THREE YEARS AGO
NOV. 5, 2009

“Hillcrest High School’s varsity football team closed out the 2009 season with a 50-6 loss Friday night in Evergreen to Greenville High School, the No. 2-ranked team in Class 5A.
“The highlight of the night for the Jags came late in the second quarter when Hillcrest quarterback Justin Nared completed a 32-yard touchdown pass to William Ferguson to make the score 14-6.”
Other standout Hillcrest players in that game included Jeremy Thomas, Devetrick Rankin, Tarrant Jones and Eother Holder. Maurice Belser was Hillcrest’s head coach that season.

“Sparta Academy’s Joey Bradley rolled up 141 yards and two touchdowns Friday night in Evergreen to key the Warrior offense in a 56-32, season-ending loss to South Choctaw Academy.
“Bradley a 5-7, 135-pound junior running back, carried the ball 17 times for 141 yards. Sixty-five of those yards came on a long touchdown run that gave the Warriors their first points of the night. Bradley followed that touchdown with a six-yard scoring run later in the game and also scored on a two-point conversion run.”
Other standout Sparta players in that game included Nick Andrews, Michael Brown, Devlin Crosby, Nick Hardin, Chance House and Jacob Hendrix.

“The Evergreen Jaguar Pee Wees captured the Western Division Championship Saturday with wins over East Brewton and Georgiana.”

NOV. 3, 1994

“Chad Smith was named as the offensive player of the week for the Hillcrest Jaguars for the T.R. Miller game. Chad graded 2.1 and had 10 KDs. Antonio Woods was named as the defensive player of the week for the game. He had eight solos, four assists and one tackle for a loss.”

“The Sparta Academy Warriors ended their season Friday night with a 27-7 loss to Coosa Valley Academy. The Warriors finished the season with a 2-8 record.
“Sophomore Lyle Bell scored the Warriors only touchdown of the night on a run of 50 yards. Senior Brian Gorum kicked the extra point.”

“The Evergreen Tiny Mite and Pee Wee Jaguars will have their 1993 football banquet Saturday night at Marshall Middle School starting at 6 p.m. Following the banquet the induction of players into the 1994 Hall of Fame will be held.”

“This eight-pound catfish was caught by Mrs. Seale. When asked where she caught him, Mrs. Seale replied, ‘In the mouth.’”

NOV. 1, 1979

“Shan Gilmore, escorted by her father, Robert Gilmore, is crowned Miss Pee Wee Football by Mr. Pee Wee Football Buck Mims during the Termites and Pee Wees Homecoming at Lyeffion Saturday night.”

“The Thomasville Academy Panthers dominated the second half as they whipped Sparta Academy 33-14 Friday night in Thomasville.
“Ronny McKenzie scored both touchdowns for the Warriors. He broke loose on a 50-yard run for the first score and turned a short pass from Terry Peacock into an 87-yard touchdown as time ran out in the first half. Peacock swept end for two points after the first score.”
Other standout Sparta players in that game included Scott Baggett, Robert Bozeman, Ed Carrier, Trent Carrier, Greg Crabtree, Ira Cook, Gaylen Griggers, Andy Hammonds, Jeff Johnson, Bobby Mason, Mike Mixon, Cook Morrison, Darwin Nix, Richard Nix, Mike Raines and Russ Raines.

“The Conecuh County High School Devils lost their seventh game in a row Thursday night to the Excel High School Panthers by a score of 35-0.
“Coach Williamson said, ‘The Devils played hard, but made a lot of costly mistakes. We were on the six-inch line twice, and inside the 20 two more times and mistakes cost us our touchdowns.’
“They were better than we were, but we did not play up to our potential. For the first time all season long, I was not pleased with the way my ball club played.”

“The Repton Bulldogs were defeated by the Millry Tigers Friday night by a score of 14 to 7.
“Herbert Dukes and Mitch Hammack led a good defense. Dukes had eight solo tackles and 21 assists. Hammack had five solo tackles and eight assists. Offensively, Trey Wilson led the Bulldogs for 35 rushing yards and Robert McMillian had 31 yards.”

48 YEARS AGO
NOV. 5, 1964

“The Repton Bulldogs trounced the Dozier Tigers 31 to 0 Friday night in Dozier.
“Halfback Robert Lowery and wingback Davis Robinson scored twice each to pace the Bulldog attack. Lowery got the first touchdown in the opening quarter, blasting over from the one. Robinson went over from the five early in the second quarter and Lowery got his second score going over from the five to make it 18-0 at halftime.”
Other standout Repton players in that game included Jimmy Bradley and Glenn Baggett.

“Halfback Paul Deason was named ‘player of the week’ by the Evergreen Jaycees for the Aggie-Red Level game. It marked the third time this season he has won the honor and puts him in strong contending for the ‘player of the year’ award to make at the end of the season.
“Deason, a big and swift halfback, won the award with his fine all-round performance against the Tigers. He scored both Aggie touchdowns, one on a terrific 70-yard run. He also won the honor against Atmore and Lyeffion.”

“A determined band of Red Level Tigers played spoilers at Evergreen High School’s homecoming game Friday night and tied the favored Aggies 14-14.
“Deason topped the individual efforts for the Aggies, piling up a net of 124 yards on 12 carries.”
Standout Evergreen players in that game included Scott Cook, Kenny Harper, Johnny Sellers and Jimmy Warren.

63 YEARS AGO
NOV. 3, 1949

“The undefeated Evergreen High Aggies came from behind to hand Baldwin County High’s Tigers their second loss in two years, 13 to 7, in Bay Minette Friday night. An overflow crowd at Simmons Field saw the Aggies spot Bay Minette a touchdown in the first quarter and then come back with scores in the second and fourth periods to win.
“John Greel Ralls had one of the best nights of his career and reasserted his right to all-state recognition. His defensive play was flawless. He ran 20 times and netted 136 yards. He completed two passes for 58 yards. Gillis ‘Little Red’ Morgan came into his own as a quarterback. He directed the Aggie attack well and did a nice job of faking on the ‘T’ plays. Bertie Hassel ran well and did some opportune blocking. Ed Hooks, Gwyn Daniels and Donahue Edson all played good ball.”

“Undefeated Aggies Face Tough Foe In Millry Wildcats Here Friday Night: Evergreen Will Seek Sixth Win of Season: If you have the idea that Millry High will be a pushover for Evergreen Friday night, forget it, Joe. Those are Wildcats, not kittens.
“Evergreen’s undefeated Aggies will be gunning for their sixth win of the season here Friday night when they tangle with a snarling bunch of Washington County Wildcats from Millry in a Brooks Stadium battle set for 7:30.
“Coaches Wendell Hart and John Lockwood have been working their Aggies long and hard this week, getting ready for Millry.
“Coach Lockwood will start the same seven huskies in the Evergreen line that have started every game this season, Dickey Bozeman and Bruce Johnson at end, Shelton Craig and Max Pope at tackle, Douglas Potts and Jeff Moorer at guard and Capt. Jack Cunningham at center.
“Coach Hart will probably start these four in the backfield, QB Gillis Morgan, RHB Bertie Hassel, LHB John Greel Ralls and FB Ed Hooks.”
