That’s the question a 56-year-old woman from Monroe County
was left asking after a spooky experience in the wee hours of the morning on
Jan. 30. The woman, who asked that her name be withheld, said that she and her
family were sleeping in a camper at Lot 24, when her small dog had to go out in
the middle of the night. She put the dog on a leash, and they walked across the
road to an area where there aren’t any camper lots.
The woman and her dog then walked down a trail through a
small patch of trees damaged by Hurricane Sallie. On their way back, they
passed through an area that was across from their camper, where there weren’t
any lots. That’s when something very strange and unexpected happened.
“Something
grabbed my hair and hood and the back of my jacket hard,” she said. “I turned
around and nothing was there. It pure snatched my jacket tight.”
The
woman described herself as short, and the trees were so far above her head that
she’s sure that a limb didn’t snag her jacket. She noted that while this
happened in the middle of the night, she could see clearly thanks to a bright
full moon.
“Whatever
it was, my hair, hood and back of my jacket were pulled very hard,” she said. “We
won’t discuss exactly what I said at that moment, but it let go, and I turned
around and nothing was there. Nothing.”
The
woman noted that her dog wasn’t alarmed by the incident. Instead of reacting to
what was happening, the dog seemed unconcerned and oblivious to her owner’s
plight. The woman said the incident scared her so bad that on her way back to
the camper she stayed out of the shadows as best she could, and she didn’t
venture outside on the following night.
In
the days after the incident, the woman discussed what happened with her
husband, family and friends. They didn’t know what to make of it, but her
husband wonders if there was once an old house on the spot where the
jacket-pulling incident occurred. He said that the way the trees are arranged there
makes him think that a house may have been there at one time.
The
woman also noted that years ago someone told her that before the dam was
constructed there were many old homes and cemeteries in the Millers Ferry area.
Due to the construction of the dam, many of those old home places and
graveyards are now underwater. She said she could not help but wonder if that
may have had something to do with her eerie experience on Jan. 30.
In the end, the woman wanted to share her story to see if anyone else has experienced anything unusual at the Millers Ferry Campground. With that said, if anyone in the reading audience has had a spooky experience or knows any ghost stories from that area, please let me know. When all is said and done, we may learn that more than a few people have stories to share about odd things that “go bump in the night” at this popular campground.
