Aggies, Lyeffion Play Here Friday In Season-Opener: Coach John Law Robinson’s Evergreen High Aggies go against Coach Dale Long’s Lyeffion Yellow Jackets here Friday night in the season-opener for both basketball teams.
Both ‘B’ and varsity games are scheduled with the Bees opening it up at seven o’clock in Memorial Gymnasium at EHS. The varsity clash follows.
Coach Long isn’t giving out too much information on his team these days, but the former Beatrice and Troy State College star can be counted on to come up with a scrapping, well-coached band of Jackets.
Robinson, back at his Alma Mater once more, released a brief rundown on his club to The Courant today. He said that he will use the Auburn shuffle with variations to be added as the season progresses. Fast break will be used when the situation permits to utilize better-than-average speed and compensate for lack of height.
Defense wise, Robinson sums it up: “Defense will be planned and varied according to opponents style of play. Equal time and emphasis is being given to offense and defense. Will use zone or man-to-man.”
Robinson also released this brief sketch of the individual players on the varsity:
Billy Bateman, Sr., 5-8 veteran, good playmaker, fine outside shot, excellent ball handler, hustler.
Billy Melton, Sr., 6-0 veteran, rebounds well, good driver.
Conner Warren, Jr., 5-8, fast, good playmaker, likes to play defense, good driver.

E.H.S. Aggie Cagers Open With T.R. Miller In Brewton Tues. Nite: Evergreen High’s Aggie Cagers open their season with varsity and B team games in Brewton next Tuesday night with the T.R. Miller Tigers.
Head coach Wendell Hart has only two returning lettermen to rebuild this year’s squad from. Hardest man to replace will be EHS’s All-Time center and basketball player, towering Randy White. White led last year’s team to the best record in the history of the school and to the State High School Basketball Tournament as he broke every existing school record.
However, Coach Hart expects to field another strong team building it around his two outstanding returning lettermen, Wayne Frazier and Mickey Joyner. Both boys stand 6-3 and have scoring and rebounding ability that should spell plenty of trouble to Aggie opponents.
Frazier will probably jump at center, but Bill Ivey and Bert Cook will both be used at the pivot position with Frazier probably shifting to alternate forward with Joyner while working the ball.
Working in the back court at the guards will be Zeke Zukowski, Jimmy Moorer and Jack Harper, all moving up from the B team. Jimmy Bell, Robbie Boykin, W.A. Pate and George Pugh are all right in the thick of the battle for a starting position.
B team coach Ray Owens said that he would have more to say about his squad after they saw a little action as every position is still wide open.

Mr. and Mrs. D.T. Stuart and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Sessions spent the weekend in Birmingham and attended the Auburn-Alabama football game.
