“Adrian Woods accepts a two-year basketball scholarship from Jefferson Davis State Junior College, Brewton, as his proud mother, Mrs. Willis G. Woods, sits beside him. Equally proud of Adrian’s achievement are Lyeffion High School Coach Ronnie Williams and Asst. Coach Ed Johnson. Coach Williams said that during Adrian’s two years as a starter for the Yellow Jackets, the team compiled a record of 39 wins and only 11 losses. Adrian’s own statistics were most impressive – 27 points and 14 rebounds per game average and his season-high scoring performance was 37 points, indicating his consistency.”

“The Sparta Academy Warriors lost two baseball games last week, one close and the other a ‘rout.’ Coach Bo Owens’ club is suffering from miscues on defense, according to Sports Information Director Byron Warren Jr.
“The Warriors lost to South Butler by a 9-7 score. Jerry Peacock pitched well as he gave up only four hits, but was the victim of his teammates’ six costly errors.
“Peacock led the eight-hit Sparta attack with three safeties and one RBI. Jeff Johnson had two hits and two RBIs, Tommy Hutcheson two hits and one RBI and Ronny McKenzie lashed out a double with the bases loaded to drive in three runs.
“Greenville Academy jumped all over Sparta and pounded out a 13-3 win highlighted by their big eight-run explosion in the second inning. Jeff Johnson was the losing pitcher.”

“The Evergreen High Aggies ended their Spring football practice with two scrimmage sessions this week.
“Monday Coach Robinson divided his troops into groups and held a control scrimmage. The Green team led by quarterback Scott Cook defeated the Whites, 8-0. Cook passed to end Johnny Huggins for the TD.
“Coaches Robinson and Allman named tackle Alvin Dees, linebacker ‘Snuffy’ Smith and Cook as outstanding for the winners. Jimmy Warren and Kenny Harper were White standouts.
“Tuesday the two teams went at it again with the Whites showing a powerful offense and topping the Greens, 20-0. Jimmy Warren, Brent Thornley and Wayne Tolbert ripped through the Greens at will for huge chunks of yardage. Kenny Harper and Tommy Hartley led the White linemen.
“Scott Cook, Alvin Dees and Calvin Smith were outstanding for the Greens.
“Aggie Coaches John Law Robinson and Henry Allman were well pleased with the training session. They said that they felt like their first unit was pretty well set, but that depth would be a big problem. One bright light of the practice was the performance of Ronnie Hayes. Hayes tips the scales at over 200 pounds and although he is a senior and this is only his first year out, he has shown a lot of desire.”

“The Evergreen Aggies led by the no-hit pitching of Homer Faulkner and Steve Baggett won their first game of the season from the Castleberry Blue Devils 8-0 Tuesday afternoon at the Evergreen Recreation Center field.”

“Plans Set For Third Annual Golf Tourney: Final plans were set this week for the Evergreen Golf Club’s Third Annual Golf Tournament, and a record field of top flight golfers is expected to tee off at the Evergreen Country Club course next Thursday morning at nine.
“Invitations to the tourney, which has developed into one of South Alabama’s top golf events, were mailed last week and entries were being received at a steady rate this week. Golfers from all over the state have made known their intention of taking home the championship cup. Gilbert Wesley of Greenville is the defending champ.
“Lunch and refreshments will be served to all the players, and this courtesy is included in the $5 entry fee. A large number of local golfers plan to enter the tourney and many spectators are expected at the colorful affair.”

“Dr. Joe Hagood and C.T. Ivey carried their sons, Joseph and Johnny Hagood and Bill Ivey to Montgomery Monday to see the Cincinnati Reds play an exhibition game with the Montgomery Rebels.”

From “The Week’s Wash” by Bob Bozeman – “Some folks go turkey hunting and kill turkeys, but when Evergreen hunters go after the prize game bird of Alabama there’s absolutely no telling what they’ll bring back. As evidence of this I offer the bobcat that Aren Bolton brought home Monday.
“Aren tells me that he was attempting to call up a turkey when he noticed the ‘cat’ sneaking through the woods.”

From “Rabb News” by King A. Cole - “The baseball game that was to have been played here between Herbert and Rabb last Saturday was a failure due to the non-arrival of the opposing team. When and where Rabb will play soon will be announced as soon as possible.”

“FUZZY PERRY WINS: MIAMI – Farwell ‘Fuzzy’ Perry, son of John H. Perry, New York publisher is 13 years old and weighs 80 pounds. He went fishing here and hooked a 40-pound Barracuda. Fuzzy landed him alone and won his stripes to stand in the ranks of real Isaac Waltons.”

“The Rabbit Comes Up Smiling: ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – ‘Rabbit’ Maranville, 43-year-old baseball infield spark plug of the Boston N.L. Braves, whose suffered multiple break of the left leg shocked and grieved the entire baseball world, comes up smiling and declares that he ‘will come back again as he has before.’”

“Greek God to Co-Eds: PHILADELPHIA – Robert Freeman of Washington, D.C. is 6 ft. 4 in. tall. He is captain-elect and basketball champion at the University of Pennsylvania. So what was more natural than that the fair co-eds, in a voting contest conducted by the college paper should crown him the ‘Greek God’ of the campus.”
