MAY 23, 1996

Local weather reporter Harry Ellis reported high temperatures of 89 degrees on May 18 and May 19 and a low of 52 on May 13.

“Sarah Lenn Lanier, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Lanier, is the valedictorian of Hillcrest High School’s Class of 1996.”

“Sherri Salter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Salter of Lenox, is the salutatorian of Hillcrest High School’s Class of 1996.”

“Anne Coker, a National Merit Scholar, is Fort Dale-South Butler Academy’s valedictorian for the graduating class of 1996. Anne is the daughter of Stan and Linda Coker of Evergreen.”

“Luke Anthony, member of the Hillcrest High School ‘Gold’ FFA Chapter, was the second place winner in the State Tractor Driving Competition.”

“(Evergreen) Mayor (Lomax) Cassady then told the council that he had a request from the Economic Development Director to see if the council would consider reserving 35 parking places if a department store agreed to locate in the old B.C. Moore & Sons building. After a brief discussion, Mr. King made a motion that if a problem arises in the future with parking in downtown Evergreen, the city council will take action to try to solve the problem. The motion was seconded by Mrs. Brock. The motion passed when King and Brock voted in favor of the motion. Mr. Lee voted against the motion, and councilmen Caylor and Fluker abstained.”

“Kim Whatley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William K. Whatley, is valedictorian of the 1981 graduating class of Evergreen High School. Stanley Stallworth, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Stallworth, is salutatorian.”

“Trey Wilson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh E. Wilson of Wildfork, is the valedictorian of the 1981 graduating class at Repton High School. Barney Tyree Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Barney Tyree of Range, is salutatorian.”

“Renee Anderson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Anderson, is valedictorian of the 1981 graduating class at Lyeffion High School. James McClammy, son of Mr. and Mrs. James S. McClammy, is salutatorian.”

“Jerri Weaver, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Olan Weaver of Rt. 1, Castleberry, was selected by grade point average as valedictorian of the senior class of Conecuh County High School, according to Ronnie Brogden, principal. Sharon Warren Weaver with the second highest grade point average was selected as salutatorian of the senior class of Conecuh County High School.”

Local weather reporter Earl Windham reported 2.57 inches of rain on May 19. He reported a high of 94 on May 18 and lows of 49 on May 20 and May 21.

MAY 26, 1966

“The Conecuh County Hospital has been approved and signed a contract to participate in the Medicare hospital care program. Administrator Jack Hethcox was notified this week of the local hospital’s approval.”

“Hearing is set on closing of depot at Repton: A hearing has been set by the Alabama Public Service Commission on the application of the L&N Railroad Co. for authority to discontinue the operation of its station agency, discontinue less-than-carload freight service and remove the depot building at Repton.
“Repton presently serves as governing agency for the non-agency station at Drewry. In the event this application is granted, the L&N proposes to establish Peterman as governing agency for both Repton and Drewry.”

“The Pinkney D. Bowles Chapter of U.D.C. met Tuesday night, May 17, in the fellowship hall of the Masonic building.”

“Second Lt. Charles C. Higdon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Higdon, Rt. 2, Box 34, Evergreen, completed a three-week airborne course at the Army Infantry School, Fort Benning, Ga., May 2.
“His training, which included five jumps from a C-130 airplane flying 170 miles an hour at an altitude of 1,250 feet, qualified Lt. Higdon as a parachutist.
“The 23-year-old officer is a 1960 graduate of Evergreen High School.”

“Myrtice Waller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.G. Waller, Lenox, is graduating from Repton High School with a perfect attendance record. She has never missed a day from school from the first through the twelfth grades."

MAY 25, 1951

“During a recent five-minute speed test on familiar material, Pete Wells typed 98 words per minute with three errors. This speed sets a new record for second year typists at Evergreen High School.”

“Proud Mother – And Wife: All parents of graduates at Evergreen High School will be proud Friday night, but one will be doubly proud. She’ll be proud of her daughter, the class salutatorian, and she’ll be proud of her husband, who will receive his diploma.
“This proud mother is Mrs. Elisha Hart. Her daughter, Elizabeth or more familiarly known as Betty, is the salutatorian of the class of 1951.
“Graduating with Betty is her father, Master Sgt. Elisha Hart. Sgt. Hart will realize an ambition of many years and one that has required determination and hard work on his part when he receives his diploma. He is 48 years old and completed his high school education in the continuation for veterans at Evergreen High.
“Sgt. Hart is now serving with Battery ‘C,’ 117th Field Artillery Battalion, 31st (Dixie) Division at Fort Jackson, S.C.”

“Edward J. Beasley, seaman, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Robinson of Box 73, Castleberry, Ala., and husband of Mrs. Lois Beasley of 1506 Dauphin St., Mobile, is serving aboard the destroyer escort, USS M.J. Manuel, which he helped to recommission recently at the U.S. Naval Station, San Diego, Calif.”

MAY 28, 1936

“Under date of May 25, a work order was issued to E.M. Williams of Monroe, Ga., to whom the contract has been awarded for the construction of the new post office building in Evergreen.”

“After an absence of nine years from his native country, Denmark, Knud Thomsen, owner of the Evergreen Hatchery, is going back for a visit to relatives and friends there for two or three months. Mr. Thomsen left Evergreen Wednesday night of this week for New York City where he will visit for one week before sailing June for Denmark.”

“By a majority of 55 votes, Dr. J.R. Brooks was elected to the office of mayor of Evergreen in Tuesday’s primary election over J.R. Kelley, his only opponent.
“For members of the city council, C.B. Wilson, Cecil Hagood, J.W. Shannon, J.H. (Hub) Robison and J.T. Gailard were elected.”

“Castleberry, Ala., May 26 – Roderick Matthews was nominated for mayor Castleberry in the primary here today, receiving 56 votes to 17 for J.W. Yancey.
“Members of the council chosen were Albert Griffin, A.S.J. Nettles, J.R. Riggs, L.H. Wilson and A.N. Riggs.
“Matthews will succeed C.E. Robinson, who was recently named to the board of revenue.”

“Mrs. Cary Murphy of Montgomery, spent a few days last week with Mr. Murphy, who is operating the new Standard Service Station.”
