Coburn wins two Milton races:
J.W. Coburn, driving his Chevy No. 6, won first place in the Blackflag Race and
The Feature at Moto X Pit Dirt Track in Milton, Sunday. His pit crew consisted
of James Coburn of Tuscon, Az. and Jack Gannt.
Darryl Hanks won the Trophy
Dash in his No. 17 and set a track record of 23.00 seconds with J.W. a close
second at 23.50.

Bermuda Nine Defeats Shreve
Eagles 10-5: The Bermuda Bears moves into a three-way tie for first place in
the Conecuh Amateur League by winning their opening game with Shreve 10 to 5
Sunday afternoon. Errors paved the way for Shreve’s downfall.
Allen Till did the hurling
for Bermuda. Shreve tried three hurlers, McIntyre, Lefty Gomillion and Ray
Yancey. There were no outstanding hitters on either team.
Flat Rock Rockets Edge Loree
11 to 10: Third baseman Wheeler King, crossed the plate in the tenth inning to
give the Flat Rock Rockets a 11-10 victory over the Loree Dollies in a Conecuh
Amateur League game Sunday afternoon. The game was played at the Loree Field.
Three ninth-grade students,
King, Roger Peacock and ‘Cotton’ Quinley played a big part in Flat Rock’s win.
King scored the winning run. Peacock accounted for three tallies and Quinley
two. Winston Bailey with three runs and Georgia Brown with two accounted for
the other Rocket scores.
Pitchers Hubert Barlow and
James Barlow worked for Flat Rock. Winston Bailey did the catching. The Loree
battery was not listed in the report to The Courant.
Bermuda and Loree Join
Conecuh Amateur League: The Conecuh Amateur Baseball League membership was
increased to six teams last week with the addition of teams from Bermuda and
Loree. The addition of the two teams is announced by Carroll Smith, league
secretary.
The teams opened a 20-game
schedule Sun., May 13. All games played previously will not be counted in the
final standings. In order to get in the full 20 games there will be some
Saturday games or doubleheaders necessary. All games are to be played on Sunday
afternoon with the exception of those the teams elect to play on Saturday
rather than a doubleheader.
Paul Aces Hammer Centerville
16-2: The Paul Aces turned on the power Sunday as they pounded out a 16 to 2
win over the Centerville Rookies in a Conecuh Amateur League tilt. The game was
played at Paul. Centerville took a short-lived lead as they scored both their
runs in the opening half of the first inning. The Aces scored one in their half
of the inning then shoved six runs across the platter in a second to put the
game away.
Woodrow Robinson started on
the mound for Centerville and was the losing pitcher. He was replaced by J.
Andrews in the fifth inning. Clint Ward was behind the plate for the Rookies.
Harold Godwin hurled all the way for Paul and had the Rookies eating out of his
hand after the first stanza. Joe McClain was the battery mate.
Ed Hooks Runs In Track Meet:
One of Evergreen High School’s favorite athletes, Edward Hooks, participated in
a track meet at Auburn last Saturday. Although he did not place among the first
four winners, he showed excellent form against boys who had been trained for
two years for track.
To qualify for the Saturday
events Edward had to run in two heats Friday. Two participants were chosen from
each of the four events on Friday. “Easy Ed” won the 100-yard heat in 10.7
seconds and placed second in the 200-yard heat by running the distance in 23.1
seconds.
