Local weather reporter Harry Ellis reported .55 inches of rain on May 5, 2005. He reported a high temperature of 82 degrees on May 8 and lows of 50 on May 3 and May 6.

Sparta Academy will hold their baccalaureate services this Sun., May 15, at 3 p.m. at the Evergreen Baptist Church. Graduation exercises will be held Fri., May 20, at 7 p.m. in the gymnasium. Members of the Class of 2005 are Samantha Seaman, Toni Johnson, Valedictorian Katie Johnson, Salutatorian Rachel Smith and Andrea Godwin, Katie Wilson, Torey Raines, Blake Stanford, Brandon Pipkin, Preethi Covin, Cody Godwin and Jessica Harden.

In honor of Mr. and Mrs. James B. Franklin on their 50th Wedding Anniversary their children are hosting a reception on Sun., May 22, 2005 from two until four o’clock at the Historic L&N Depot in downtown Evergreen. Mrs. Franklin is the former Lois Holley and they were married May 28, 1955 in Rutledge.

The Weyerhaeuser Co. Foundation recently awarded a $10,000 grant to the Conecuh County Junior High School for the Urban Forestry and Landscaping Program. Presenting the check to Patsy Lazenby, Principal of Conecuh County Junior High School, is Lou Etheredge, Human Resources Manager for Trus Joist. Also pictured is Castleberry Mayor J.B. Jackson.

Evergreen weather observer Earl Windham reported 0.42 inches on May 1 and .06 inches on May 3. He reported a high of 82 degrees on May 1 and a low of 45 on April 28.

Market Hog Show set here Monday: The 15th Annual Conecuh County FFA and 4-H Market Hog Show will be held Monday morning at the show arena of the Conecuh Cooperative Stockyard, North Main Street. The show will begin at 8:30 o’clock. Sale of the show hogs will be held in the auction ring at one o’clock Monday afternoon.
The show is sponsored by the Evergreen Kiwanis Club and the State Dept. of Agriculture & Industries in cooperation with the Dept. of Vocational Agriculture Education Service of Auburn University.
Dalton Campbell is show chairman and Ronnie Shaver is advisory chairman. Official judge will be Dr. John Johndrow, agri-business instructor-trainer specialist at Auburn University. Showmanship will be judged by Phillip Ellis, Evergreen native and Vo-Ag teacher at W.S. Neal High School, East Brewton. Carl Wilson, DVM, will be official veterinarian.
John Bewley will be master of ceremonies. Gerry Watson, Ronnie Shavers and Johnny Andrews will be ringmasters. Weighing and Classification will be in charge of Johnny Andrews, Ronnie Shavers, D.C. Fleming and Marvin Johnson.
Dalton Campbell and David Fuqua are in charge of awards. Sales order of the show hogs will be established by Gerry Watson, Johnny Andrews and Herbert Oakley. Tommy Chapman and Pat Poole head publicity.

Chosen For “Who’s Who In South and Southwest” – It was revealed here this week that R.G. Bozeman Jr. has been selected by Marquis Publications, publishers of “Who’s Who in America” and “Who’s Who in the South and Southwest,” for inclusion in the next biennial edition of “Who’s Who in the South and Southwest,” which will be published next year.
Bozeman, a native of Evergreen, is now publisher of the Dadeville Record at Dadeville, Ala., having bought this newspaper property last July. Prior to that, he was for seven years editor of The Courant, having been named to that post in 1947, when he was only 20 years of age, making him at that time the youngest editor in Alabama. His editorials in The Courant were widely quoted and reproduced.
He was educated at the Evergreen High School and the University of Alabama. He is married to the former Maurice Golson.

SCOUTS REORGANIZED: The Boy Scout troop No. 146 of Repton School has been reorganized. The officers are Carl W. Ryals, scoutmaster; Erskin C. Fountain, asst. scoutmaster; Curtis O. Brown, explorer advisor.
Friday evening, May 6, a meeting was held for the boys and councilmen. Mr. Frank Matthews, district advisor, was present and gave a very instructive talk on scouting. After the meeting, everybody went to George H. Dees’ fish pond and had a wiener roast. After which, the boys, scoutmaster and asst. scoutmaster camped out for the night. The next morning a five-mile hike was enjoyed.

EVERGREEN’S TWO BANKS CONSOLIDATE – Local Institutions To Form One Of The Largest Banks In South Alabama – Resources Over One and One Half Million; Deposits Over One Million: It is no doubt safe to say that never before in the history of Conecuh County has there been a financial, commercial or industrial transaction which in any measure compares to the one consummated here this week when the Peoples Bank of Evergreen and the First National Bank of Evergreen merged to form one mammoth banking institution to be known as the Peoples Bank of Evergreen.
With these banks consolidated, Evergreen will have one of the largest and strongest banking institutions in this section of the state, with more than one and one half million dollars in resources, an aggregate capital, surplus and profits of more than $340,000 and deposits amounting to over one million dollars. The new institution will be large enough and strong enough to take care of any proposition that may arise now or in the future.
The officers and directors of the new institution are: A. Cunningham, President; R.F. Croom, Vice President; A. Cunningham Jr., Vice President; W.D. Brown, Vice President; C.R. Taliaferro, Vice President; J.D. Wright, Cashier; C.T. Ivey, Asst. Cashier; J.G. Lundy Jr., Asst. Cashier. Directors are M.B. Binion, R.F. Croom, A. Cunningham Jr., W.K. Horton, C.A. Jones, R. Millsap Jr., C.R. Taliaferro, W.D. Brown, A. Cunningham, C.P. Deming, B.E. Jones, W.W. Kingsbery, L.T. Rutland and J.D. Wright.
