After watching a
game with Greenville slip away Tuesday of last week in Greenville, Hillcrest
finished strong Friday to seal a 60-46 win over Monroe County High School in Monroeville.
Senior Chris Hines
was a dominant force inside, finishing with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Hillcrest players in that game included Justin Holder, Richard Johnson,
Cleveland Knight, Nick Lovelace, Curtis Richardson, P.K. Riley and Derrell
Simpson.)
After being held
under 40 points Tuesday of last week in a 67-32 loss to Faith Academy, Sparta’s
Lady Warriors exploded for 52 points to defeat Calvary Christian Academy,
52-13, last Thursday at Calvary.
Susan Ann Cook, a
5-6 sophomore, topped Sparta’s offense with her 14 points.

Sparta girls players in that game included Hayden Armuelles, Erin Brock, Deanna
Covin, Camarena Godwin, Kimber Godwin, Morgan Harden, Mallory Kendrick, Kara
Layton and Erica Palmer.)
Sparta Academy’s
varsity boys shook off a 56-23 loss to Faith Academy Tuesday of last week to
defeat Calvary Christian Academy 63-49 northeast of Montgomery Thursday.
Will Ivey, a senior
forward, finished with 15 points, four assists and three steals to pace the Warriors.
(Other standout
Sparta players in that game included Chase Brown, Michael Campbell, Chris
Cinereski, Ethan Johnson, Tony Raines and Eric Talbot.)

Sparta Academy’s
varsity girls basketball team beat Crenshaw Christian, 47-39, on Nov. 30, 1999
in Evergreen.
Scoring in double
figures for the Lady Warriors were Ashley Hammonds with 14 points and Katie
Etheridge with 13 points. Also putting points on the board were Sally Hartley
with nine points, Laura Wiggins with six points, Jill Pate with three points
and Jessica Bennett with two points.

Sparta’s varsity girls team that year included Susan Ivey, Mary Robinson and
Jessica Armuelles.)
Sparta’s varsity
boys suffered a 55-53 loss to Crenshaw that night.
Jake Adams played
his best game of the season last Tuesday, putting 23 points on the board. Also
scoring in double figures was Lee Booker with 13 points. Rounding out the
scoring were Kyle Johnston with seven points, John McKenzie and Derrick
Williams with four points each and Justin Tranum with two points.
On Dec. 2, 1999 in
Evergreen, Sparta’s varsity boys suffered a 86-63 loss to Escambia Academy.
Scoring double
figures for the Warriors were Lee Booker and John McKenzie with 12 points each.
They were followed closely by Derrick Williams with nine points, Justin Tranum
eight points and Rusty Salter with five points. Rounding out the scoring for
the Warriors were Kyle Johnston, Jimmy Hyde and Tyler Petrey with four points.

Sparta cagers to
play here Friday: The Sparta Academy Warriors will tangle with the Fort Dale
Academy Warriors in three basketball games here Friday night at the Fort Dale
Lewis Armory. Action gets underway with a junior game at six followed by the
‘B’ contest and the varsity will tip off at eight o’clock.
Tonight, Sparta will
play Marengo Academy in an invitational tournament at Catherine Academy. If
they win this one, they will return to tournament play Saturday afternoon.
The Warriors downed
Greenville Academy here last Friday night in their first and only game of the
new season.

Castleberry Sets
Basketball Meet: The annual Conecuh County Invitational Tournament will be held
this year at Conecuh County High School in Castleberry on Dec. 19 and 20.
Eight teams are
participating: T.R. Miller of Brewton, Georgiana, Beatrice, Excel, Repton,
Lyeffion, Moore Academy of Pineapple and Conecuh County High.
The Evergreen Aggies
downed the T.R. Miller Tigers 47-38 Saturday night in Evergreen.
Jimmy Raines led the
win with 12 points and seven rebounds. Sid Lambert tallied 11 points for the
victors.
(Other outstanding
Evergreen basketball players that year included Scott Cook, Larry Ellis, Ronnie
Jackson, Donnie Jones, Ronnie Jones, Willie Mack Pate, Winston Pugh and Joe
Sasser.)
Holiday Tourney Is
Set At E.H.S. Dec. 17, 18, 20: The first annual Holiday Invitational basketball
tournament will be held at Memorial Gymnasium at Evergreen High School on Dec.
17, 18 and 20. Six outstanding teams of this area will compete.
(Teams in the
tourney included Escambia County High School of Atmore, Evergreen, Georgiana,
Greenville, Monroeville and J.U. Blacksher of Uriah.)
Coach Wayne Pope’s
Conecuh County High Blue Devils ripped Repton’s Bulldogs 52 to 11 Tuesday night
in Castleberry.
Tall Henry Foster
set the pace for the victors with 18 points. Larry Jones tossed in 11, Sims and
Finley had eight each; Kast, four; Glass, two; and Ellis, one.
George Morris led
Repton with five points. Dibella had four and Robinson, two.

Andrew Riley Dies At Football Game: Death came as a tragic aftermath to Saturday’s Alabama-Auburn football game in Birmingham when (Evergreen native) Andrew T. Riley, prominent in Selma’s business and cultural life for many years, collapsed and expired at Legion Field Stadium before he could be removed to a hospital.
Three members of
Coach Wendell Hart’s undefeated 1949 Evergreen High School football team
received the highest honor that can be awarded a high school player when they
were named to the Montgomery Advertiser-Alabama Journal All-State Team. The
team is selected by the votes of high school coaches all over the state and the
sports writers of the two Montgomery dailies.
Evergreen placed two
on the first team and one of the third team. John Greel Ralls, triple threat back,
and Dickey Bozeman, lanky end, were named to the first team. Capt. Jack
Cunningham, outstanding offensive and defensive center, was voted the pivot
post on the third team.
Ralls and Bozeman
received honorable mention on the Birmingham Age-Herald team which was
announced Tuesday.
The first undefeated football team in the history of Evergreen High School will be honored at the Evergreen Quarterback Club’s annual Football Banquet next Tuesday night, Dec. 13. The banquet will be held in the City School lunchroom.
