Meeks
Day is set for Friday night: A reception will be held at Hillcrest High School
Friday night honoring Bob Meeks, a native of Conecuh County, who starred on

Tigers, will join several area officials in praising Meeks for his
accomplishments on and off the field.
The reception, beginning at 6 p.m. and lasting until 8
p.m., will be held in the cafetorium of Hillcrest High School. Mayor Lee Smith

The public is invited to attend. Admission will be
free.
During the day prior to the reception, Meeks will
travel to area schools, delivering messages to “stay in school and stay away
from drugs.”
Mrs.
Janet Cooper, coordinator for the Conecuh County Special Olympics, is pictured
lighting the “Olympic Torch” Monday at Brooks Memorial Stadium during opening
ceremonies of the athletic competition. Athletes from all over the county

Aggies nip Jackson, lose to
Lanier: April 26, Lanier, Away: The Lanier Poets proved to be too much for the
Aggies as they defeated the Aggies, 8-1. For 2-1/3 innings, the game was tight
as Homer Faulkner struck out six of the first eight batters he faced. At that
point, the Poets came to life and dominated the game for the remainder of the
day. In all, the Poets got eight runs on 10 hits and three errors.
Although the Aggies lost, they
never gave up. As late as the fifth inning, the score was only 4-1. Lack of men
on base, mental mistakes and errors handicapped the Aggie effort.
A potential Aggie rally was
cut short in the first inning by a mental mistake. In the fifth inning, the
Aggies got their run when Homer Faulkner got on by an error. He advanced to
third on a single and a sacrifice. Wayne Caylor finally brought him in with a
sacrifice fly. Aggie hits were made by Grover Jackson, Leon Hinson and Homer
Faulkner.
May 3, Jackson, Home: The
Aggies picked up four runs in the first inning and made them stand up for a 4-0
victory over Jackson. Lead off batter Don Montgomery got on first with a single
and advanced to second on an error. Grover Jackson singled to right which
brought Don Montgomery home. The throw from right field was good but the
catcher dropped the ball. Homer Faulkner followed with a home run over the left
field fence that scored Leon Hinson and Grover Jackson.
Jackson had good scoring
opportunities in the first, fifth and sixth innings but were unable to get hits
when they needed them. Grover Jackson ended all of these threats with strike
outs.

Wild
Turkey Eggs Hatched By State: Man lent nature a hand this week when 11 young
wild turkeys were hatched at the Prattmont game farm of the Department of
Conservation’s game, fish and seafood division, from a dozen eggs collected by
a southwest Alabama game warden from an abandoned nest. Last reports were that
the 12 young turkeys were busy at the job of getting out of its shell. Wild
turkeys are among the hardest of birds to raise in captivity. Survivors are
expected to be released in the Fred T. Stimpson game sanctuary at Salt Springs
in Clarke County for propagation purposes.
Quail
Egg Production Ahead Of Last Season: With the first batch of 179 eggs due to
come off this week, quail egg production of the Prattmont game farm of the
Department of Conservation’s game, fish and seafood division is running ahead
of last year’s schedule. The 400 pairs of bobwhite broodstock now have 1,803
eggs in the incubators. Last year, the same number of broodstock laid 1,666
eggs for the same period.
The first egg was laid April 4, the same date as that
on which the initial egg was laid last year. The first collection was made
April 20.
