“Conecuh County native Shirl Johnson is helping to introduce a new era of women’s basketball to hoops fans in northeast Florida.
“Johnson, the daughter of Annie C. Johnson of Belleville and the late George W. Johnson, is the owner of the Jacksonville (Fla.) Cougars, a new expansion team in the semi-professional Women’s Blue Chip Basketball League.”

“Evergreen’s 14- and-15-year-old Babe Ruth all-star team is scheduled to take the field in this year’s district tournament today in Atmore, tournament organizer Murray Johnson of Atmore said.
“Members of this year’s 14- and 15-year-old all-star team are Jeremy Ealum, Terrance Lyons, Tevin Buchanan, Warren Lowery, Trevin Fluker, Stephanie Martin, Jared Dees, Tevin Rudolph, Quenton Simpson and Anthony Steen. Coaches are Earnest Boykin, Michael Bradley, Bryan Boykin and Jackie Gorum.”

“Evergreen’s 11- and 12-year-old Little League all-star team opened tournament play Saturday on the YMCA athletic fields in Brewton.
“The members of Evergreen’s 11- and 12-year-old all-star team are Kristen Booker, Taylor Chavers, LaBarron Dees, Drew Hardin, Jacob Hendrix, Patrick Johnson, Kyantrae Lewis, Quinton North, Trent Pettis, Keyshawn Roache, Ryan Skinner, Allen Stuart and Brandon Taylor. John Skinner is the team’s manager, and Paul Hamby is the team’s coach.”

“Presley-Fluker team 1993 Babe Ruth Champions: The Evergreen Babe Ruth Baseball League ended its 1993 season on June 13th with the Presley-Fluker Baseball Team crowned the 1993 Babe Ruth Champions. The coaches are Earnest Boykin and Wiley Grace.”

“Three youths from Conecuh County brought home the medals from the Alabama Sports Festival held recently. The youths were sponsored by Pat Poole.
“Landra Padgett, daughter of Lyndon Padgett and Linda Padgett of Evergreen, brought home a silver in yellow belt sparring and a bronze in yellow belt forms.
“Roxanne Frazier, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Frazier, brought home a bronze in yellow belt sparring and a bronze in yellow belt forms.
“Jason English, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald English of Evergreen, brought home a bronze in green belt forms and a silver in sparring against Jennifer Dinger, the Alabama black belt finalist. Jason is the only person to score against Jennifer all year, three points out of five.”

“University of Alabama head football coach Gene Stallings will be speaking and signing autographs at the Andalusia High School Auditorium Tues., July 13. He will begin signing autographs at 7 p.m. and will speak on behalf of the Covington County Alumni Association beginning at 8 p.m.
“A highlight film of the Crimson Tide’s 1992, 13-0, season will be shown, including clips from the national championship game against the Miami Hurricanes.”

“Wayne Martin of Evergreen, a graduate of Alabama Christian College, has signed a tennis grant-in-aid to attend Freed-Hardeman College in Henderson, Tenn. this fall. He was the number one seed for his junior college team.
“The junior transfer will join a strong crop of returning lettermen at the college. A perennial power in the Western Division of the Volunteer State Athletic Conference, Freed-Hardeman grabbed the division crown in 1977 and shared it in 1978.
“Martin is the son of Mrs. Allie Martin of Evergreen.”

“A Mini Basketball Camp will be held at the Evergreen High School Gym on July 17 from 1:00 to 5:00.
“The camp will be conducted by Coach Cliff Ellis, head coach at the University of South Alabama. Assisting him will be Coach Charles Branum, head coach of Evergreen High School and staff.”

“J.W. (Grandpappy) Coburn of Evergreen racked up two more wins at the SAMS NASCAR Track in Opp on Sunday afternoon. Coburn won the Heat Race, then took the lead in the first lap and led all the way to win the Hobby Class Main Feature.
“Coburn is a top contender for the season championship and at present is the points leader in Winston/Sundrop Competition in the Hobby Class at Opp.”

JULY 11, 1963

“Sr. League Results: Tigers vs. Pirates: Monday night, the Tigers, trailing 2-1 in the last inning, sneaked in by the back door to down the Pirates 3-2 and hold to their one game margin over the Braves for first place. The Tigers’ record is now 6-1 while the Bucs have a 3-4 slate.
“In the Tigers sixth, Wayne Tolbert led off with a walk, stole second, went to third on an error, and scored on a wild pitch. Bubba Faulkner squeezed in Mike Fields, who was on on an error, with the winning run to end the game.
“The Tigers drew first blood in the first inning with an unearned run. The Pirates scored an unearned tally of their own in the second and then took the lead in the third with Steve Baggett’s lead-off, inside-the-park homer.
“Faulkner and Baggett both went all the way on the mound for their respective clubs.”

“Braves vs. Indians: The Braves blasted the Indians 17-3 Monday night to stay a game behind the league-leading Tigers. The Braves are now 5-2 and the Indians are 0-7.
“A triple by Sammy Brown was the highlight of the Braves’ eight-run first. They added nine more in the third. Brown had four RBIs.
“Grover Jackson, Tommy Hartley and Johnny Brown pitched for the Braves with Jackson taking the win. Loser Knud Nielsen and Bill Snowden were the Indians moundsmen.”

“Scouts of Evergreen Troop 40 won top honors during their week at Camp Euchee last week. They were the top troop in camp site inspection for the week and also won the swimming event at the Gulf Coast Council camp near DeFuniak Springs, Fla.”

“Brewton’s Evergreen Night Attended By Large Crowd: An estimated 400 to 500 persons from Evergreen attended the Brewton-Greenville game at Lyles Park, Brewton Wednesday night. It was Evergreen Night at the Brewton ball park, and Evergreen was really there.
“The Brewton Baseball Club designated this game for Evergreen Night to thank the many fans from this vicinity that attend the games there. Tickets for the game were bought and distributed free in Evergreen by a number of Brewton and Evergreen merchants.
“Evergreen people were a little disappointed in that Brewton lost 4 to 6 to the Greenville Pirates, but came home with a number of prizes given by Brewton merchants.”

“BROOKS STADIUM, July 4 – James Carpenter crossed the plate in the last of the eighth with the winning run as the Greenies defeated Monroeville 10 to 9 in the first half of a scheduled twin bill here Sunday. The game was slated for seven innings, but the Lee Motor Co. nine of Monroeville tied things up with a three-run rally in their half of the seventh to force another inning.
“Wendell Hart started for the locals and was in trouble all the way. ‘Check’ Ellis took over in the eighth and held the visitors scoreless that inning.
“Ottis Johnson led the Greenies at the plate with three bingles, one a two-run homer. Stevens was the visitor’s top stickman with three raps including a two-run round tripper.”
