Evergreen weather observer Harry Ellis reported 1.59 inches
of rain on July 28, 0.32 inches on July 29, 1.42 inches on July 30, 0.57 inches
on July 31, 0.37 inches on Aug. 1 and 0.90 inches on Aug. 2. He reported a high
of 91 degrees on July 27 and lows of 69 degrees on July 27 and July 29. Total
rainfall for the month of July 2009 was 7.91 inches.
The Conecuh County Commission announced Friday that the
county’s roads ranked among the state’s best and patted the county engineer on
the back for a job well done.
During a commission meeting Friday morning in Evergreen,
Commission Chairman Jerold Dean reported that the Alabama Department of
Transportation gave Conecuh County roads an average grade of 89.38. Of the 67
counties in Alabama, Conecuh ranked No. 15, putting them in the top ten percent
when it comes to the quality of public roads.
Lightning struck a house in Evergreen last Thursday, but a
quick response from Evergreen firefighters kept the resulting fire from
spreading throughout the house.
Last Thursday around 12:58 p.m., 14 Evergreen firefighters
responded to a reported house fire at 601 Wild Ave. in Evergreen. Firefighters
took two engines and a service truck to the house, where witnesses told them
that the house had been struck by lightning, Evergreen Fire Chief Ricky Nobles
said.

Padgett, Sims and Claiborne elected Tuesday in Evergreen:
Evergreen will have an almost new city governing body come Oct. 1, the “old”
being veteran Councilman Aubrey D. Padgett who staged a come-from-behind
victory Tuesday.
Padgett, who is also currently mayor pro-tem, defeated Jimmy
Johnson 109 to 69 to win his third term on the city council.
John E. Smith, the only other incumbent involved in
Tuesday’s voting was defeated by T.L. Sims in District 3.
John “Fat” Claiborne pulled the upset of the day when he
defeated front-runner Patrician L. Dailey in District 5 with a vote of 169 to
140.
Pat Poole, 29, defeated incumbent Mayor Lee Smith and W.B.
Epperson on July 10 to win the office of Mayor.
The make-up of the city governing body come Oct. 1 will be
Poole as mayor, and members of the city council: District 1, Padgett; District
2, Jones B. Sasser; District 3, Sims; District 4, Larry Fluker; and District 5,
Claiborne.
Evergreen weather observer Earl Windham reported 0.14 inches
of rain on July 27. He reported a high of 93 degrees on July 28 and a low of 67
on July 26.
Lawrence Ryals came from behind to win an overwhelming
victory in the race for mayor of Castleberry on Tuesday. Ryals had 230 votes to
defeat Billy Wayne Godwin who had 100.
Castleberry’s governing body come Oct. 1 will be composed of
Ryals as mayor and city council as follows: Place 1, Bill Seales; Place 2,
Phelan Findley; Place 3, Mitt Sullivan; Place 4, Larry Bethune; and Place 5,
Bill Moncrease.

The Evergreen Public Library has ordered a copy of the much
discussed book “Stars Fell On Alabama” written by Dr. Carl Carmer, formerly
connected with the University of Alabama. The book will be available within the
next few days.
Dr. R.W. Hendrix Opens Office Here: Dr. R.W. Hendrix, a
native of Tuscaloosa, opened an office in the Ford building Wednesday and will
practice medicine in Evergreen and surrounding territory.
Dr. Hendrix, who is the husband of Mrs. Helen J. Hendrix,
teacher of piano in the city school for the last three years, obtained his M.D.
degree from the Tulane School of Medicine and served his internship at the
Baptist hospital in New Orleans. Previously, he had graduated from Starke’s
University school and obtained a bachelor of arts degree from Washington &
Lee University. He is a member of Lambda Chi Alpha and Phi Chi fraternities.
Mrs. Hendrix, who is the daughter of Dr. P.V. Speir of
Greenville, expects to resume her classes here when school opens next fall.
Paving Near End: Greenville, Ala. – The eight-mile paving
project leading west from Greenville towards Pine Apple will be completed by
early Fall, according to information given out in Greenville.
The project is a link of the Brandon Highway, leading
towards Mississippi across the Lee Long Bridge near Kathrine.
The eight-mile project on Highway No. 31 at McKenzie is also
progressing well and it will be completed before the Winter sets in.

Riley Brings First Open Cotton Boll: The cotton-picking
season is here!
Alvin Riley, a good farmer of Pine Orchard came into the
office of The Courant Saturday morning with the first open cotton boll of the
1959 season.
The acreage where the discovery was made is located at the
north end of the county, near the Dr. W.A. Stacey plantation.
Lightning Bolt Sets Fire To Mason Home: At six o’clock
Saturday evening a fire, started by lightning going down a wire, caused damage
to a house owned by Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Mason, Highway 31 North, seven miles from
Evergreen in the King community.
The house is one of the older houses of Conecuh County,
about 100 years old, built by the Aaron family. The house has heart pine floors
and when ignited burned quickly.
Col. Pritchett Is Executive Officer: Lt. Col. Claud S.
Pritchett, a former resident of Evergreen and a graduate of Evergreen High
School and Auburn, is the executive officer of the 395th Medical
Convalescent Center. The unit is in training at Indiantown Gap Military
Reservation, Annville, Pa.
The Reserve Medical Unit is from Washington, D.C. and during
this encampment Lt. Col. Pritchett also served as Nutrition Officer of the 805th
Hospital Center, parent organization of the 395th and was
responsible for all the messes serving six reserve units under the 805th
jurisdiction.

Attention Conecuh Guards: You are hereby commanded to
assemble at the armory Mon., Aug. 18, at 7:30 o’clock p.m. for the purpose of
electing non-commissioned officers for the ensuing year, and for regular
monthly meeting and drill. By command of M.A. GANTT, Captain, Co. K, 1st
Regiment, Alabama State Troops; R.L. WATKINS, Acting First Sergeant.
NOTICE: There have been reported to me four white children
residing in Conecuh County as being fatherless and their mother’s unable to
support them. It is my duty under the law, when such children are reported to
me, to have them apprenticed when I can find suitable homes and masters for
them. If anyone seeing this notice should like to provide one of these little
ones with a home, please apply to me at once. There is one girl about 10 years
old, one about six, a boy about three years old and an infant about two months
old. – P.C. Walker, Probate Judge.
Hon. H.A. Herbert, our popular congressman, gave his friends
a short call last Saturday night. Col. Herbert was returning from Repton, where
he had addressed fellow citizens on the political issues of the day.
John Morrill, better known as “Red Horns,” has been elected
constable in the city of Montgomery.
Robt. Rabb, formerly of this place, is on a visit to his old
home. He is accompanied by Mr. W.H. Adams, Pine Apple.
