SEPT. 11, 2008

“JACKSON - Sparta Academy’s varsity football team improved to 3-0 with a 27-0 win over 1A Region 2 rival Jackson Academy here on Friday night.
“Senior running back Mason Black led Sparta’s offense on the night, carrying the ball 15 times for 151 yards. He also caught two passes for 50 yards.”
Other standout Sparta players in that game included Justin Smith, Nick Andrews, Taylor Brown, Cody Baggett, Joey Bradley, Dalton Baggett, Steven Stuart, Alex Fleming, Dylan Davis, Perry Thompson, John McDonald, D.J. Buckhault, Devlin Crosby, Michael Morris, Neil Salter, Nick Hardin and Tyler Hamrac.

“JACKSON – Four turnovers spelled disaster for Hillcrest High School here Friday night as the Jags came up short in a 26-18 loss to 4A Region 1 rival, Jackson High School.
“Quarterback Justin Nared led the offense with 174 total yards.”
Other outstanding Hillcrest players in that game included Terrence Thomas, Malcolm Rudolph, Destin Gross, Quenton Nettles, Malcolm Jackson, Jeremy Thomas, Antonio Jordan, Earnest Williams, Dexter Chatman, Alexander Nevlous and Vincent Randleson.”

“Evergreen’s Drew Davis drops back to protect quarterback John Parker Wilson during the University of Alabama’s 20-6 win over Tulane Saturday night at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa.”

SEPT. 9, 1993

“The Sparta Academy Warriors improved to 2-0 with a close 7-6 victory over Warrior Academy’s Braves last Friday night in Eutaw.
“Ninth-grader Lyle Bell stood in for the injured Casey Grant in the backfield. Bell had 10 carries for 56 yards.”
Other standout Sparta players in that game included Britt Ward. Mike Bledsoe was Sparta’s head coach.

“The Jaguars of Hillcrest High School took on one of the top 5A teams in the state (Daphne High School) last Friday night and were defeated 26-16.
“Derrick Rudolph led the Jaguars with 53 yards on nine rushes. He was followed by (Antonio) Woods with 40 yards on nine carries, Roger Rudolph with nine carries for 34 yards and Anthony Richardson with 32 yards on 10 attempts.”
Other standout Hillcrest players in that game included Steven Rudolph and Don Ray Mixon.

“The Sparta Academy Warriors were the first recipients of the Sandy Sansing Chevrolet-Nissan School Spirit Award because of the enthusiasm shown at the Sparta-Crenshaw game on Aug. 27th. Gary Downs of WPGG presented the award to the senior football players during a pep rally held last Friday at the school. Shown receiving the award are Sandy Salo, David Williams, McPherson Cook, Downs, Britt Ward, Joey Smith, Andy Clanton, Mark Ansley and Wesley Bratton.”

“Captains for Hillcrest High School’s 1993 football team are shown. They are Anthony Richardson, Arthur Ingram, Joey Taylor and Marlo McDaniel.”

SEPT. 14, 1978

“The Evergreen Aggies scored their first victory of the season by defeating the McIntosh Demons 12-6 on Friday night.
“Sanford Moye again led the Aggie offense getting 120 yards rushing and two touchdowns.”
Other outstanding Evergreen players in that game included Michael Adams, David Crosby, Ernie Edeker, Calvin Middleton and Terrell Rabb.

“The Conecuh County High School Blue Devils came from behind to defeat the Kinston High Bulldogs 14-12 in Castleberry last Friday night.
“Fred Ewing was named player of the week because of a key block on the touchdown run and his return of an interception for a score.”
Other outstanding Castleberry players in that game included William Griffin, Calvin Howard, Wendell Kast, Terry McLendon, Ricky Reeves, Joe Richardson, Henry Sanders, Ben Smith and Page Stokes.

“The Sparta Academy Warriors evened their season record at 1-1 by trouncing the Trojans of Central Baptist, 28-0, in Mobile last Friday night.
“Ronny McKenzie had a big game Friday night as he racked up 210 yards and two touchdowns on just 12 runs and caught one pass good for three yards. Sports Information Director Byron Warren Jr. said that McKenzie scored on runs of 54 and 42 yards and also ran in a two-pointer.”
Other standout Sparta players in that game included Greg Anthony, Scott Baggett, Tony Baggett, Ira Cook, Bill Cope, Greg Crabtree, Jeff Hammonds, Jeff Hutcherson, Jeff Johnson, Robert Johnston, Bobby Mason, Mike Mixon, Cook Morrison, Bobby Padgett and Mike Raines.
Rob Kelly was Sparta’s head coach that season, and Bo Owens was assistant coach.

48 YEARS AGO
SEPT. 12, 1963

“These Lyeffion Yellow Jackets will be trying for their first win when they go against Excel at Lyeffion tomorrow night. Crouched are the starting lineman, from left, Pat Brown, Don Jones, Larry Hardee, John Grimes, Allen Cook, Keith Holcombe and Harold Brown. Standing behind them are the starting backs: Mickey Fountain, Ronnie Golson, Harold Wilson and Don Garrett.”

“The Evergreen Aggies downed a determined Lyeffion Yellow Jacket team 26 to 0 here Friday night in a game that was much, much closer than the score. It was the season opener for both schools and the first time they had played each other in over 25 years.
“A fine crowd of nearly 1,600 paid enjoyed a game that featured hard knocking by both clubs. Superior Aggie manpower and the breaks enabled Evergreen to pour across three touchdowns in the final period. Up ‘til then it had been a close one with Lyeffion having the edge after an early Aggie score.
“Coach John Law Robinson, after looking at the game films singled out Brent Thornley and Alvin Dees as outstanding on defense for the Aggies. He also was high on the work of Kenny Harper who was playing in his first game.
“Coach Shirley Frazier had words of praise for Jackets Don Jones, Don Garrett and Larry Hardee for their defensive efforts. He thought the play of Ronnie Golson, Pat Brown and Harold Wilson outstanding on offense.”

68 YEARS AGO
SEPT. 9, 1948

“Evergreen Quarterback Club announces that the annual Kickoff Party will be staged at the Evergreen High School Thursday night, Sept. 30, the night before the football game with Greenville High. Tickets have been prepared for the event and will go on sale in a few days. These tickets will entitle the holders to membership in the Quarterback Club and of course to participate in events being planned for the Kickoff Party including a fish fry, other entertainment and perhaps witness a Pee Wee game between Evergreen High Pee Wees and some other team. Other information will be given concerning the part in next week’s Courant.
“The Quarterback Club is headed this season by D.T. Stuart as president; Waynard Price, vice-president; and Moreno White, secretary-treasurer. Meetings are being held each Tuesday night, 7:30 at the library of the high school. All interested persons are urged to attend these meetings.”
