Just the other day, I got the chance to sample a bottle of a fine and relatively new beer, Guinness Black Lager.
As you might have guessed from its name, this tasty beer is a dark lager that’s marketed under the world famous, Guinness & Co. brand name. It’s manufactured by Diageo, a major producer of beer with its global company headquarters in London.
Guinness Black Lager was launched nationwide in the U.S. in September after trial runs in Australia and certain parts of the U.S. I first saw six packs of it on shelves locally, here in Alabama, a few weeks ago.
“The Guinness Master Brewers have used the finest lager hops, yeast and traditional cold brewing methods, with their signature roasted barley, to create a truly original black lager with a deliciously distinctive flavor,” a press release from Guinness said.
Guinness Black Lager is sold in 11.2-ounce bottles and contains 4-/12 percent alcohol by volume. Each bottle contains about 135 calories.
"With Guinness Black Lager we really wanted to build on all the elements that people love about Guinness,” Guinness Master Brewer Fergal Murray said. “We take immense pride in the quality of our product and ensured that we built on the Guinness legacy when creating this distinctive and refreshing lager. I have no doubt that Guinness and lager fans alike will enjoy this unique tasting new lager.”
I read somewhere that the launch of Guinness Black Lager is part of an effort by Guinness to open up new streams of revenue and boost overall sales worldwide. From the design of the bottle to the taste of the beer, Guinness Black Lager is designed to appeal to young male drinkers, who would rather drink chilled bottled beer.
"The U.S. beer market is evolving and we believe this is the right time to introduce a lager to meet consumers' needs," Doug Campbell, Brand Director at Guinness said. "Guinness Black Lager will appeal to a range of drinkers; those who want a refreshing tasting beer with real character, and our loyal Guinness consumers, who want a variety of unique experiences from Guinness and a refreshing taste profile for certain occasions."
Guinness & Co. is an Irish company, and they’ve been brewing beer at the St. James’s Gate Brewery in Dublin since 1759. Over 10 million glasses of Guinness are enjoyed each day worldwide and is available in over 100 counties.
Their most popular brands are Guinness Extra Stout, Draught Guinness and Foreign Extra Stout. My personal favorite is the Extra Stout, but I’m not a fan of the Draught at all. It has a milky aftertaste that I don’t like.
