City Manager Clayton Davis reported to the council that they have opened bids for lighting on the Babe Ruth field at the park for the second time, and the council received two bids. The council accepted the lower of the bids, $18,158 from Hughes Supply, a company that is a regular vendor with the city.

The (Sparta Academy) Warriors (baseball team) opened play with a game against Wilcox Tuesday afternoon. Sparta should have a lighted field ready for games as early as March 14.
(Players on Sparta’s baseball team that year included Brandon Pipken, Will Ivey, Damon Godwin, Chris Cinereski, Blake Stanford, Jamie Mason, J.T. Murphy, Tony Raines, Bracken Davis, Brian Bolton, Justin Sexton, Justin Booker and Eric Talbot. Mike Bledsoe was head coach.)

Cold shooting in the third and fourth quarters spelled doom for the state’s No. 9-ranked Hillcrest Jaguars last week in the 4A Southeast Region tournament in Troy. They stayed with No. 1-ranked Southside-Selma until the early minutes of the third period before succumbing 73-55.
Hillcrest placed only two players in double figures. Willie Dixon netted 14 points while Chris Hines added 12 points and topped the rebounding charts with 10 boards.
