Cemetery Cleaning At Mt. Andrew: Announcement was made this week that people will gather at Mt. Andrew Cemetery in the Pine Hill area for a cemetery cleaning on Fri., July 11. Everyone is invited, said Mrs. W.F. Shamburger, Yellow Bluff, of the committee, and should come at an early hour.
“The cemetery is in bad condition, and we need more help,” said Mrs. Shamburger. Necessary work will include cleaning off bushes and remounding of graves.

On June 11th, Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Speir Jr. of Furman became the parents of a baby girl, whom they have named Jennifer Mel.

Pat Harvey, a recent graduate of Pine Hill High School, left Saturday for Montgomery to enter Massey-Draughon Business College. He was accompanied by his mother, Mrs. Swannee Harvey, and Mrs. Alfred Morgan, who returned home Saturday night.

Services Held For W.C. Hestle: Funeral services for William Clarence Hestle, 82, well known retired farmer and merchant of Orrville, were held at Breslin Service Chapel at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Interment followed in New Live Oak Cemetery. Hestle, who had been in ill health for several years, died in a Selma hospital Friday at 10:18 p.m.
He was born in the Hestle community, Wilcox County, on Feb. 1, 1876. His grandfather was a pioneer settler of Wilcox County, coming from South Carolina at the age of 18.

Swimming Pool Is Now Open: The Camden Swimming Pool was opened to the public Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock, and it was quickly seen that swimming will prove to be a popular form of recreation. There were 56 swimmers Sunday and 119 Monday. One end of the pool has been roped off for the youngsters and their mothers (one father event went in Sunday afternoon dressed in his Sunday finery, shoes and all).

NATIONAL GUARD UNIT IN CAMDEN MAKING PROGRESS: Three new members joined unit this week, according to Capt. E.H. Kelley, commanding officer. They are as follows: Charles E. Tait, Camden; Horace F. Martin, Camden; and L.J. McBride, Pine Apple. These three men have a total of 14 years army experience and will be valuable assets to the company. All were given their previous army rating.

AWIN: Miss Corrie Beard, a retired school teacher, 72, passed away at Stabler Infirmary, June 25, after being cared for there 24 days. The Hall home had been hers for 15 months. She was buried on the 26th at the Beard Cemetery, near Pine Apple, with brief services by ministers of the Pine Apple Methodist Church and Awin Church of Christ.

Miss Norma Loftin is spending some of her summer vacation in Castleberry and Evergreen. She will attend the old fashioned square dance sponsored by the Conecuh Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, Wednesday night, July 2, and will stay over for the Fourth of July year celebration of ball games, barbecue and dancing.

JULY 7, 1938

Gleek Boy (Clem) Andrews stops a losing streak today by hurling a one-run shutout for the Camden Wild Cats. It was a 15 to 1 victory over Millers Ferry. T.H. Hudson drove out a two-bagger to bring in two runs. The only score by Millers Ferry was made by their ace pitcher, Billy Arrington. The Camden Wild Cats are not only celebrating a victory but news reached them that their heavy hitting second baseman, Earl Sheppard, was coming home.

LEGION GROUP TO CELEBRATE ANNIVERSARY: Post 6, American Legion, in appreciation of the Auxiliary, through their Commander Edwin H. Granger, has invited the women to participate in their 19th anniversary celebration and reception for charter members at 3 p.m. today in the War Memorial Building, Balboa Park. The unveiling ceremony of a painting of Col. E.N. Jones, 1st Commander, painted and presented by Capt. T.J. Mollinari, will be featured. Col. Jones’ granddaughter, Florence Myrick Jones, will officiate at the unveiling. – San Diego, (Calif.) Ex.

Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Stallings of Los Angeles, Calif. arrived by plane Thursday to visit her mother, Mrs. W.A. Dale and sister, Miss Sarah Dale. Mrs. Marie Stallings of Birmingham accompanied them.

JULY 5, 1928

A number of the high school girls are attending a camp at Rosebud this week., Mrs. Miller Bonner being chaperone.

Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Boykin Jr. are receiving congratulations upon the arrival of a fine baby boy, whom they have named John Stanford.

Miss Kathleen Watson, a recent graduate of Beatrice High School, was the guest of her aunt, Mrs. L.P. Stuart, the past week. She will later enter Judson College.

Misses Frances and Eleanor Stuckey have returned home from New York, Canada, Niagara Falls and other points of interest. They were accompanied by Miss Thelma Ward, a former teacher of Wilcox County High School.

DEATH OF MRS. J.W. DEAN: Mrs. J.W. Dean passed away at her home in Caledonia Saturday evening, 2:30, June 30. Her remains were laid to rest in Bear Creek cemetery Sunday evening at 2:30. She has been an invalid for 20 years. To know her, was to love her. Great was her suffering, yet she had a smile for everyone. She was born at Richmond, Ala. June 29, 1865.

Messrs. M.M. Moss, S.C. Godbold, John Miller, Miller Bonner and Robt. Lambert attended Charter night of the Greenville Lions Club in Greenville last week.

Mr. and Mrs. Will Lawler were Selma visitors this week. While there, Mrs. Lawler underwent a tonsil operation. Her many friends will be glad to know that she is doing nicely.

JULY 4, 1918

Mr. W.W. Primm, for about 10 years connected with the Matthews Hardware Co., has resigned his position to accept a place with Cathron & Co. of Selma as salesman. Mr. Primm’s promotion is a deserved one as he has in the past steadily devoted himself to his work, and by sheer energy and stickability has proven his mettle. He will prove a valuable asset to Cathron & Co.

Prof. M.B. Martin of Neenah was a Camden visitor Saturday.

General rains over Wilcox the past week has increased the crop prospects considerably.

Mr. and Mrs. D.E. Dunn of Mt. Hope have received a letter from their son, W.E. Dunn, who is now somewhere in France, stating that he has been confined to a hospital with fever. His letter dated June 2 states that he has about recovered.

Mr. Dick Dees left Wednesday to join the navy. He has made his home in Camden for several years and has many friends here who wish him success and safe return.

Mr. C.J. Curtis of Sunny South transacted business in Camden Monday.

Dr. Bonner and children were Selma visitors Monday.

Mrs. Julia Bonner of Oak Hill is visiting Camden relatives this week.

Dr. Joe Hall Jones of Oak Hill was a Camden visitor this week.
