“Lee Wild tosses no-hitter
for Sparta Warriors: Lee Wild threw a no-hitter for his third straight win as
Sparta Academy defeated Crenshaw Academy, 11-0, April 13 at the Murphy Club
here. Actually, Wild pitched a perfect game as he faced only 15 batters in the
five-inning game, called at the end of the fifth under high school rules.
“Wild gave up only six hits
and struck out 12 batters as the Warriors beat Greenville Academy, 4-3, on
April 5 at the Murphy Club. Sparta got only three hits, but made them count.
“Sparta edged Escambia
Academy, 3-2, on April 8 at the Murphy Club. Wild gave up only five hits and
again struck out 12 hitters. Sparta gathered eight hits.”
From “The Colyum” by Bob
Bozeman – “Happiest fellow I’ve seen in a long time is Dr. Fred West, who
scored every golfer’s dream, a hole-in-one, during the Evergreen Golf Club’s
Invitational Tournament recently. Fred’s ace came on the beautiful No. 8 (pond
hole) and although he eventually lost his match, he was still glowing at the
Spartafest that night.
“Don’t blame him. That’s a
real feat. I’ve been hitting and hunting that little white ball for over 40
years off and on, and I’ve never even seen a hole-in-one, much less had one.
Congrats, Fred!
“Incidentally, Johnny Brown,
now playing out of Mobile, won the championship, defeating Evergreen’s John
Smith on the second hole of a sudden death playoff after they tied in the
regulation 27 holes. I think this was Johnny’s second, maybe third, win of the
local tournament.”

From “The Colyum” by Bob
Bozeman – “The Evergreen Golf Club had a perfect day for its tournament last
Thursday and the event was a success in every way. I didn’t win anything, but
did enjoy playing and getting to see again folks I’ve met over the years at
this and other tournaments. Brown Boykin, chairman, had some good assistance
from others, chiefly Bill Andrews and Roy Pace, and visitors were complimentary
of the manner in which the meet was staged. The Pilot Club served a delicious
lunch to make the day complete.”
“Frank Edge of Niceville,
Fla. won the championship of the Evergreen Golf Club’s annual spring tournament
Thursday, firing a two-over par 110 total. Jimmy Ryan Jr., following in the footsteps
of his father who for years was one of the state’s top amateur golfers, carried
runner-up honors back to Greenville with his 111 total.”
“The second annual Awards
Banquet of the Sparta Academy Quarterback Club will feature an address by Cliff
Harper, assistant commissioner of the Southeastern Conference. The banquet will
be held at 7:30 p.m., May 7, at the Holiday Inn.
“Harper was principal of
Evergreen High School immediately after World War II and left that position to
become executive secretary of the Alabama High School Athletic Association.
Under his leadership, the AHSAA developed into one of the strongest in the
nation recognition and served as chairman of the national rules committee on
several occasions.”

From “As A Man Thinketh” by
R.G. Bozeman – “The best turkey story of the year comes from down Brooklyn way,
but I am not at liberty to divulge the name. The story which came to me was
like this: A hunter down that way, who had already killed this season’s limit of
five gobblers, was fishing one day last week when he flushed a drove of
turkeys. One gobbler, which had evidently been shot and crippled, ran into a
wire fence and got tangled up. Another gobbler went to his rescue and the
nameless hunter ran up and caught both of them. Since he had already killed his
limit, he is going to keep the gobblers up until the hunting season is over and
turn them loose so he can kill them next year. If any of you know a better
turkey story than this one, let me know.”
“Gilbert Wesley of Greenville
holed-out a 50-foot putt on the seventh to close out Tye Adams of Enterprise
and win the championship of the Evergreen Golf Club’s annual invitational
one-day tournament. 103 golfers took part in the meet played over the Evergreen
Course Thursday.”
From “Hi-Lites of E.H.S.” –
“Golf Tournament: Bill Ivey, Paul Pace, Palmer Smith, Billy Grace and Howard
Claybrook represented Evergreen High School in the annual one-day golf
tournament Thursday at the country club. Ivey, playing some fine golf, failed
to qualify for the championship flight, but won consolation in the first
flight.”

“James Q. Taylor, Birmingham,
recently caught a 11-1/2 pound yellow catfish at Mitchell Dam. He went back the
next week and caught from a trot line another ‘cat,’ weighing 36-1/2 pounds. It
took him half an hour to get the latter fish into the boat. In length, from tip
to tail, the fish measured fully half the height of the man.”

“FORMER ALABAMA STAR APPEARS AT ARCADE SOON: Johnny Mack
Brown, well known football star of the University of Alabama of a few years
past, is to appear at the Arcade Theater next Wednesday, April 25, in ‘The Fair
Co-Ed.’ This picture has had splendid reception wherever it has been shown,
especially in Alabama, where Brown is so well known and much admired. It will
be remembered that he is a native of Dothan and achieved an unusual record on
the Alabama football team, later entering the movie field, where he has become
a noted star. This picture will be shown at the regular price 15 and 35 cents.”
“More than 7,000 antlered
deer were killed in the two weeks spent in New York last November, says an
official announcement.”
“LUCKY STRIKE Cigarettes: The
Cream of the Tobacco Crop: Vincent Richards, Champion Tennis Player writes:
‘Immediately before and after my important tennis matches I obtain the greatest
possible comfort and satisfaction from Lucky Strikes.
“A tennis player must guard
his throat carefully, and that is why I smoke only Luckies – they are mild and
mellow, and cannot possibly irritate your throat, and my wind is always in
splendid shape.’ – It’s toasted – No Throat Irritation – No Cough.”
