Clay-Chalkville falls to No. 4 in final ASWA high school football poll

The Alabama Sports Writers Association put out the final prep football poll of the regular season Wednesday of last week, and it was interesting to see how writers voted in regard to Clay-Chalkville High School.

Clay-Chalkville was the No. 1-ranked team in Class 6A until the state high school athletic association stripped them of nine wins due to the use of an ineligible player.

When the poll came out last week, Clay-Chalkville had dropped to No. 4 in the state behind Mountain Brook, Hoover and Daphne. Twelve of the 31 voters voted Clay-Chalkville No. 1, and six voted them No. 2 in the state. One writer voted them No. 3, and two voted them No. 5, and one voter voted them No. 6. Nine voters didn’t vote for them at all.

The second round of the state football playoffs is set for tomorrow (Friday) night and a number of teams from this part of the state are still in the running for a state title.

In Class 1A, Linden (10-1) will play at Pleasant Home (8-3), and in 5A Vigor (9-2) will play at Greenville (11-0). In the AISA, Bessemer Academy will play at Monroe Academy.

Greenville is one of a number of undefeated teams left in the state playoffs. Unbeaten teams left include Maplesville and Ragland in 1A; Elba, Fyffe and Tanner in 2A; Handley, Bayside Academy and Piedmont in 3A; Dadeville, Bibb County, Jackson and North Jackson in 4A; Greenville, Hueytown and Hartselle in 5A; Mountain Brook and Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa in 6A. Edgewood Academy and Crenshaw Christian are the only two unbeaten teams left in the AISA.

If you’re looking for a good sports-related book to read this week, you might want to check out “Three and Out: Rich Rodriguez and the Michigan Wolverines in the Crucible of College Football” by John U. Bacon.

Released on Oct. 25, this book showed up as the No. 7 book on this week’s Publishers Weekly nonfiction best-sellers list.

The book details how Rodriguez, one of the nation’s best coaches, took over the Michigan program and went on to post three of the worst seasons in the history of the program and in his coaching career. Rodriguez, who led West Virginia to its first ever No. 1 ranking, gave Bacon an all-access pass to Michigan’s football program to allow him to research “Three and Out.”
