Secretary Shani Meeks invite everyone to come by Joy’s during Business After Hours

“The Evergreen City Council
heard from the Conecuh County Economic Development Authority at their regular
meeting Tuesday night. John Raines, Chairman of the EDA, gave the council a
report on the activities of the past year.
“Raines said they have had a
pretty good year but just wish they had been able to land a Hyundai supplier.
He said that the distance from the main plant in Hope Hull made a logistics
problem. He added that they believe that the industry will grow in the coming
years and Evergreen and Conecuh County could still benefit by landing a
secondary supplier.”

Drive off Knoxville Road. The newest additions will consist of 35 three-bedroom
units which will be furnished with stoves and refrigerators. This will bring
the total units in Crestview Manor to 60, consisting of 51 three-bedroom units
and nine four-bedroom units.”
“The Evergreen City Council

Construction of Atmore, the low bidder, for the construction of a new hangar at

Tuesday night at City Hall.”

“Rain, more rain, records may
fall: ‘Into each life some rain must fall,’ but it is getting ridiculous around
here this year.
“According to Earl Windham, a
total of 12 inches of rain fell in July. This brought the rainfall for the year
up to 63.5 inches through July. This is more than the average rainfall for a
year and there are five months to go.
“Judging by the amount of
rain so far in August, records for annual rainfall in this area may be broken
this year.”
“U.S. Senator Jim Allen
presents a gavel he used to preside over the Senate to Judge of Probate Frank
Salter and John Fleming, chairman of the Conecuh County Commission. The
presentation took place last Thursday morning at a Dutch breakfast for the

answered questions. Senator Allen will have visited every county in Alabama
since the first of the year by the end of this month.”

“Courant Speeds Up: This
week’s news may be a little stale when it reaches you readers, but we hope that
you will forgive us. The Courant is going to press a little early with this
issue in order that we may install a new printing press.
“We are pleased to announce
that we have purchased a new Heidelberg Platen Press. The new press will enable
us to give faster and better printing service than ever before.”
“The Orpheus Club of
Evergreen will begin the celebration of the 50th anniversary of its founding at
a Silver Tea on Sunday afternoon, Aug. 31. The tea will be held at the
Evergreen City School at five o’clock.

organized in 1908 and federated in 1909.”
“Prisoners arrested by county
law enforcers are now incarcerated in the ultra-modern jail atop the
courthouse. Would seem that such sumptuous quarters would attract many new
customers, but not so, according to Sheriff James ‘Shorty’ Brock.
“Business is definitely not
booming at the county’s new ‘hotel.’ In fact, business has fallen off to such
an extent that Tuesday the county had fewer prisoners in the lock-up than at
any time since they moved across the street several months ago.
“Tuesday, Jailer L.D. Barrow
had only 12 prisoners in custody compared to a normal of 25 to 35 lodgers.
“Shorty offers no explanation
for the decrease, but he isn’t kicking and neither are deputies Mancil Pearce
and Bill Kent, because they quickly point out that while the number of
prisoners is decreasing, there is also a similar decrease in the number of
unsolved crimes in the county.”

for a first pilot’s rating on the B-24’s. When he finishes in Reno, he will
