“John Coburn says and proves
that you don’t have to have a big hook to catch a big fish. John caught this
eight-pound bass in a local pond on a number six bream hook with a cricket.”
“Coach Wayne Pope, who is
attending summer school at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, spent the
weekend here with his family.”

From “This Week’s Wash” by
Bob Bozeman – “Jeff Moorer and Douglas Potts, Evergreen representatives on the
Crimson Tide football squad were home last week. Doug has returned to the
University for summer school, but Jeff is staying home for the summer.
“Jeff played a lot of guard
for the Tide last fall and is counted on heavily this year. Douglas was a standout
at tackle in spring training and the Tide coaches expect much from him this
fall. Jeff begins his senior year this fall while Doug will be a sophomore. Sam
Cope, captain of the Aggie squad last year, entered the University this week.
Sam has a scholarship and will join the freshman squad this fall, so Evergreen
will have three players at the University on scholarships this year, which aint
bad for a little old country town.”
“Recreation Center Draws Big
Crowds Following Opening: The new City Recreation Center at the armory on South
Main Street has been drawing big crowds since its opening last Friday. So far,
the crowds have been limited to the younger set with a scant sprinkling of
adults, but future programs are expected to bring out the ‘grown-ups.’
“Wednesday afternoon, the
forms had been set and all materials on machinery readied for the pouring of
the concrete tennis court and play area in front of the building. This is to be
completed this week and will be put in use in the very near future. It is to be
lighted for play at night.
“This week members of the
City Recreation Board are keeping the center open while Director Bill Parsons
takes a leave of absence to get married Sunday in Americus, Ga. His bride-to-be
is Dora Ann Johns of Evergreen. The directors will keep the center open at
night while Tommy Melton is in charge at the afternoon sessions.
“Before leaving Wednesday for
Americus, Coach Parsons asked that anyone who had any card tables, card games,
chairs of any type, games such as dominoes, checkers, darts, any cabinets or
curtains that they would like to give to the center, please phone 468 and
arrangements will be made to pick them up.
“Coach Parsons also said that
he needed players for the junior baseball program. So far, the turnout has been
poor. Play is to get underway in earnest as soon as Vacation Bible School ends
next week. Two age groups will participate, 8 to 12 and 13 to 15.
“At present, the recreation
center is offering table tennis, pool, shuffle board, dancing and several other
games.
“Friday night, the Kiwanis
Club will hold a Bingo Party from 7:30 to 9:30, charging 50 cents admission
with proceeds to go to their Child Welfare Fund.”

“Greenies Drop Decisions To
Milton and Flomaton: The Milton ball club defeated the Greenies in Milton
Thursday afternoon by the narrow margin of 3-2. Stewart was on the mound for
Milton while Watson took care of the Evergreen mound chores.
“The fast stepping Flomaton
nine touched Watson, Greenie hurler, for seven safeties Sunday and took a 6-2
victory from the Evergreen lads, while their pitcher, dished out but five hits.
Flomaton started the game off with a bang when Turberville, centerfielder and
first man up, waded into Watson’s offering and slammed the horse hide over the
Greenies centerfielder for a circuit clout. Hanna scored for the Greenies in
the fourth and tied up the ball game but Flomaton came back in the sixth and
scored five runs off of two hits, a walk, a bean ball and two errors. Murphy
brought in the only other score of the game in the seventh frame. Turberville
took hitting honors in the game by slamming out one homer and a triple.
However, the game was played under protest by Evergreen.”
