“Hand takes reigns of Warriors: On May 20, 18 years since he last held a coaching position, Don Hand will assume the head coach’s duties at Sparta Academy.
“Hand is replacing Gerry Watson as the Warriors’ head coach. Watson will remain on staff and is helping conduct spring drills with Coach Russ Brown.

“State Record: Sparta’s Erica Palmer set a new state record in the 400-meter run with a time of 1:06.74. She was also third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 29.91. She also placed fourth in the high jump with a jump of four feet, four inches. She was fifth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 14.31.”

“Justin Nared belted a pair of home runs, including a grand slam, last Thursday to lead the Astros past the Orioles, 11-1, in Evergreen Little League play at the city’s park.”

“Hillcrest High School’s Jaguars will wrap up spring football drills Tuesday in East Brewton when the team takes on W.S. Neal High School’s Eagles.
“Head coach Arlton Hudson said the game was originally scheduled to be played Friday in Evergreen. the date was changed at Neal’s request because the Eagles have hired a new head coach. The location was changed because Hillcrest’s pressbox that was damaged during Hurricane Ivan has not been repaired.”

“Rusty Salter won the Heat Race at the Butler County Motorsports Park in Greenville on Sat., May 7.”

“BABE RUTH BASEBALL RESULTS: Tues., May 1: Evergreen Auto Parts 7, Wolff Motors 6: Aaron Gessner doubled down the right field line and scored on a throwing error to give Evergreen Auto Parts a 7 to 6 come from behind win over Wolff Motors. Gary Reymundo got credit for the win on the mound.
“Presley-Fluker 7, McKenzie Merchants 4: Presley-Fluker held off the McKenzie Merchants by the score of 7 to 4 in the second game of the night. Shalane Lowery took the win on the mound, going the distance.
“Sat., May 5: Presley-Fluker 9, Evergreen Auto Parts 8: Presley-Fluker kept their perfect record intact with a close one-run win over Evergreen Auto Parts with a final score of 9 to 8 in the first game of the night. Isaac McMillian got credit for the win on the mound for Presley-Fluker.
“Wolff Motors 16, McKenzie Merchants 11: Wolff Motors got their first win of the season with a 16 to 11 win over the McKenzie Merchants. Bryant Robinson went four-for-four at the plate for Wolff Motors and Britt Ward pitched a complete seven innings and got the win on the mound.”

“World Champion Turkey Caller Eddie Salter added more trophies this year to his already full trophy case. Salter won the 1990 Mossy Oak Call of the Wild Championship and the 1990 Southeastern Open Turkey Calling Championship. He placed second in the World Turkey Calling Championship and second in the Alabama State Contest.”

“The Northcutt’s team won first place in the Evergreen Men’s Softball League pre-season tournament recently. Shown are sponsor Waynard Price, Ray Griffin, bat boy, Terry Coleman, coach, John David Adams, Wendell Burt, Jacob Coleman, Bill Van Horn and Jimmy Brown; Clayton Barlow, Ronnie Jones, Bill Bailey, Sammy Brown, Eddie Hooks, Terry Chapman and Rogene Booker. Not shown are Jerry Peacock, Ronnie Pugh and Don Owens.”

From “The Colyum” by Bob Bozeman - “The Sparta Quarterback Club will hold its annual All Sports Banquet tonight at 7:30 in the school gymnatorium. President James Ansley got a winner for a speaker when he persuaded Paul Crane to do the honors. Paul is now an assistant coach at the University of Alabama where he was an All-American center and linebacker. He also played linebacker for the New York Jets for several years and was a starter on their Super Bowl Championship Team.
“Paul will make an interesting and inspiring talk, I’m sure. You might still be able to get a ticket. Check at the school or at The Courant office.
“Incidentally, Paul likes to play golf and if the weather permits some of us intend to introduce him to the pine trees of the Evergreen Golf Club this afternoon.”

“Lyeffion’s QB meet tonight: The Lyeffion High School Quarterback Club will meet tonight at 7:30 at the school. All members and others interested in Yellow Jacket sports are urged to attend.”

MAY 12, 1960

“Aggies End Season With Win Over Tigers: The Evergreen Aggies won their last game of the season Tuesday by taking T.R. Miller High School by a score of 1-0.
“Frank Pugh was on the mound for Evergreen and Billy Melton was behind the plate. This victory gives Pugh five wins and no defeats. The Evergreen club closed the season with a record of 11 wins and two defeats.
“James Reeves and Johnny Ivey got two hits apiece in Tuesday’s game.
“On being interviewed after the game, Coach Jeff Moorer said, ‘I think that everyone will agree that my boys played A-1 baseball this year. We only had three seniors playing this past season, but next year we will have a large group of seniors who will be available. I feel sure that Evergreen will be going to the state tournament next year.”

“Aggies Trounce Repton: The Evergreen Aggies bombed the Repton nine last week to the tune of 15-4 with the splendid pitching of Billy Bateman. The local squad collected 11 hits, one of which was a circuit blow into the right field stands, but they were not ruled as homers because of the proximity of those bleachers. Repton claimed their share of the long balls with two four-baggers.”

“Evergreen vs. Castleberry: The Aggies turned back the Blue Devils from Castleberry, 7-1, this past week. The Aggies supported Frank Pugh with seven runs on nine hits. The Castleberry nine scored their long run in the sixth on an error.”
