Evergreen Baptist Church is celebrating its Sesquicentennial during March 1995. Its pastor, the Rev. Jack Williamson and its Sesquicentennial Committee invite the public to participate in special emphases scheduled for March 5, 12 and 19. The Founders Day Service will be observed on Sun., March 19, and will be followed by the noon meal in the Activities Building. Historical items will be on display all month.
With a current membership of 602 and a current budget of $218,000 and under the leadership of a beloved pastor and effective preacher, seasoned by 20 years of service locally, the Evergreen Baptist Church is poised to move with strength into the 21st Century (just five years away).
The Evergreen Baptist Church was constituted on March 15, 1845 with seven members, all by transfer of letter.

Mr. Frank McInvale was recently presented a 50-year pin by local Woodmen of the World field rep Mitch Crutchfield.

The George Washington Hollinger Sr. Foundation, Inc. announces the 1995 Bernice Hollinger Memorial Scholarship to be given a high school graduate living within a 50-mile radius of Repton.
The 1994 recipient of the Bernice Hollinger Memorial Scholarship was Miss Toris K. Brown. Miss Brown is a freshman at Alabama Southern Community College in Monroeville.

MARCH 7, 1974

BAY MINETTE, ALA.  – Edwin L. Booker of the Evergreen Police Department recently received his diploma after completing a six-week course in Basic Police Training at James H. Faulkner State Junior College here.
Booker was elected president of the class of 37 and was presented a Certificate of Achievement for outstanding service and accomplishments as a student in the Law Enforcement Training Program. Circuit Judge Robert E.L. Key of Evergreen, the commencement speaker, made the presentation to Booker.

Donald Janes of the Sand Cut community qualified Friday as a candidate for Member of the County Board of Education, Place 4. It is his first political venture.
Janes graduated from Conecuh County High School, Castleberry, where he was a member of the basketball team and active in other school affairs. He served with the U.S. Army in the Vietnam War. He is employed by Container Corporation at Brewton.

BAY MINETTE, ALA. - Donald L. McInnis, a member of the Monroeville Police Department, recently received his diploma after completing a six-week course in Basic Training at James H. Faulkner State Junior College here. McInnis is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence McInnis of Rt. 1, Repton.

Rev. James W. (Jim) Minor of Birmingham is the new pastor of Lyeffion Baptist Church, Rt. 1, Evergreen.

MARCH 4, 1965

Durlyn Davis is Miss Lyeffion High School for 1965 having been crowned at the annual FHA Beauty Pageant. Durlyn is a senior and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Davis.

Miss Margaret Hagood, Alabama’s 1964 Junior Miss, crowned the 1965 Junior Miss, Miss Heather Strait of Montgomery, at the Junior Miss Pageant in Birmingham recently. Margaret completed her reign with the coronation of Heather. She is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Joseph H. Hagood of Evergreen.

Final rites held for Mrs. Salter: Mrs. Ann Brooks Salter, age 50, died unexpectedly at her residence on Liberty Hill Drive Friday morning. She was one of the few women to ever hold elective office in Conecuh County, having served as Circuit Clerk and Register.
Mrs. Salter served as Circuit Clerk by appointment in the 1940s, and as Deputy Clerk when her husband, who held the office, was recalled to active Army duty during the Korean War. In 1952, when her husband was on active duty and due to time limitations could not qualify for re-election, she filed for the office and won it.

Robert Lee Page, age 72, died at the home of Mike O’Brien in Baker, La. on Sat., Feb. 27.
Mr. Page was born in Evergreen on March 4, 1892. He was employed by the L&N Railroad Co. as train dispatcher and telegrapher for a number of years, working at local stations from Montgomery to Mobile, including about seven years at Georgiana. He later became associated with the Illinois Central Railroad as train dispatcher and after 41 years service, he retired as chief train dispatcher in 1958 with a total of more than 53 years service with two railroads.

MARCH 6, 1958

Two Men Killed Tuesday In Crash Near Evergreen: A Marine flight instructor and a Naval flight student were killed Tuesday afternoon in the crash of their T-28 trainer at the edge of Middleton Field five miles west of Evergreen.
The instructor was 1st Lt. David Bruce Mahorney, 25, Hartford City, Indiana. The student pilot was listed as Ensign Richard E. Cossitt, Atlanta.
The plane fell to earth at the west boundary of Middleton Field near the home of Len Mitchell about 1:15 p.m. According to bystanders, the plane had just left the runway flying north when apparently motor trouble caused it to plunge to the ground. The two men were killed instantly.
They were assigned to Whiting Field, a Pensacola Naval Air Station auxiliary at Milton, Fla.

Workmen began dismantling the old Conecuh County Jail building Monday after the demolition had been delayed two weeks by a temporary restraining order. The old jail has been replaced by a new one which along with the sheriff’s offices occupies the top floor of a new addition to the courthouse.

John Reid took the oath of office as a member of the (Evergreen city) council at Tuesday’s meeting. He was appointed to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of veteran Councilman O.B. Tuggle.)

MARCH 5, 1924

Birmingham Flyers Land Here Saturday: Saturday morning at 10:30 o’clock, the Birmingham escadrille, 106th Observation Squadron, Alabama National Guard, from Roberts Field, Birmingham, landed on the field of Troop 55, Machine Gun Squadron, here. The flyers were guests of the local guard officers. The four planes were in command of Capt. Sumter Smith and with him were lieutenants Price, Jonds, Babson and Kirkham and sergeants Parsons, Gobbert and Elder. The aviators were shown around the city and were luncheon guests at the Evergreen hotel. Their departure was made at 1:30 p.m. Capt. Smith and his officers were on their way to Mobile for the aerial meet at Mardi Gras.

Leon Layfield pleaded guilty to the murder of Melvin Brantley in the circuit court at Mobile last week and was sentenced to imprisonment for life in the state penitentiary. The youthful murderer refused to reveal the reasons that prompted him to take the life of his companion. Young Brantley’s body was found about a week after the crime in a swamp near Tensaw river with eight bullet wounds from a 22-calibre rifle in his head. The murder was committed in November last. Young Brantley was born and reared in Beat One of this county.

Charles B. Savage, long a prominent citizen of Evergreen, died on Monday at his home in Brundidge. The news of his death came in a telegram to Judge Dunn from Mrs. Savage. The funeral occurred on Tuesday morning at Brundidge.
