“Hillcrest High School’s
softball team started its season last week against Escambia County High School
in Atmore”
Members of that year’s team
included Denise McMillian, Shemina Mixon, Armerisha Mixon, Shanika Taylor,
Jasmine Reynolds, Sasha Rankins, Kiara Kyser, Kabrina Peters, T’Kyah Pittman,
Crystal Meeks, Tyler North, Kaylen Thomas, Trishaunna Lee, Keiona Simpson,
Kalisha Stanton, Courtney Simpson, Head Coach Terry Gandy and assistant coaches
Melinda Baxter, Clint Peters and Corey Wallace.
“Hillcrest High School opened
the 2008 baseball season Friday with a double header against Escambia County
High School in Atmore.
“Escambia won the first game,
15-2, and edged out the Jags, 8-1, in the second game of the twin bill.”
Standout players on that
year’s team included Quinton Nettles, Neil Presley, Alexander Nevlous and Marc
Barlow. Brandon Armstrong was head coach.
“Eleven-year-old Jackson
Gorum killed his first turkey on Sunday morning while hunting with his
grandfather, David Gorum. The turkey, which had a 9.5-inch beard, weighed 18
pounds and had one-inch spurs. Jackson shot the gobbler from 12 steps away with
a .20-gauge shotgun loaded with No. 5 shot.”
“Sparta Academy’s baseball
team dropped to 0-3 on the season Monday of last week after an 11-1 loss to
Class 3A Clarke Prep in Grove Hill.”

“Jags bomb Wilcox in baseball
opener: The Hillcrest High School Jaguars opened the 1993 baseball season with
a 19-0 victory over the Jaguars of Wilcox Central High School Monday afternoon
in Evergreen.
“Senior Rhett Wilson pitched
the complete game shutout. Wilson allowed three hits and walked five while
recording 10 strikeouts.
“Isaac McMillan and Sedrick
Fluker led the offensive attack for the Jaguars, each collecting two hits and
combining for seven runs. Mario McDaniel added a three-run home run in the
first inning. It was McDaniel’s first extra-base hit in high school baseball.
“Reggie Boykin paced the
Jaguars on the base paths. Boykin collected five stolen bases, McMillan added
four, Fluker had three and Earnest Grace and Gary Reymundo each had two as the
Jags raised plenty of dust with 18 stolen bases.
“A rematch was scheduled
against Wilcox Wednesday afternoon. The Jags will be on the road next week,
visiting Escambia County High School on Tuesday and Pleasant Home on Wednesday.
The Jags will face Frisco City’s Whippets on March 18 in Evergreen and will
host the first area game of the year on March 19 as the Trojans of Charles
Henderson (Troy) High School visits. The starting time for all home games is
3:30 p.m.”

“David Thomas ends brilliant
career at Jax State U. – David Thomas, six-foot five-inch senior forward from
Evergreen, closed out a brilliant basketball career at Jacksonville State
University by netting 32 points to lead his team to a victory over arch-rival
University of North Alabama at packed Pete Matthews Coliseum. Thomas hit 13 of
15 shots from the floor including two slam dunks and six of nine free throws.
He also pulled in nine rebounds and blocked two shots.
“Thomas, a candidate for
all-conference honors, was the leading scorer for Jax State this season,
averaging 19.2 points per game and was the leading scorer in 14 of 24 games. He
was second in rebounding, averaging over nine per contest.
“Thomas was a star cager at
Evergreen High School, playing under Coach Charles Branum.”
“Sparta hosts ‘Jamboree’
Saturday at 7: Sparta Academy will host a ‘Football Jamboree’ this Saturday night
which will climax spring practice for four area private school football teams.
“The football ‘jamboree’ will
begin at seven o’clock with Fort Dale Academy playing Sparta in the first
quarter. The next quarter South Butler Academy will meet Greenville Academy.
“The final half of the
‘jamboree’ will have the losers of the first two games meeting in the third
quarter and the winners meeting in the final quarter.”
“Gray Stevens soars for a
‘fastbreak layup goal’ which was typical of the play of the Sparta Academy
senior that earned him All-District honors in the Alabama Private Schools
Association this season. Gray, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Stevens, will represent
the Warriors on the South All Star Team in the APSA All Star Games to be played
tomorrow night at Fort Dale Academy in Greenville.”

“Lyeffion Begins Spring
Practice: The Lyeffion Yellow Jackets completed their first week of spring
football practice with 19 candidates remaining on the squad.
“Coach Shirley Frazier says
that spirit and optimism have been very high during the week even though the
Jackets face their toughest schedule in years. The Yellow Jackets will face
Evergreen, McKenzie, Repton, Dozier and Carlowville during the season.
“Much of the success of the
team will depend upon the performance of the six seniors on the squad: Ronnie
Golson, quarter; Allen Cook, who has shifted from end to guard; Larry Hardee,
guard; John Grimes, center; Patton Brown, end; and Harold Wilson; fullback.
“Rounding out a possible starting
line-up are: ninth-grader Harold Brown, end; Keith Holcombe, tackle; Robert
Harper, tackle; Don Garrett, a hard-running 160-pounder and Mickey Fountain, a
120-pound halfback.
“A pleasant surprise has been
the work of Larry Blackmon, a 125-pound linebacker and Mike Burt, an offensive
halfback.
“Jessie Middleton, Paul
Kendrick, Leonard Raines, David Ross, Homer Chavers and Jerry New round out the
squad.
“Seventh-graders who are
working out with the squad are Raymond Macks, John Salter, Wendell Hamrac and
Don Salter.”

“The Evergreen High Aggies
soundly trounced an inferior Fairhope team, 48-20, in the consolation playoff
of the A group of the First District Basketball tourney at Monroeville Saturday
night. The win gave the Aggies third place in the District.
“Evergreen opened the play of
the lower bracket of the ‘A’ group by whipping an undermanned Jackson five,
40-13.
“In the quarterfinals, the
Aggies built up a 20-6 halftime lead and coasted in to beat Robertsdale, 38-28.
“The champion McGill squad
defeated Evergreen with ease in the semifinal contest Saturday afternoon by a
57-26 score.”
“The Lyeffion Yellow Jackets
were eliminated from the First District basketball tournament in their first
game by the ‘B’ championship Frisco City Whippets. The final score of the game
was 50-17 in favor of Frisco.
“McCrory with seven, Dees
with five and Jones with four paced the Lyeffion team in its gallant fight.”
“The Blue Devils of
Castleberry were eliminated in their first game by a fast finishing Damascus
team by a 34-21 count.
“Clark basketed six points to
lead the Blue Devils. ‘Phil’ Dees was held to five points, probably the lowest
total of the season, and Beasley bucketed four counters.”
“Uniforms were issued to
about 20 boys at Evergreen High School Monday afternoon and the first session
of spring practice began immediately following this. Coach Hart expects the
size of the squad to increase to about 30 boys before the end of the week.”
