“Evergreen Aggies Sign-Up: The Evergreen Aggies Tiny Mite and Pee Wee football players will hold sign-up on Sat., July 17, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Evergreen Municipal Park.”

“The Conecuh County Board of Education approved the following issues:
“(Approved the) employment of David Godwin as elementary physical education teacher at Evergreen City School and assistant football coach at Hillcrest High School beginning 1999-2000 school year.”

“Lyeffion QB Club: The Lyeffion Quarterback Club will hold sign-up for Tiny Mite and Pee Wee football at Lyeffion July 19-23 at 6 p.m. Sign-up fee is $20.”

“Hillcrest High School physicals will be given Thurs., July 22, 1999 at 8 a.m. at Dr. Mark Roberts office. Any athlete that will be participating in any sport at Hillcrest should be there at this time. Athletes should contact Coach Hudson at the high school for paperwork.”

“Horse Show: The Circle X Arena will hold their monthly horse show on Sat., July 17, at 6 p.m. There is $300 added money to the open 3-d barrels and kids events are free. Free admission, Coggins will be required, no alcohol, concessions available. Easy rider’s classes available for those who are just learning. Located on Appleton Road.”

“Evergreen Stars win first game in district play” by Tom Jones – “Game 1, Mon., July 9: Evergreen fell behind to Brewton, 4-0, after 1-1/2 innings. Evergreen then came back for four runs to tie the score in the third inning on lead-off double by third baseman, Richard Byrd, who scored on infield single by Mickey Jones. After one out singles by Scott Jones, Ryan Burt, Jamie Shipp, Greg Stanton and fielder’s choice had tied the game, 4 to 4.
“Then after holding Brewton scoreless in the top half of the third inning, Evergreen exploded for six big runs, highlighted by doubles by Jamie Deason, Richard Byrd and closing the outburst, a homerun by pitcher Greg Stanton with one man on base for the last two runs of the inning leaving Evergreen ahead, 10-4.
“Evergreen and Brewton each scored two runs in the fourth inning highlighted by singles for Kevin Townson, Richard Melton and double by Richard Byrd to bring the scored to 12 to 6.
“After Brewton scored two more runs in the fifth one of them on a homerun by the catcher, Evergreen again matched Brewton two runs for the inning and closed the game with ground out to Evergreen pitcher Greg Stanton for the first victory in Little League tournament play. Final score in the game, Evergreen 14, Brewton 9.”

JULY 17, 1969

“All Star games set for Monday: The All Star games of the Evergreen Junior Baseball League will be played Monday at the league park. If rained out, the games will not be played.
“The American League game will be at six o’clock followed by the National League game.”

“These Boy Scouts of Evergreen Troop 40 left Sunday morning for a week’s stay at the Gulf Coast Council’s Camp Uchee near DeFuniak Springs, Fla. Scoutmaster Jimmy Murphy preceded the boys by a day to get things set up for them. He takes a week of his vacation each year to accompany the troop to camp.”

JULY 15, 1954

“City Softball Loop Of 6 Teams Formed; Play Begins Tonight: The City Recreation Department has formed a six team softball league, Director Bill Parsons announced today. Play will open in the league tonight at Brooks Stadium at 7:30 o’clock. Games are scheduled on Tuesday and Thursday nights for the remainder of the summer.
“A practice game between The Spotlight and Evergreen Equipment Co. was held Tuesday night. The game was held to try out the lights and to promote interest in the league. A small crowd of spectators enjoyed a game spotted with spills, brilliant plays and some not so brilliant plays.
“In addition to the two teams just mentioned, the other entries are American Legion, Junior Chamber of Commerce, Evergreen Kiwanis Club and Southern Coach Mfg. Co., Inc. Teams are sponsored by these organizations, but players do not have to be associated with them.
“Doubleheaders will be played every Tuesday and Thursday nights. The first game will start promptly at 7:30 and the second will get underway at 8:30.”

“Greenies And Paul Split Doubleheader: The Evergreen Greenies and the Paul Aces divided a Sunday afternoon doubleheader played on the Paul diamond. The Aces racked up a 6-4 win in the opener, but the Greenies came back in the night cap and registered a 5-3 victory. Both were well played games and seven-inning affairs.
“Paul’s winning battery in the first game was Harold Godwin on the mound and McClain behind the plate. George Gaston was credited with the loss and Clint Ward was behind the plate for Evergreen. Linzie Pate banged out three hits in as many trips to the plate to lead the winners. Warren Bolton with two for four was best for the losers.
“The Greenies got off to an early lead and were in front 2-0 at the end of three innings and 4-3 going into the last frame, but the Aces rallied for three runs and the decision.
“The Greenies broke a 2-2 tie in their half of the last inning with a three-run outburst as they took the game 5 to 3 behind the hurling of J.W. Windham. Ward was behind the plate again. Hassell was the losing pitcher with McClain behind the plate again.
“Clayton and McClain had two hits in four trips for Paul and Jeff Moorer and Windham identical records for the Greenies.”

JULY 20, 1939

“Evergreen Scores Two Shutouts Over Atmore: The Greenie pitching staff turned on the heat last week and burned down the Atmore Oilers with shutout games Thursday and Sunday by the respective scores of 3-0 and 5-0.
“The first no-run game was credited to ‘Pop’ Watson who allowed only two hits in beating the Oilers Thursday in Atmore. Watson had been in a slump for several weeks but seems to have found his stride at last.
“The second shutout was won Sunday in Evergreen by ‘Skin’ Hyde who also allowed a measly two safeties to win his 5-0 victory.
“Evergreen plays Monroeville a double header here Sunday. Game starting at 2:45.
“Evergreen will play Clanton All-Stars here at Gantt Field 3:30 Friday afternoon. Clanton has a real team stopping off here on their way back home after playing Pensacola Naval Station, a three-game series.”

“Mr. May Wins Fishing Trip For Outstanding Record: R.E. May, local District Manager of the Brown-Service Insurance Company, left Tuesday for a several days fishing trip at Bayou La Batre. This fishing trip was awarded to certain District Managers for outstanding accomplishments during the first six months of 1939. The Evergreen office of the Brown-Service Insurance Co. is said to have ranked second in the entire state on increase in number of policy holders for the first six months of 1939, having increased the number of policy holders by over 4,000 for the period.”

“John Watson, Kenneth, Miriam and John T. Watson attended the Evergreen vs. Atmore ball game at Evergreen Sunday afternoon.”
