Judge Oks exhumation: The body of a man buried 16 years ago was removed from its grave at Midway yesterday (Wednesday) as an investigation continues regarding his death.
An autopsy is scheduled for today (Thursday) on the body of Herman Lemuel Stacey, whose death was ruled accidental in October 1980.
The 81-year-old Midway farmer’s body was found near state highways 47 and 106, inside Monroe County. New evidence may have been uncovered that will show Stacey was murdered.

Tourney winners told: Thirteen teams consisting of six players each competed in the annual Alabama River Pulp-Alabama River Woodlands Golf Tournament that was held Aug. 17 at the Vanity Fair Golf and Tennis Club in Monroeville.
First place was taken by the team of Brad Trotter, Floyd Grice, Joey Holley, Lee Pettis, Chuck Jordan and Glenda Trotter.
Second place went to the team of Charlie Ferguson, Leroy Ackerman, Alan Jaye, Patrick Brown, Rusty Till and Jimmy Anderson.

Guard serving Panama tours: Members of Monroeville’s 778th Maintenance Co. of the U.S. Army National Guard are involved in a humanitarian mission to Panama.
According to Readiness Noncommissioned Officer Sgt. Jim Rowell, two rotations of Guardsmen have already been to Panama since Aug. 2.
The third group of 28 Guardsmen left for a 16-day tour as the second group arrived back in Monroeville Saturday night after its 16-day tour.

That’s some window frame! If the window panels going up on the new Monroe County Bank look heavy, it’s because they are – 20,000 pounds apiece. The pre-stressed concrete panels were hauled in from Atlanta, where they were produced. Hoisting and positioning them requires two cranes. The bank, which is being constructed by Lazenby Electric Co., is fast taking shape as the panels are stationed around the steel beam skeleton.

MCHS issues lineup for Flomaton game: Monroe County High School Coach Ronnie Dees has released the following starting lineup for the Tigers’ first game against Flomaton tonight (Thursday) at 8 p.m.
On the offensive team will be ends Lincoln Hollinger and Willie White, tackles Calvin Richardson and Mark Williams, guards Joe Neil Hyde and Lonzie McCants, center David Larrimore, quarterback Larry Snowden, fullback Calvin Williams, tailback Jerry Lee McClain, wingback Mike Cobb or J.W. Powell.
Playing on the defensive team will be ends Earl Lang, Lincoln Hollinger or Willie White, tackles Lonzie McCants and Willie Gardner or Mark Williams, guards Calvin Richardson, Farrar Nettles or Joe Hyde, linebackers Calvin Williams and David Larrimore, halfbacks Joe McPherson and J.W. Rowell, safety Mike Cobb or Jerry Lee McClain.

Mrs. Eloise House was sworn in as officer-in-charge of the Uriah Post Office by Postal Inspector J.B. Stuart after Mrs. Willie Mae Green retired on her birthday, Friday, Aug. 13, after 22 years of service as postmaster in Uriah.

SEPT. 5, 1946

Work Started On Grove Hill Road: Work has been started on the road from Claiborne to Grove Hill and is going right along. The McKee Construction Co. of Jackson, has this contract and has recently moved on the location. Bridges are being put in and the right-of-way, where it leaves the old road, is being put into shape.
With this road work under way and the road work on the Evergreen road also going forward, the time is getting close when Monroeville will be connected in all directions with a fine network of hard surfaced roads.

MONROEVILLE TO BEGIN FOOTBALL PRACTICE: Monroe County High School will begin football practice Thurs., Sept. 10. All boys going out for football have been notified to be at the High School at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, when uniforms will be issued.

Miss Nelle Harper Lee and Edwin C. Lee spent Thursday and Friday of last week with Mr. and Mrs. Herschel Conner Jr. in Eufaula. They were accompanied home by Master Herschel Conner III, who will spend a week with his grandparents.

Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Lee, Misses Alice and Nelle Harper Lee and Master Hank Conner are spending the week at Gulf Breeze, Fla. They have as their guest for the week Miss May McClevey of Webster Groves, Missouri.

Miss Faye Kirkland of Florence has arrived in Monroeville and has assumed the duties of Supervisor of Elementary Education in Monroe County.

Dr. and Mrs. W.H. Hines are spending a few days this week in Birmingham.

SEPT. 1, 1921

Funeral of Louis Hayles: On Tuesday morning, the 23rd of August, the funeral of Private Louis Hayles, who made the supreme sacrifice “over there,” took place at Eliska, Ala. The Methodist Church was tastefully decorated with the national colors, ferns and flowers, but it could not accommodate the immense throng of sorrowing relatives, friends and acquaintances, so the service took place in the shady grove surrounding the church. Military honors were paid by his comrades and a salute was fired over the grave.
Rev. Theo. Harris of Birmingham, a lifelong friend of the family, conducted the services and paid a glowing tribute to the bravery of Mr. Hayles in giving his life for his county and also of his life as a Christian, testified to by all who knew him and also by his comrades who were associated with him in camp and in the struggle in France.

The Beatrice Consolidated School will open on Mon., Sept. 12, at nine o’clock. This school will be a fully affiliated high school. Board can be had at reasonable rates. Communicate with I.F. Simmons, Principal.

Miss Lillie Mae Faulk left Monday for Brewton where she will continue her studies in the Downing Industrial School.

Mr. W.L. Bright of Pensacola, vice president of the W.A. Ray Hardware Co., spent a day or two in Monroeville last week. Mr. Bright expressed himself as highly gratified at the prosperous opening of the Monroeville branch of the company’s store.

Prof. Jas. A. York attended a three-day conference of high school principals in Montgomery last week.

SEPT. 1, 1896

Prof. W.S. Neal of Brewton was in town last week circulating among his many friends.

Capt. Geo. H. Gray of Perdue Hill, Monroe’s newly elected tax assessor, was in the city on Saturday. Capt. Gray will begin his round of sittings on the first Monday in October, proximo.

The Mexia and Natchez baseball teams crossed bats in Monroeville on Saturday. When the game was called, the score stood Natchez 39, Mexia 9.

As the faithful chronicler of events it becomes our sad duty to record the death of Mr. Charles E. Curry, which occurred on Thursday evening, the 27th ult., after a protracted and painful illness, aged about 46 years. For a score or more years, “Charley” Curry, as he was familiarly known, had resided with his uncle, Capt. John DeLoach, and proved a most faithful and trustworthy superintendent of his home affairs.

Prof. L.K. Benson, who last year had charge of a large and prosperous school at Tinela, Monroe County, Ala., has accepted a school at Dixie, Ga., and will leave Forest Home for that place about Sept. 1. Prof. Benson spent part of last week in Camden with his brother, Dr. J.C. Benson. – Camden New Era.

The annual session of the Monroeville Academy opened this morning with 45 matriculations.

Manistee: Mr. Lufkin, the former sawyer at the Bear Creek Mill, left a few days since for the Cahaba River, where he has purchased an interest in a mill.
