“Roof Completed At Stadium,
Ladies Day Set For June 13: A galvanized tin roof covering the cement stands at
Brooks Stadium was completed this week. Spectators can now see games without
enduring the blazing heat of the sun.
“Sun., June 13, has been set
as the date for Ladies Day at the local park. The Greenies will play Jay, Fla.,
one of the strongest teams in the league. Extra attractions schedule include a
fashion show and possibly the appearance of a soap box daredevil unit direct
from its last performance at the Thrill Hill Speedway in Evergreen.”
“Greenies Wallop Flomaton, 16
to 0, Play Here Today: The league leading Evergreen Greenies pasted a 16 to 0
defeat on the cellar dwelling Flomaton baseballers Sunday to tighten their hold
on first place.
“Shutout pitching by Wendell
Hart and lefty Gaston and four booming base hits by Otis Johnson paced the
Greenies to their fourth win of the season against only one loss. Hart gave up
only three hits in six scoreless inning and Gaston held the Flomaton squad
hitless in the final two innings.
“The game was called at the
end of the eighth inning because of the Sunday curfew law. The Greenies
collected 13 hits and gave near perfect support afield, committing only one
error.
“The Greenies meet Flomaton
here this afternoon at three o’clock in Brooks Stadium. Last Thursday’s game
with Atmore was called because of rain.”
“Legion Juniors Trounce
Flomaton In 1st Start: The American Legion Junior baseball team started off
with a bang by trouncing Flomaton, 21 to 0. Bertie Hassell was in good form and
gave up only one hit.
“In the third frame, Hassell
was a bit wild and put two on base but came out of it with brilliant clutch
pitching.
“Little Pete Wells was a
sensational at third base playing perfect at field and getting four hits for as
many times at bat.
“Dickey Bozeman, Pete White,
Sam Snowden, Benton Carpenter and several others who played their first
baseball looked and played like veterans. With practice and seasoning this
young team will make a good account of itself.
“This is part of the
Citizenship program put on by the American Legion. This is about the best
project that could be sponsored for the young boys of this community.”
“Boys 15 And Under Have
Morning Baseball League: The junior baseball league for boys 15 and under is
proving to be a highly competitive affair. Each of the three teams of this
league plays two games a week at 8 a.m.”

“The Evergreen Colored
Baseball club journeyed to Andalusia Monday and took a decision from the
Covington County colored team there, by a score of 31 to 1. The game was
featured by the hitting of ‘Likker’ Lloyd, Henry Rudolph and Willie Lloyd, the
latter poling out the longest drive seen in the Andalusia park, while Randolph
and L. Lloyd hit safely five times each.”
“Evergreen Defeats
Greenville-Luverne: Defeating Greenville by a score of 9 to 3 last Thursday,
with Skin Hyde on the mound, Evergreen’s green clad baseball warriors came back
Sunday to take a grueling 14 to 11 decision from Luverne on the local lot. Doc
Jones, crossfire artist hurled the Sunday contest, and with jam-up support
would have won the game in much easier fashion.
“Hyde had Greenville well in
hand throughout the Thursday game, striking out ten of the enemy. The team as a
whole hit well in the Thursday game, banging out hits when they meant runs.
“Doc Jones pitched creditably
in the Sunday embroglio, holding the slugging Luverne outfit well in hand in
all except the third inning, when a succession of errors, ‘handle hits’ and
general hard luck, allowed the visitors to pile up eight runs, giving them a
lead of 9 to 3 at that stage of the game.”
“Evergreen continued to lead
the Central Alabama League through games of last Sunday, having won five and
lost two games, with Ft. Deposit in second place, Luverne third and Greenville
fourth.”
