This week's movie picks are 'Transcendence' and 'The Secret Life of Walter Mitty'

It’s Wednesday, so today I give you my weekly list of movies that will open in theatres this week as well as a list of movies that will be released this week on DVD.


I hope this will serve as a useful guide as to what’s going on this week if you happen to be near a movie theatre or if you’re looking for something to drop into your NetFlix queue or pick up at the local Redbox.

Movies that are scheduled to hit theatres this week include:

- 13 Sins (Horrors, Suspense, R): Directed by Daniel Stamm and starring Ron Perlman, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Mark Webber, Devon Graye and Rutina Wesley.Authors

- Anonymous (Comedy, PG-13): Directed by Ellie Kanner and starring Kaley Cuoco, Chris Klein, Dennis Farina, Dylan Walsh and Teri Polo.

- Bears (Documentary, G): Directed by Alastair Fothergill and Keith Scholey and starring the voice of John C. Reilly.

- Blue Ruin (Drama, Suspense, R): Directed by Jeremy Saulnier and starring Macon Blair, Amy Hargreaves, Devin Ratray, Eve Plumb and Kevin Kolack.

- A Haunted House 2 (Comedy, Horror, R): Directed by Michael Tiddes and starring Marlon Wayans, Essence Atkins, Jaime Pressly, Cedric the Entertainer and Gabriel Iglesias.

- Heaven is for Real (Drama, Family, PG): Directed by Randall Wallace and starring Greg Kinnear, Kelly Reilly, Connor Corum, Margo Martindale and Thomas Haden Church.

- Redwood Highway (Drama, PG-13): Directed by Gary Lundgren and starring Shirley Knight, Tom Skerritt, Danforth Comins, Catherine E. Coulson and Sam Daly.

- Small Time (Comedy, Drama, R): Directed by Joel Surnow and starring Christopher Meloni, Bridget Moynahan, Devon Bostick, Dean Norris and Xander Berkeley.

- Tasting Menu (Drama, PG-13): Directed Roger Gual and starring Fionnula Flanagan, Stephen Rea, Claudia Bassols, Togo Igawa and Jan Cornet.

- Transcendence (Action, Science Fiction, PG-13): Directed by Wally Pfister and starring Johnny Depp, Rebecca Hall, Paul Bettany, Morgan Freeman and Cillian Murphy.

New DVD releases this week include:

- Black Nativity (Drama, Family, Musical, PG): Directed by Kasi Lemmons and starring Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett, Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. Blige and Jacob Latimore.

- Copperhead (Drama, War, PG-13): Directed by Ronald F. Maxwell and starring Billy Campbell, Peter Fonda, Angus Macfadyen, Augustus Prew and Francois Arnaud.

- Date and Switch (Comedy, R): Directed by Chris Nelson and starring Dakota Johnson, Sarah Hyland, Hunter Cope, Zach Cregger and Nick Offerman.

- Great Expectations (Drama, Romance, PG-13): Directed by Mike Newell and starring Helena Bonham Carter, Ralph Fiennes, Sally Hawkins, Holliday Grainger and Robbie Coltrane.

- The Nut Job (Comedy, PG): Directed by Peter Lepeniotis and starring the voices of Will Arnett, Liam Neeson, Katherine Heigl, Brenda Fraser and Sarah Gadon.

- Philomena (Comedy, Drama, PG-13): Directed by Stephen Frears and starring Judi Dench, Steve Coogan, Mare Winningham, Michaelle Fairley and Sophie Kennedy Clark.

- Ride Along (Action, Comedy, PG-13): Directed by Tim Story and starring Kevin Hart, Ice Cube, John Leguizamo, Tika Sumpter and Bryan Callen.

- The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (Comedy, Drama, PG): Directed by Ben Stiller and starring Stiller, Kristen Wiig, Sean Penn, Adam Scott and Patton Oswalt.

If I could only watch one movie at the theatre this week, it would be “Transcendence,” and if I had to pick just one DVD to rent this week, it would be “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.”
