Goodreads.com announces winners of 2013 Goodreads Choice Awards

Goodreads.com, one of the biggest and most popular book-related Web sites in the world, announced the winners of the 2013 Goodreads Choice Awards Tuesday of last week.

Over 1,953,700 votes were cast by booklovers in three rounds of fan voting in what Goodreads claims is the “only major book awards decided by readers.”

The Goodreads Choice Awards were first given in 2009, and it allows readers to nominate and vote for books released during the previous year. This year, awards for “best book” were given in 20 categories, and this year’s slate of winners in those categories were as follows:

Best Fiction – “And the Mountains Echoed” by Khaled Hosseini

Best Mystery & Thriller – “Inferno” by Dan Brown

Best Historical Fiction – “Life After Life” by Kate Atkinson

Best Fantasy – “The Ocean at the End of the Lane” by Neil Gaiman

Best Paranormal Fantasy – “Cold Days” by Jim Butcher

Best Science Fiction – “Madd Addam” by Margaret Atwood

Best Romance – “Lover at Last” by J.R. Ward Best

Horror – “Doctor Sleep” by Stephen King

Best Memoir & Autobiography – “I Am Malala” by Malala Yousafzai

Best History & Biography – “Jim Henson: The Biography” by Brian Jay Jones

Best Nonfiction – “The Autistic Brain” by Temple Grandin and Richard Panek

Best Food & Cookbooks – “Tequila Mockingbird” by Tim Federle

Best Humor – “Hyperbole and a Half” by Allie Brosh

Best Graphic Novels & Comics – “Beautiful Creatures” by Kami Garcia, Margaret Stohl and Cassandra Jean

Best Poetry – “The Fall of Arthur” by J.R.R. Tolkein

Best Debut Goodreads Author – “Tangled” by Emma Chase

Best Young Adult Fiction – “Eleanor & Park” by Rainbow Rowell

Best Young Adult Fantasy – “Allegiant” by Veronica Roth

Best Middle Grade & Children’s – “The House of Hades” by Rick Riordan

Best Picture Book – “The Day the Crayons Quit” by Drew Daywalt and Oliver Jeffers

This year marked the fifth consecutive year in which the Goodreads Choice Awards have been named. The first three years, Goodreads has named a “Favorite Book of the Year,” but for whatever reason, they didn’t name one this year or last year. Favorite Book of 2011 award went to “Divergent” by Veronica Roth, and the winner of the Favorite Book of 2010 was “Mockingjay” by Suzanne Collins. The winner of the Favorite Book of 2009 was “Catching Fire” by Suzanne Collins.
