Monroe Deputy Sheriff Charlie Sizemore said Simpson was drowned while swimming with a group of boys around four miles above the Flat Creek Bridge on the Franklin road. His body was recovered approximately four hours following the accident.

July Fourth Passes Off Without Mishap: Monroeville demonstrated Saturday that a “safe and sane” fourth might be observed. No accidents of any sort marred the celebration here staged by the Junior Chamber of Commerce and the American Legion.
During the afternoon, a heavy rain fell, making it impossible to finish the first ball game that was to have been played between Monroeville-Vredenburgh and Atmore-Stockton teams. Mrs. B.H. Stallworth Sr. held the lucky ticket that won the Ford roadster given by the Junior Chamber of Commerce.
Most of the business houses remained open during the day.

Mrs. A.C. Lee, Edwin and Nelle Harper Lee spent several days in Montgomery this week.

NEW METHODIST CHURCH ABOUT READY FOR USE: According to Mr. Kimbrough, the contractor, the new Methodist Church will be ready for use about the first Sunday in August. The steam heating plant was installed last week. With the exception of the flooring and staircases, all work has been finished in the building. BUENA VISTA: Our hearts go out in Christian sympathy to Mr. N.F. Moore, his sweet wife, and to the sorrowing brothers and sisters, on learning of the death of their son, Mr. Allen Moore. PETERMAN: Mr. J.S. Buford, a leading merchant of this place, is building a new store house much larger than his old one, where he expects in a few weeks to be comfortably situated for serving the public.

Coker’s Sentence Commuted: Gov. Jelks, acting under the recommendations of the State Pardon Board, has commuted the death sentence of Sonnie Coker of Monroe County to imprisonment for 99 years. Had clemency been denied, Coker would have been hanged tomorrow. Coker was tried and convicted in the circuit court last July for criminal assault on a girl.

PINEVILLE: Two specimens of the reptilian kingdom, in other words two hideous snakes, were killed at our front door a few days ago. Little Jim Allen Sanders was sitting in the piazza and saw it winding its sinuous length up a tree in front of the door. He secured a hoe, brought it down and killed it. The next day the children were playing under the house and came upon another just like the first. Jim Allen killed that one too.
