DEC. 20, 1962

Pine Hill School Principal Resigns: C.W. Self, principal of Pine Hill High School for the past two and one-half years, has resigned, effective Jan. 1, 1963, to accept a position with the State Department of Education in the civil defense department.
W.J. Jones, county superintendent, announced the resignation this week and stated that the position has not been filled.
Mr. Self is from Hanceville in Cullman County, is married and has two children. He and his family will move to Montgomery the first of the year when he will assume his new duties.

Miss Alabama Ball Will Be Held Here Saturday, Dec. 29: “Stars Fell on Alabama” will be the theme of the Miss Alabama Ball honoring Miss Patricia Bonner of Camden, Miss Alabama of 1963, to be held here Sat., Dec. 29.
Miss Alabama and her escort will be introduced for the lead-out at 8:30, followed by American Legion officers, members and visitors.
Those attending will have the opportunity to hear Miss Alabama sing three numbers during the evening.

Sgt. Kennedy Is Promoted In USAF: James R. Kennedy of Camden has been promoted to master sergeant in the United States Air Force.
Sgt. Kennedy, an aircraft maintenance technician, is assigned to the Headquarters Squadron, 4th Tactical Fighter Wing, at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, N.C.
The sergeant, a graduate of Wilcox County High School, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles R. Kennedy of Rt. 2, Camden.

Two Wilcox Towns Export To World: Two towns in Wilcox County were named by State Docks officials as being among 44 Alabama communities which originated exports that passed through the Mobile docks on their way to world markets.
The two towns are Pine Apple and Alberta, and the goods contributed by them for overseas trade consisted of lumber.
Alberta and Pine Apple were listed among towns which had shipped at least one car of goods through the State Docks for export.

Outstanding Tigers: At the annual football banquet of Wilcox County High School, held Thursday night, Dec. 9, the Cooper Motor Company trophy for the outstanding player on Camden’s team was awarded to Johnny Middlebrooks, Tiger halfback. Billie Turner won the Holman Ray trophy for the outstanding lineman. Turner played tackle for Camden this year. The Tiger team presented a special trophy to Coach Connie McKelvey.

Camden-Pine Hill Grads To Meet Again: Football teams made up of graduates of the Pine Hill and Camden high schools will meet again Saturday night, Dec. 18, at Camden.
The first game between the two groups was played on Dec. 3 at Pine Hill, the Pine Hill squad defeating Camden, 19-6.
A number of former football stars of both schools are expected to play in the game here this week.

LOST – One black mare mule, about seven years old, blocky built, with scar on left jaw. If found, notify J.S. Hurst, Furman, Ala.

Camden Theatre This Week: Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, Dec. 16-18, Errol Flynn, Olivia De Havilland In “Captain Blood.”

PINE HIILL: A stereoptical picture of “The Last Week of Christ’s Life on Earth” was given in connection with a lecture at the Baptist Church Wednesday night, Dec. 9, by Mr. Warren of Orrville.

BASKETBALL: Camden boys were victorious Friday night, Dec. 11, over Catherine with a score of 21-16. The Camden girls lost with a score of 15-5.
The lineup for the game was:
BOYS: Center, Harold Morgan; Guard, Laurie Voltz Jones; Guard, Charles Tait; Forward, Larkin Jones; Forward, Kirk Duke; and Manager, George Farish.
GIRLS: Jumping Center, Mary Carter Farish; Running Center, Marylou Lawler; Forward, Ethel Skinner; Forward, Ouida Lambrecht; Guard, Dorothy Dunn; Guard, Jane Henderson; Manager, Sara Harris.
Catherine is scheduled for a return game at Camden Dec. 18, weather permitting.

Arlington: Rev. Herndon, our new pastor, delivered two fine addresses at the Methodist church Sunday morning and evening.

DEC. 20, 1923

PINE HILL GIRLS DEFEAT AGGIES 14 to 7: Pine Hill High School girls played their first game of basketball of the season on the home court, Dec. 14, against Jackson. The Pine Hill team won by a score of 14 to 7. Jackson girls, as well as the Pine Hill sextette, should be congratulated for their good sportsmanship.
Lineup: PINE HILL – Cox, Forward; Vaughan, Forward; Pruitt, Center; Dunn, Center; Sheffield, Guard; Weatherly, Guard.

The December examination of public school teachers was held at the Court House last Monday. Eight stood the examination.

The Grammar School teachers made their pupils very happy Thursday afternoon when they entertained them by having a Christmas tree in each room.

The entrance at the Grammar school has been very much improved by the walls having been done over. The trying red, has been changed to a pleasing cream color.

Coach Melton has organized the boys basketball team for Wilcox County High School, and they will play match games in the near future.

A handsome American Flag was presented the Camden Grammar School by our public-spirited townsman, Mr. B.H. Matthews. This is a very acceptable gift for a school as it assists the teachers in installing patriotism into the minds of the pupils.

DEC. 15, 1910

Mrs. Ella Murphy, wife of Walter Murphy of Pine Hill, is dead, aged 27 years.

On last Sunday morning, one of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Ballard’s twin boys, only a little over two years of age, had his clothing catch fire from the grate and was severely burned. Almost all of his little body was burned, and he only lived a few hours.

We regret to learn of the death last Friday at Snow Hill of Mrs. Edmond Hunter, aged about 75 years. This estimable lady was the mother of Mr. Ed Hunter, Mrs. Arthur Lee, Mrs. W.C. Ingram and Zannie Hunter. Her mother, the venerable Mrs. Hobdy, survives her at the age of 92 years.

Col. W.F. Spurlin is now living with his son, Rev. W.D. Spurlin, and family at Laurel, Miss.

A few snow flakes fell last week. A very cold Christmas is predicted by the weather folks.

Remember the Christmas dance will take place at the Masonic Hall ball room on Tuesday night, 27th inst. The Selma band will discourse sweet music for the light fantastic dancers.

To the members of Camden Lodge No. 35, Knights of Pythias. You are hereby notified that an official visit will be made to the Lodge by Grand Chancellor Frand W. Lull and Grand Keeper of Records & Seals J.M. Dannelly, on next Monday night, Dec. 19. You are urgently requested to attend this meeting. Refreshments will be furnished by the Lodge. – G.T.
