“After one year and five months of hard work and much prayer, the congregation of the Evergreen Baptist Church will celebrate homecoming this Sunday with the rededication of the newly renovated main sanctuary.
“The church, which was originally built in 1908, has undergone extensive renovations over the past 17 months.
“All the woodwork has been totally cleaned and refinished, including each of the pews. A new balcony was constructed at the rear of the church to hold the audio and lighting controls.
“The Sunday School rooms located in the church were totally renovated and reconstructed. The entire exterior of the church, including the grounds surrounding the sanctuary were renovated and relandscaped.”
“A project started by the previous administration in the Conecuh County Sheriff’s Department has been completed by the present administration. The Conecuh County Sheriff’s Department has received on loan through the United States Government’s 1033 Program a OH58 Bell Jet Ranger helicopter.
“The helicopter will be loaned to the department on a five-year renewable loan assignment through the United States Army. The helicopter was based out of Fort Belvoir, Va. before coming to Conecuh County.
“According to Sheriff Tracy Hawsey, the project was started in February of 1999 by the Sheriff Tom Hall’s administration.”

“The Conecuh Heritage Festival, Nov. 8, sponsored by the Evergreen Chamber of Commerce, has been selected as one of the Top 20 events during the months of October, November and December by the Southeast Tourism Society.”
“On Oct. 7, the House of Delegates of the Alabama Division of the American Cancer Society elected Judge Sue A. Bell to the state Cancer Society’s Board of Directors.”
“Miss Homecoming, Loretta Holcombe, reigned over homecoming festivities Friday at Evergreen High School. Rita Grace was named first alternate and Kelly Whatley, second alternate. They were featured on a float in the homecoming parade Friday afternoon and presented at the game with Luverne that night.”
“Lieutenant Governor Bill Baxley campaigned for governor in Evergreen Friday morning. While here, the Democratic nominee conferred with his county coordinator, Mrs. Marjorie J. Gilmer.”
“BIRTHS: Mr. and Mrs. Terry Peacock (nee Sharon Johnson) of Brewton announce the birth of a daughter, Jamie Marie, on Aug. 21, 1986 at Providence Hospital in Mobile. Proud grandparents are Bill and Phyllis Johnson and Richard and Jane Peacock, all of Evergreen. Great grandparents of Evergreen are Mr. and Mrs. Charles R. Cunningham.”

“The Brooklyn Baptist Church celebrated its 150th year with a sesquicentennial program on Sun. Oct. 10. Approximately 41 pastors have served the church during its 150-year history. For the 500 guests who attended the celebration, the day was a journey back into time. Many of the ladies were dressed in the fashions of the early 1800s.”
“According to Conecuh County Forest Ranger Dwight Taylor, Conecuh has had 70 wildfires this year that burned 811 acres. Eight of these occurred this month.”
“A regular communication of Greening Lodge No. 53, F&AM, will be held Tuesday night at seven o’clock. All Master Masons are urged to attend.”
“U.S. Air Force Major Jerry E. Ikner, son of Mrs. Lottie B. Ikner of Rt. 1, Repton, has received the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary aerial achievement in Southeast Asia.
“Major Ikner distinguished himself as a C123 Provider navigator when he flew an extremely hazardous unarmed night reconnaissance, flare support, and forward air control mission against enemy vehicles.
“Despite personal danger, the major directed air strikes against the targets. His efforts deprived the opposing forces of vital and valuable military equipment and supplies.”

“COPE FLOWER SHOP TO HOLD OPEN HOUSE FRIDAY AND SATURDAY: Shown above is the new building of the Cope Flower Shop. Open house will be held all day Friday and Saturday in the new structure, according to Mrs. Sam Cope. The business formerly occupied a portion of the garage behind Cope Funeral Home.”
“Johnny Hagood Fussell, airman apprentice, USN, age 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gaither Z. Fussell of 109 Factor St., Evergreen, reported aboard the Naval Auxiliary Air Station, Cabaniss Field, Corpus Christi, Texas on Sept. 17, 1956.
“Cabaniss Field is one of the bases in the Naval Air Advanced Training Command used in the training of future carrier attack pilots.”
“The budget for the City of Evergreen for the year 1956-57 was approved as submitted by the Evergreen City Council at its regular meeting Tuesday night.
“The total budget was approved at $213,565, but is anticipated that expenses will not run as high as approved for some departments, based on past experience.
“The total income for the city has been estimated for the coming year at about $208,000.”
“Comby Snowden, popular Evergreen barber and member of the city council, was injured in a head-on automobile wreck here Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. Snowden’s condition has been reported as improved, and he will be taken to Mobile for further treatment on Saturday.”

“At the cooperative hog sale held Tuesday at the pens here 43 head of hogs weighing an aggregate of 8,650 pounds were sold for the sum of $782.52. Number ones brought nine cents with other grades in proportion.”
“L.W. Crocker, who has served this county most efficiently and satisfactorily for the past four years as County Administrative Officer, is leaving Friday for Hayneville, Lowndes County, where he will be engaged in the same type of work.
“Succeeding Mr. Crocker will be Melvin Mashburn, recently of Linden, where he has been engaged in AAA administrative work. He and Mrs. Mashburn will move here to make their home.”
“There will be a CCC enrollment on Oct. 28. Any boy who is interested may apply at the office of Department of Public Welfare on Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday of each week.”
“Miss Frances Deming, who entered the University of Alabama this fall, has been chosen to represent Alpha Gamma Delta sorority in the competition for ‘Sweetheart of Sigma Chi’ at the second annual Sigma Chi derby, Oct. 16.
“Miss Deming graduated from the Evergreen High School in 1940 and entered Mary Baldwin college. She transferred to the University this year and was selected by her sorority from a group of more than 15 girls to enter the derby contest.”
“The 59th annual session of the Conecuh Baptist Association will be held with the church at Brooklyn next Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 21-22. Lloyd Hart is moderator and Rev. Cleve Ellis is clerk of the association.”
