Evergreen weather observer Harry Ellis reported 0.21 inches of rain on Jan. 24, 0.02 inches on Jan. 25 and 0.42 inches on Jan. 30. He reported a high of 74 degrees on Jan. 29 and a low of 27 on Jan. 26.

Tommy Smith, president of the Alabama District Attorneys Association, and Tommy Chapman, District Attorney for the 35th Judicial Circuit and former president of the ADA, place a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Solider in September 2010. They placed the wreath at the tomb in honor of all the fallen law enforcement officers in the country.

Award nominees named by Chamber: This year’s slate of nominees for the Evergreen-Conecuh County Business Person of the Year Award was announced last Thursday by the Evergreen-Conecuh County Chamber of Commerce.
This year’s nominees include Martha Booker, owner of Zack’s Restaurant; Robert Bozeman, the owner and publisher of The Evergreen Courant; and Harriet Hyde, the owner of Treasures on the Corner. The winner will be honored during the Chamber’s annual membership banquet, which will be held Feb. 24.
This year, members of the general public can cast a vote for their favorite nominee at the local Chamber of Commerce office or by mailing their vote (to the office).
This year’s Chamber of Commerce membership banquet will be held on Thurs., Feb. 24, at 6 p.m. at Hillcrest High School in Evergreen. The guest speaker will be Jim Searcy, the new executive director of the Coastal Gateway Economic Development Authority.

Allen-Ashley, Inc., the first industry to build a plant in the new Evergreen Industrial Park, held its grand opening Saturday morning. Taking part in the ribbon-cutting ceremony were Wiley Salter, Dale Goneke, an owner of Allen-Ashley, Sam Kelly, president of The Union Bank which financed the project, Evergreen Mayor Pat Poole, Mrs. Linda Goneke, an owner of Allen-Ashley, and Judge of Probate Frank T. Salter, chairman of the Evergreen Industrial Development Board which developed the Industrial Park.

Mrs. Willene Whatley was re-elected president of the Evergreen Chamber of Commerce for a third term of office at the annual membership and promotion banquet at the Holiday Inn Thursday night.
A record crowd of 157 was present, including the local state legislative delegation, Senator Francis (Sister) Strong of Demopolis and Rep. Jimmy Warren of Castleberry, both of whom spoke briefly to the group.
Judge of Probate Frank T. Salter introduced the featured speaker, Sheldon Morgan, Mobile bank executive. Morgan made a timely and thought-provoking address during which he congratulated the local Chamber and its affiliates for the manner in which they are working together.

Evergreen weather observer Earl Windham reported no rain between Jan. 26 and Feb. 1. He reported a high of 69 degrees on Feb. 1 and a low of 14 on Jan. 28.

Evergreen Mayor Pat Poole signs a document proclaiming Feb. 9-15 as Vocational Education Week as Pamela Poole, president of the FHA/HERO Chapter at Conecuh County AVC watches.

R.G. Bozeman Sr. Appears In History Of ‘Bama Press Ass’n: Forty-nine Alabama newspapers have furnished presidents of the Alabama Press Association since it was organized in 1871.
R.G. Bozeman Sr., publisher emeritus of The Evergreen Courant, served a two-year term as president of the association.
These and other facts are found in the “History of the Alabama Press Association,” a copy of which will be presented to each member attending the Association’s annual meeting in Montgomery, Feb. 4-6. The history was written by L.O. Brackeen, Director of Public Information, Auburn University.

Large Crowd Attends Grand Opening Here: A crowd estimated at about 400 attended the grand opening of the Owens Truck and Tractor Co. in Evergreen this past Saturday.
Pancakes and coffee were served to all who attended, free of charge. The company represents the International Farmall Tractor & Truck Co. Ed Owens is the owner of the new business, assisted by Wilbur Owens Jr., manager, B.G. Jones, parts manager, and Wilbur Stonestreet, mechanic.
There were two prizes awarded at the opening. Both prizes were $25 U.S. savings bonds. The winners were Guy Mason and Elmer Waters, both of Evergreen.

Rattlesnake Hunt Is Scheduled In C’Berry: The Conecuh County Rattlesnake Convention started Feb. 1 and will continue until Feb. 27, according to Luther McDonald and J.E. (Shug) Skinner, co-chairmen.
Jack Holland of Castleberry is secretary of the organization. It will be Holland’s duty to weigh, measure and judge the snakes caught. All hunters must register with the secretary and pay $1 registration fee in order to be eligible for prize money.

FEB. 6, 1936

New Orleans Firm Low Bidder On Evergreen Bridge Project: Contract for the construction of the Evergreen overpass is expected to be formally awarded at an early date to the W. Horace Williams Co. of New Orleans.
This firm’s offer to build the bridge for $132,000 was the lowest of four submitted and opened Friday at the office of the state highway department in Montgomery. The formal award must await the approval of the United States bureau of public roads.
Date for the start of the work is not yet known here, nor is it known whether or not all labor now being used on Evergreen’s street improvement project will be transferred to the bridge.
As far as Mayor Jones knows, however, the labor will be transferred. He has been making efforts to retain the WPA labor on the streets but has not received any assurance that they will not be transferred.

Aged Citizen Succumbs To Stroke Jan. 30: Funeral services were held Fri., Jan. 31, 1936 for John Calvin Black, a resident of Conecuh County, living near Garland, Ala., who died Thurs., Jan. 30, at 12 o’clock noon following a stroke of paralysis.
The deceased, aged 82, was born Feb. 20, 1853 and came to Alabama from Kentucky in 1876. He was widely known in Conecuh and Butler counties where he was a landowner, having been one of the earlier settlers in Conecuh County. He was one of the oldest deacons of the Union Baptist church of which he was a member for a number of years.
Services were held at the Concord Methodist church with the Rev. Fred Brown, pastor of the Owassa Baptist church, conducting, assisted by the Rev. Sells, pastor of the Concord church.
