“Gets Jap Machine Gun Nest At Night: With the 24th Infantry (Victory) Division on Mindanao – Firing by ear, the men of the mortar squad of Private First Class Mack C. Williams (husband of Mrs. Bernadine M. Williams of Rt. C, Evergreen, Ala.) gave a new twist to an old adage – Japs should be heard, if not seen – and destroyed two Japanese machine gun nests in a pitch-dark night near Davao.
“Williams’ 60-millimeter mortar was firing all afternoon at two enemy machine gun positions. After each barrage, the Nip guns ceased firing. Minutes later, they would open up again from a different location.
“The company dug in for the night. The mortars were set up to fire at likely avenues of attack. Near midnight the sharp staccato of the Jap guns pierced the darkness. The insistent Nip gunners were back again.
“Williams couldn’t see them, but his trained ear picked up their approximate location. Quickly, he swung the mortar round, readjusted the aim and fired. A 50-round barrage saturated the area. Nothing more was heard from the troublesome Japs.
“Williams is fighting with this Victory Division’s Corregidor-famed 34th Infantry Regiment.”
