Weather observer Harry Ellis
reported .45 inches of rain on March 11. He reported a
high of 83 degrees on March 10 and a low of 32 on March 12.

CSA Navy 36 Caliber Blackpowder pistol that the Pickney Bowles Camp No. 1840 of
the Sons of Confederate Veterans will be giving away. All proceeds from the
donations will be used by the camp for local historical projects. Donations will
be accepted for a short time, so if you are interested, please contact any of

Frank Graddy, 73, of Evergreen died Wed., March 8,
2000 at his residence. Mr. Graddy was a WWII veteran, a member of Dean Masonic
Lodge No. 112 and a retiree from the State of Alabama Tag Division. Graveside
services were held Sat., March 11, 2000 at 1 p.m. from the Brooklyn Cemetery
with Masonic services, Dean Lodge No. 112 Worshipful Master Raymond Lassiter,
Rev. Bob Godbee officiating and Foreman Funeral Home of Andalusia directing.

Castleberry sets meet to organize
fire department: There will be an organizational meeting to establish a
Volunteer Fire Department for Castleberry and surrounding vicinity. The meeting
will take place Mon., March 24, at eight o’clock at the Conecuh County High
School library.
Representatives
from the Alabama Forestry Service will be present. All interested citizens are
urged to attend.
Final rites held
for Mr. Newman: Jack Howard Newman, 61, of Evergreen died Monday in a Pensacola
hospital after a long illness. Mr. Newman was a widely known lumberman in South
Alabama and North Florida who retired several years ago. He lived most of his
life in Evergreen.
Mr. Newman
operated a lumber business here for a number of years. In the early 1950s, he
founded Bay Lumber Co. in Niceville, Fla., a large and successful lumber
business, which he operated until his retirement. He was well known and highly
respected in the lumber business and enjoyed the esteem of his fellow
businessmen.
Armed robber
hits local Holiday Inn early Monday AM: An armed robbery of the Evergreen
Holiday Inn early Monday morning netted the culprit $182.60, according to
authorities.
According to a
report submitted to Chief of Police Jimmy Hawsey, the robbery took place
between 3:20 and 3:25 a.m. Chief Hawsey said the robbery continues under
investigation.

O.C. McGehee Elevated To Bank
Presidency: At a meeting of the directors of the Bank of Evergreen held Tuesday
afternoon, O.C. McGehee was elected president of the institution to fill the
place made vacant by the death of W.K. Horton, who had been president since the
bank was founded in September 1932.
The board of directors also
elected W.K. Horton Jr. a director, Roy Thomas was made cashier and I.R. Mills,
assistant cashier.
O.E.S. WILL MEET – Conecuh
Chapter No. 217 O.E.S. will hold its second meeting of the month Monday night,
March 20, at seven o’clock. There will be an initiation at this meeting.
Lone Star Station Is Being
Remodeled: The Lone Star Service Station, Forrest O. Douglas and Sam Robinson
owners, is being remodeled and enlarged. The work started this week.
The station plans to move its
wash and grease rack to the rear, enlarge the station space and add a display
room where the grease rack is now. Plans also include a new office, which will
be used jointly by the station and J.H. Robinson, local Pure Oil distributor.
The additions are new and
modern in design and the entire station will have an improved appearance. The
display room will give adequate space to display automobile accessories and
additional storage space is included. The work will be completed in two or
three months.
The City Council has approved
expenditures of $10,000 to enlarge and improve water mains in the city it is
announced by Mayor J.H. Robinson. The go ahead on the work was given by the
council at a meeting Tuesday night.

MARCH 18, 1925
KING
RESIDENCE DESTROYED BY FLAMES: J.P. King’s home on Bruner Avenue was completely
destroyed by fire early Saturday morning. The house was a two-story nine-room
frame building. Miss Ella Hamilton, a member of the household, was the first to
awaken. The fire originated downstairs in the neighborhood of the kitchen, Miss
Hamilton called to the rest of the family and succeeded in getting them aroused
just in time to escape before the back part of the house fell in.
GREENING LODGE No. 53, A.F.&A.M., EVERGREEN,
ALABAMA: Stated communications on 2nd and 4th Thursday in
each month at 7:30 p.m. – J.T. Amos, W.M.; R.S. Smith, Sect.
WOODMEN INITIATE 14 MEMBERS: State Deputy S.S. Wiggins
is still actively engaged in the campaign for new members in Magnolia Camp, No.
133, Woodmen of the World. On Monday night almost the entire membership
attended the meeting and 14 candidates were introduced. Deputy Wiggins
conducted the floor work in such manner that the good lessons of the order were
very forcibly impressed. The Uniform Rank company will meet next Tuesday and all
members are urged to attend.
Much interest is being manifested in the camp and
local Woodmen are proud that they can now boast of the best camp in South
Alabama.

MARCH 21, 1900
Masonic Lodge Growing: For
more than a year past, the Masonic order of Evergreen has enjoyed “unusual”
growth and prosperity and continues to grow. The membership is now 42 with two
applications for affiliation and five candidates on the way. The new candidates
are Dr. Carl Rubach, Messrs. D.W. Powell, Chas. L. Sims and Max Long who have
taken the Entered Apprentice degree and G.T. Bowden, who will take the E.A.
degree at the next meeting. The F.C. degree will be conferred on the first four
named at a special meeting next Saturday night.
The lodge was instituted in
1841, since which time several hundred Masons have been made, many of whom have
died and others moved away.
The meetings are always
interesting and fairly well attended. The lodge is taking on new life and will
continue to grow.
United Confederate Veterans:
The veterans of Camp Capt. William Lee will meet at Evergreen Thurs., March 27,
at 12 o’clock p.m. for the annual election of officers and the election of
delegates to the Grand Reunion, May 30 to June 3, at Louisville, Ky. By order
of P.D. Bowles, Commander; H.M. King, Adjutant.

Greening Lodge No. 53 are notified to attend a communication on Saturday night,
March 24, at seven o’clock. Work in F.C. degree. – H.W. Hawkins, Sec.
Died at 100 Years Old: Mrs.
Dicey Barlow of Mt. Union died on Tuesday at the unusual age of 100 years and
three days. Mrs. Barlow was born on March 17, 1799, and had she lived until
next January she would have lived in three centuries. She had enjoyed
remarkably good health up to four or five years ago.
