Hillcrest adds new coaches: Hillcrest High School’s coaching staff has had growing pains over the summer with six new assistant coaches joining the Jaguars’ staff. The coaches are head coach Maurice Belser, James Thompson, Terry Gandy, Matt Blake, Clinton Smith, Jasen Craik, Jerrell Burns and Brandon Armstrong.
Sparta Academy
opened its first fall football practice under the direction of new head coach
Mike Sims Monday morning.
Sims was promoted
from defensive coordinator to head coach in the middle of last season and led
the Warriors through spring drills in May.
Twenty-six of the
Warriors’ 27 players in grades 8-12 attended the first practice of the 2007
season.
Sims said that the
team’s depth in the offensive and defensive lines has improved.
Linemen returning
include the Cinereski brothers, Chris and Kyle. Both are seniors and Chris is
the biggest at 6-5, 280. Kyle checks in at 6-feet, 260.
Expectations of
improving on last year’s 0-10 season are running high but Hillcrest High
School’s Jaguars are still a young team with just seven seniors on this year’s
team.
Head coach Maurice
Belser, who is starting his second season, said having been able to oversee the
Jaguars’ program for a full year and through the summer workouts has been an
advantage he did not have going into the 2006 season.
