U.S. Air Force Major
Samuel W. Hanks, son of Mrs. Opal L. Hanks of 2054 S. Bucker Road, Mobile and
formerly of Conecuh County, has been decorated with the Bronze Star Medal at
Bien Hoa AB, Vietnam, for meritorious service while engaged in military operations
against Viet Cong.
Major Hanks is a
graduate of Evergreen High School. Major Hanks was an outstanding athlete at
Evergreen High School and earned all-state honors in 1948, the first from the
school to be honored. He also served as captain of the team his senior year,
playing tackle. He went on to Auburn where he played three years and was a
starting defensive tackle.
Hart sounds call for
Aggie troops to report Monday: A call to battle was issued to would-be Aggies
by Head Coach Wendell Hart today. Evergreen High’s most successful-ever coacher
is back at home after six years absence. He asks all candidates for the Aggie
football team to report to Memorial Gymnasium at six o’clock Monday afternoon
for the opening of pre-season drills.
There is one group excepted
from this call. Coach Harts asks that seventh graders wait until school starts.
The Aggies will
spend next week working out in shorts in conditioning drills. They will be
issued pads and equipment on Fri., Aug. 18, with ‘knocking’ scheduled to begin
the following Monday.
The work will be
serious and at a fast pace from the start with a season-opening battle in
Atmore on Friday night, Sept. 8, coming up fast.
Coach Hart said that
he has been well pleased with the enthusiasm already shown by the boys, a
number of whom have been working out on their own, running, throwing, etc. to
get in shape before practice begins. He hopes this enthusiasm will continue
when the group begins work Monday.
Assistant Coach
Billy Madison will not be on hand until Aug. 17. He is completing work on his
BS degree at Livingston State College.
Coach Hart said that
right now every position on the team is wide open. ‘We are going to play the
boys who show us that they want to play badly enough to pay the price,’ he
said. ‘Natural ability is fine, but I’ve always had fondness for the boy who
was willing to work and go all-out all the time. If he happens to have natural
ability too, then that is just that much better.’
1967 SCHEDULE: Sept.
8, at Atmore; Sept. 15, v. Monroeville; Sept. 22, v. Flomaton; Sept. 29, v.
W.S. Neal; Oct. 6, at Greenville; Oct. 13, at Thomaston; Oct. 20, at Frisco
City; Oct. 27, at Red Level; Nov. 3, v. T.R. Miller; Nov. 10, v. Georgiana.
Local golfers set
club tournament: The Evergreen Golf Club’s annual club tournament will begin
Sunday afternoon at one o’clock, according to tournament chairman Brown Boykin.
Qualifying rounds will be played at that time. Entries should be turned in to
Boykin by Saturday which is the deadline.
The tournament is
limited to local club members and will be played in two successive Sundays with
the final rounds scheduled for Sun., Aug. 20.
Mike Moorer is the
defending champion, but the hottest golfer on the local scene at the moment is
Bill Ivey, former club champ and star Howard (Samford U.) College golfer. Ivey
set a new course record with a five-under par 31 in June, then repeated the
feat a few weeks later. He has fired a number of 32’s in recent weeks.
Long-hitting Hugh
Ellington and the veteran Bill McGehee are also expected to make strong bids.
