by The Union Bank, the school’s Adopt-A-School sponsor. Team members are Burt Black, Bryan Garrett, Tracey Elliott, Glenn Lanier, Clint Hyde and Kenneth Roberts.”

From “The Colyum” by Bob Bozeman – “Had a note along with a renewal from a former Courant employee, J.A. Brooks of Chickasaw. He wrote: ‘Former printer of The Courant 1920-21. Geo. Salter was owner and subscription price was $1 then. Forrest Castleberry was news reporter at that time.’
“It doesn’t take a genius in math to figure that Mr. Brooks was working at The Courant some 70 years ago. He didn’t say, but I assume he must have started work at an early age… even then he is in enjoying advanced years.
“Some Wednesday s I feel like I was here to welcome Mr. Brooks when he came to work in 1920, although that was 27 years before I started.”

FEB. 13, 1975

“This is the Conecuh County Sheriff’s Department as organized under new Sheriff Edwin L. Booker. Seated by the sheriff is Chief Deputy Sheriff Don L. McInnis, who is married and has two children and lives as Fairview. A graduate of Repton High School, McInnis served 18 months in the military service and 18 months with the Monroeville Police Department. He is a qualified Photo Electric Intoximeter operator and graduated from the Alabama Police Academy at Faulkner State Junior College after completing 240 hours of instruction. He is also a TC-500 NCIC computer operator. Standing are Deputy David Stonestreet of Castleberry. A graduate of Evergreen High School, he is married and a member of the National Guard. Adam Jerome Boykin, Bruner Ave., Evergreen, served in the Army two years, including combat service in Vietnam. Leroy Ferrell lives in the Anex community. He has 3-1/2 years experience with the police departments in Georgiana and McKenzie.”

“Earl Windham reports rainfall of 1.7 inches on Feb. 4 and .2 of an inch on Feb. 9.”

“This Cessna 206 photo aircraft is being used by Accu Air Surveys of Seymour, Indiana to photograph this county for re-evaluation purposes. Rick Brown of LaFayette, La. is a charter pilot flying out of Middleton Field Airport for the survey company. Don Pridgen is chief pilot for the company. Jim Fields is manager of Evergreen Aviation, Inc., operators of services at Middleton. Brown got quite a surprise a few days ago when a Navy training plane landed at Middleton and he found that the Marine pilot was Don Wagner, an old school chum of his.”

FEB. 11, 1960

“Deputy Sheriff Mancill Pearce and State Investigator Roy McDowell investigate the scene at Lyeffion High School where yeggmen cracked the safe Monday night. Principal J.O. Yawn discovered the burglary Tuesday morning. He said that approximately $200 in cash and $30 in checks was missing. Investigators are at work on the case.”

“T.O. Langham, Evergreen businessman, qualified last Thursday to make his second campaign for Chairman of the Board of Directors. Four years ago, Langham led in the first primary, but lost in the runoff.
“He is a past president of the Kiwanis Club, member of the Masons and O.E.S., superintendent of the adult department of the Sunday School at the First Baptist Church, and has been active in the United Fund of Conecuh County.”

“This week Boy Scouts are observing the Golden Anniversary of scouting. The local scout troop got the week underway by attending services at the Methodist Church Sunday morning.
“Evergreen Troop 40 has been active over 30 years and all during that time has been under the leadership of Scoutmaster W. Paul McMillan, City School Principal. Hardly a boy has grown up in this town during this period who did not receive some of the benefits of Scouting.”

FEB. 8, 1945

“The Conecuh Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution was organized Thurs., Feb. 1, at the home of Mrs. M.M. Cardwell with 18 members present.
“The organizing and charter members are as follows: Misses Mary Cunningham, Elizabeth Riley, and Mesdames Kate Deming Cardwell, Pansy M. Binion, Martha Binion England, Hermione Newton McGehee, Mary McGehee Stuart, Jessie C. Page, Mary Allen Rhodes Stough, Jeretta Taylor Newton, Nadine Wells Wilson, Edith McCreary Gaston, Laura Haynes Thomasson, Violet Newman King, Frances Deming Jones, Elizabeth M. Stallworth, Dora Haynes Hagood and Emma Riggs Dunn.”

“Alabama Artillery Outfit Fires 100,000th Round: WITH THE SEVENTH ARMY IN FRANCE – The Cannoneer pulled the lanyard and another page was added in the history of the 933rd Field Artillery Battalion, as the last round of a total of 100,000 went out toward the German lines.
“This was the cause of a recent celebration in this American unit, a former Alabama National Guard battalion, which has marked its progress through much of the fighting in Italy and France.
“Personnel of this battalion originally came from the southeast Alabama towns of Evergreen, Elba, Florala, Geneva, Troy and Dothan. Upon mobilization of the unit on 25 November, 1940, it was the 2nd Battalion, 117th Field Artillery Regiment of the 31st Infantry Division.
“A part of the original officer personnel from Alabama are still with the unit. The executive officer, Major Guy B. Wilder, and the Plans and Training Officer, Major Don S. Matthews, are natives of Andalusia, Ala. Others are Capt. Milton P. Carter, Florala, Ala.; Capt. John C. Holman, Evergreen, Ala.; Lt. Henry A. Dorsey, Elba, Ala. and Capt. Jack Parsons, Dothan, Ala.”
