NOV. 14, 2002

“D.D. Lewis, NFL Hall of Fame linebacker, was the guest speaker at the Evergreen Rotary Club meeting last Thursday. He played in five NFL Championship games during his playing days with the Dallas Cowboys. Pictured with Lewis are Ramone Cumagun, visiting Rotarian from the Phillipines who is also the father of Jo Jo Cumagun of Evergreen and Rotary Club President Clint Hyde.”

“The Sparta Academy Warriors lost to Central Academy 20-12 Friday night in Selma in the first round of the AISA Class A State Playoffs.
“Perry Castleberry scored the first touchdown for the Warriors on a 75-yard run. The try for the PAT was no good. Jeremy Anderson scored the Warrior’s other touchdown on an 11-yard pass from John McGinitie. The try for the two-point conversion failed.”
Other outstanding Sparta players in the game included Brandon Burleson, Paul Castleberry and Wiley Cobb.

“Artie Godwin of Evergreen took the checkered flag recently at the Butler County Motorsports Park in Greenville. The car is sponsored by Pugh’s Quick Lube in Evergreen. Pictured with Godwin are Ralph Pugh, owner of Pugh’s Quick Lube, and Carey Pugh.”

“Case Brundage, four-year-old grandson of Pop and MeMe Jenkins, recently landed this BIG Whopper ‘Cat-Daddy,’ who is an avid fisherman, says ‘All you need is ‘Pop’s secret bait’ and a Snoopy Rod & Reel, sling it out there and just reel ‘em in – it’s real easy!”

NOV. 12, 1987

“The Repton High School Bulldogs pulled the upset of the night in the first round of the state 1A playoffs as they knocked off the state’s No. 1-ranked team, Sweet Water, 17-14, in Sweet Water Friday night.
“The Conecuh County High School Blue Devils did not fare so well, losing a close, 14-8 decision to Kinston. Greg Blair scored Castleberry’s only touchdown on a one-yard sneak in the second quarter.
“Repton got going with an 80-yard kickoff return by Carl Stanton following Sweet Water’s first TD to tie the game, 7-7. Brian Bradley, who converted two extra points also, kicked Repton into the lead with a 20-yard field goal with five seconds left in the first half.
“Sweet Water scored again late in the third quarter to take a 14-10 lead. Repton scored the game-winning touchdown early in the fourth quarter with Stanton going in from the five.”

“Derrick Richardson is presented McDonald’s ‘Athlete of the Month’ award by Mrs. Jack Dwyer, assistant manager of the Evergreen McDonald’s on Highway 83. Richardson, only a freshman running back, was chosen for his outstanding play and leadership for the Conecuh County High School Blue Devils of Castleberry. He rushed for over 1,400 yards and helped the Blue Devils make the state playoffs. He received a certificate of excellence from McDonald’s and his winning of the award will be announced on WIZD (Wizard 104) radio station throughout the week.”

NOV. 9, 1972

“Aggies lose last to Andalusia: All phases of homecoming for the Evergreen Aggies were a success, except for one, the football match between the Aggies and the Andalusia Bulldogs.
“The winless Aggies drove the season to an end Friday night as they fell victim to the Andalusia Bulldogs, 41-6.
“Evergreen’s lone six came as quarterback Mike Faulkner drove the ball up the three-yard line and pushed it over with 5:30 left in the fourth quarter. The two-point conversion failed.”

“REPTON HIGH SCHOOL NEWS NOTES: The most excitement of every year to everyone is football. We are very proud of our coaches and football team of ’72-73. The coaches for this year are Mr. H.L. Watson and Glen Baggett.
“We had a full schedule this year with many exciting games. Among these were: Repton 30, Coffeeville 0; Repton 30, Lyeffion, 0; Repton 0, Excel 21; Repton 6, Fort Deposit 12; Repton 8, Sweet Water 42; Repton 12, Uriah 14; Repton 12, McKenzie 6; Repton 36, Thomaston 6; Repton 28, Frisco City 6.
“After the Frisco-Repton game the most valuable players were chosen. Offensive player was David Fails, who scored two touchdowns for a total of 140 yards. The defensive player was James Hall. These two boys were awarded with a free ticket to the Alabama-Southern Mississippi football game held Saturday night at Birmingham. The tickets were given by James F. Watson of Bermuda, Ala.
“We are now five and four and we hope to make it six and four at Fruitdale Thursday night as we play our last game of the season.”

NOV. 14, 1957

“Tommy Tatum, student at the University, attended the Alabama-Tulane game in Mobile on Saturday and spent the weekend with his parents.”

“The Evergreen Aggies played host to T.R. Miller Friday night. Miller started off things early in the first quarter as they scored a touchdown and kicked the extra point. Miller scored again in the second quarter, but the Aggies failed to score in the first half.
“Miller kicked off to the Aggies to get the second half underway. On the first play from scrimmage however, the Aggies fumbled and Miller recovered for the touchdown. Finally, in the fourth quarter, Miller scored two more touchdowns. The Aggies also scored on a pass from Grace to Daniels set up by a key block on the part of Captain Buddy Zukowski. Evergreen failed to convert and the final score was Miller 41, Evergreen 6.”

“Eagles Down Thomasville 20-7: Evergreen’s CCTS Eagles wrote ‘finis’ to the annual homecoming festivities by crushing Thomasville, 20-7. Playing an inspired brand of football, the Eagles appeared to make up for all their mistakes in previous outings. The cool crisp Saturday night air echoed the crowds’ approval as the Eagles ripped gaping holes in the Thomasville forward wall for swivel-hipped halfbacks and bulldozing fullbacks.”
Outstanding CCTS players in that game included Jimmie Armstrong, Bobby Booker, Hood Johnson, John Malden and Leroy Thomas.
