How many of Vardis Fisher's books have YOU had the chance to read?

I saw on the History Channel that yesterday – March 31 – was the birthday of Western novelist Vardis Fisher, who was born on that day in 1895 in Annis, Idaho. I have to admit that I couldn’t honestly say that I’d ever heard of Fisher, but I recognized the titles of many of the books he wrote during his distinguished career. According to the History Channel, Fisher “was one of the most important forces for establishing a uniquely western voice in American literature.”

Fisher’s first novel was 1928’s “Toilers of the Hills,” but his best known novel is arguably “Children of God,” which won the Harper Prize in Fiction in 1939. Other well known books of Fisher’s include 1958’s “Tale of Valor,” which is about the Lewis & Clark expedition as is his well known nonfiction book, “Murder or Suicide?” His final novel, “Mountain Men,” was published in 1965.

Even if you haven’t read “Mountain Men,” many of you may be familiar with it because it was partially the basis for the 1972 movie, “Jeremiah Johnson.” That movie was directed by Sydney Pollack and starred Robert Redford in the lead role. In addition to Fisher’s “Mountain Men,” that movie is said to have also been partially based on Robert Bunker’s book, “Crow Killer: The Saga of Liver-Eating Johnson.”

Tonight, I present to you a complete list of Fisher’s books. By my count, he published 33 books, and most of them were Western novels.
