“Michael King, a junior at Hillcrest High School and staff sergeant in the JROTC program, was invited to and spent the week of Feb. 21, 1995 through Feb. 26, 1995 in Washington, D.C. with the National Youth Leadership Forum on Security and Defense.”
“Roger Burbage, president of Landstar Poole, Inc., is opening the doors to welcome everyone to come by Poole this evening from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. for Business After Hours, a program of the Evergreen Chamber of Commerce. Poole has 613 employees at the Evergreen terminal and is a vital part of this community. Evergreen is encouraged to come out and participate in this event.”
“Preston Albritton is shown being congratulated by local American Legion Post Commander Joe Merrills on his excellent performance in the recent public speaking contest sponsored by the American Legion. Looking on is his mother, Mrs. Deborah Albritton. Preston won the county competition and finished a good second at the district level.”
“Spring Quarter commencement exercises for Winter and Fall quarter graduates of Reid State Technical College will be held Friday evening at 6 p.m. in the Wiley Salter Auditorium. Guest speaker for the evening will be Senator Henry ‘Hank’ Sanders.”

“Earl admits that it did rain a whole lot: The Courant’s dauntless weatherman, Earl Windham, could not pass up an opportunity to hand out ‘a few words’ to the country editor. However, ‘Ole Earl’ is apparently getting ‘mellow’ in his elder years.
“The Weatherman Windham (incidentally, the editor has been asked to replace him with Dennis Majors) said: ‘Well, we have had the rain this past week, but I did not have the rain (on his official measuring device) reported in other parts of the county. I know that you are going to say that my rain gauge has a hole in it… if you can behave yourself which I know is impossible.
“They country editor can only say, ‘Thanks, Ole Earl, for all your good words.
“Windham reports .09 of an inch of rain on March 10; .07 on March 11 and 2.29 inches on March 12.”
From Castleberry news by Edith Green and Myrtis Hillman – “The Town Council met Friday night, March 14, in the Town Office. A group of citizens interested in the organization of a volunteer fire department were also present. Mayor Barlow officially appointed Allen McGraw to serve as Fire Chief. A meeting will be held Tuesday night, March 18, for the purpose of further organizing the department.”
“Grover Cleveland Reynolds, 95, of Montgomery and formerly of Evergreen, died Thurs., March 13, in a Montgomery hospital after a brief illness. He was a retired Church of Christ minister and was instrumental in founding the Evergreen Church of Christ and served as its ministers for many years.”

“The 1965 Miss Evergreen will be crowned next Friday night, March 26, at the Evergreen City School. There are 44 lovely young ladies from Evergreen High School who are competing for the title this year.”
“Fred Oswald of Warren Ford Sales, Evergreen, will be honored for an outstanding sales performance during 1964 at a banquet at the Dinkler-Tutwiler Hotel in Birmingham on Sat., March 20.”
“Henry H. Beasley, age 78, died Monday, March 15, in a local hospital after a long illness. Mr. Beasley was a popular resident of this city, widely known for his great sense of humor. He served as member of the Evergreen City Council at one time.”
“Beginning Sun., March 21, all regular scheduled services of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints will be held at the new church on the corner of Martin and Rural Streets. The consecration service will be in April, the date has not been set, but will be announced later.”
“Dr. Watkins Batt Castleberry, 68, native of Conecuh County and a resident of Birmingham for many years died March 11, 1965. He was a graduate of Auburn’s School of Veterinary Medicine and gave more than 40 years of devoted service to the profession. He was a member of the Exchange Club and a Mason.”

“At a meeting of the directors of the Bank of Evergreen held Tuesday afternoon, O.C. McGehee was elected president of the institution to fill the place made vacant by the death of W.K. Horton, who had been president since the bank was founded in September 1932.
“The board of directors also elected W.K. Horton Jr., a director. Roy Thomas was made cashier, and I.R. Mills, assistant cashier.”
From “This Week’s Wash” by Bob Bozeman – “Someone, would sure like to know who, stopped by the office a couple of weeks ago and left a copy of The Evergreen Courant published Wednesday, April 30, 1902, or nearly 48 years ago. I have enjoyed reading over this old paper and wish that the person that left it would let me know so that I could thank him.
“The Courant and Evergreen have both changed a lot during the years, for the better it is hoped. This issue of the paper had a large ad taking up over a quarter of the front page, plus several other ads and readers.
“The editor of that paper seemed to be a little critical of things at times, also. He had this to say about the city streets:
‘”Our worthy marshal should see that our main streets are kept cleaner than they are by having the paper and other rubbish swept from the stores either burned or hauled away. Summer is here and the streets should be kept in a neater condition.’”

“Oldest N.Y. Mason – WATERTOWN… Omar A. Hine celebrates his 96th birthday this month and on April 11, the 75th Masonic Anniversary. He is the dean of New York State Master Masons and still works a regular eight-hour day in business.”
“Rare Coins Are Found In Cornfield – Andalusia, Ala., March 19 – One hundred and thirteen pieces of old coins, including one $5 gold piece, was unearthed in an old field near River Falls recently by Lester and Bob Atkinson of this city. Some of the coins date back as far as 1600.”
“Did you know that illness has been unusually prevalent in Conecuh County during recent weeks is shown by the school attendance records returned to the office of the County Superintendent. Measles, influenza, whooping cough, and chicken pox have been epidemic in many communities. In Flat Rock school alone there were 700 absences due to measles during the month ending March 8.
“The percentage of attendance this month for the entire county reached a new low mark of 77 percent – lowest for the entire year.
“Conecuh High, Castleberry; Range and Spence won the highest percentages of schools. Range is taught by Mrs. Marjorie Dees and Miss Janie King and Mrs. Sara Page Hamilton is the teacher at Spence.”
“The week beginning April 1 has been designated by Mayor C.A. Jones as annual ‘Clean Up Week’ and all citizens and businesses concerns are requested to cooperate by giving their premises, places of business, vacant lots, etc., a thorough cleaning and renovating.”
