“Greenies Edge Florala Here Sunday 8 To 7: Manager Zell Murphy’s Evergreen Greenies bunched their hits effectively to win a slugging match from Florala here Sunday afternoon in Brooks Stadium. The Greenies constructed an eight to two lead then fought off a strong Florala rally in the eighth inning to win, eight to seven.
J.W. Windham started on the mound for Evergreen and received credit for the win. Edsel Johnson relieved with none out in the eighth and pitched the final two frames. Windham struck out nine batters and Johnson struck out three, retiring the side on strikes after the bases were loaded.
John Greel Ralls’ booming bat paced the Greenies to the win. Ralls opened the second inning with a homer and homered in the fifth with two men on. He had a perfect evening at the plate with three hits in as many trips and knocked in four Greenie runs. No other Greenie hitter got more than one safety.
Florala outhit the locals 12 to nine, but didn’t use their hits as well. Ward with three hits in five attempts including a triple led the hitters. McNeal and Cummings both had two hits. Bartlow was the losing pitcher. He gave up nine hits and struck out eight Greenie batters.
The Greenies do not have a game scheduled for this Sunday Manager Murphy states.

Paul Kardow Takes Over Local Baseball Team: Officials of the local baseball club announced Wednesday morning that a deal had been closed whereby the franchise of the team had been taken over by Paul Kardow, former pitcher with the Cleveland Indians but lately with the Montgomery Bombers. The deal was made effective from Aug. 1, and Mr. Kardow took active charge of the club Wednesday. While no announcement was forthcoming from him, it is presumed that he will manage the club and take turns on the mound as well.
Under terms of the agreement the team is to complete this year’s schedule under the name of Evergreen Greenies. Mr. Kardow has not made any announcement as to his plans for next year. Local fans are very anxious for the club to be kept here and will no doubt endeavor to interest Mr. Kardow in keeping the team in Evergreen next season.

The Greenies proved their fighting spirit on their home lot Monday afternoon by taking the Dothan Browns in tow by the score of seven to six.
