“Don Siegelman, candidate for Lieutenant Governor of the State of Alabama stopped in Conecuh County last week on his campaign trail. He is shown with Courant staffer Kevin Sullivan who will be voting in his first statewide election in 1994. Siegelman asked Kevin for his vote and support in the election.”
“Winners in the Miss Jag Den 1994 Contest held in the Cafetorium at Hillcrest High School were Brandy Hart, first runner-up; Ruby Lett, Miss Jags Den 1994; and Amanda Chavers, second runner-up. Twenty-four young ladies competed in this year’s contest.”
“Jeff T. Brock of Evergreen has announced that he has qualified and will be a candidate for the position of District Court Judge of Conecuh County, Alabama. Brock will seek the Democratic nomination in the June 7 primary.”
“J. Michael Johnson, a five-year resident of the Herbert community, is seeking the Office of Coroner in the upcoming Democratic Primary in Conecuh County.”
“James Powell of Evergreen is seeking the office of Sheriff of Conecuh County in the upcoming Democratic Primary Election.”
“State Representative J.E. (Jimmy) Warren of Castleberry qualified to seek re-election to the Alabama House of Representatives.”

“According to all of the old songs and stories, there will always be April showers, and this April started off in keeping with that ancient theme as Earl Windham reports some rainfall on four of the first eight days of the month, although there were only traces of rain on two days. However, one 24-hour period (Ole Earl measures from 7 a.m. to 7 a.m.), brought a ‘frog-strangler.’
“Windham reports .4 of an inch on April 3, 4.05 inches on April 4, .09 on April 5 and .03 on April 8.”
“Colonel Fred B. Raines, U.S. Army, was released from his assignment as Special Assistant for National Security Council Affairs, Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, on March 28. He is now making preparations for his new assignment as U.S. Army Attache to the nation of Israel in August of this year.
“Col. Raines is the son of Mrs. Ernestine Raines, who resides on Rt. E, Evergreen, and he has many relatives and friends in this area.”
“’Off they go’ not into the ‘wild blue yonder’ but aboard one of two chartered buses to Mobile. ‘They’ are members of the local Alabama National Guard Unit and they did get airborne after arriving in Mobile. The local unit left early Saturday morning for Mobile where they boarded an airplane and flew to Charleston, S.C. and then on to Germany for two weeks. An high attendance for ‘summer camp’ for the local unit, 54 Guardsmen, made the trip.”

“Major Lee F. Smith, commander of the Evergreen Composite Squadron, Civil Air Patrol, was one of several Air Force and C.A.P. officers who recently served as observers at a search and rescue exercise held by the Puerto Rico Wing, Civil Air Patrol.
“The group left from Birmingham on March 19 and were transported by the Air Force to Holmstead AFB, Florida, then to San Juan, Puerto Rico. In San Juan, the group was billeted at the Americana Hotel.
“On the afternoon of March 21, the officers were flown to St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands to observe search and rescue exercises there.”
“TELEPHONES FOR BROOKLYN: Mrs. Mabel Amos, Gov. Wallace’s corresponding secretary called The Courant at 4 p.m. Wednesday with this word: Ed Pepper, associate member of the Alabama Public Service Commission called Mabel and told her he just signed the contract with Southern Bell Telephone Co. for service to Brooklyn area out of the Evergreen Exchange.”
“Lovely brunette and beautiful Susan Blair radiated happiness as she greets her public after being crowned the 1964 Miss Evergreen Friday night. Sallie Oswald was named first alternate and Julie Blair, Susan’s younger sister, selected second alternate.”
“Miss Zilda Kendall is in Mexico City, where she will do practice teaching in The American School Foundation for eight weeks. Miss Kendall is a senior in the School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Alabama.”

“Special Easter services of worship are being arranged by the churches of Evergreen. The day will begin with Easter Sunrise Services in Brooks Stadium beginning at 5:15 a.m. The church bell will be run 15 minutes before five as a reminder.”
“Al Hansen, popular local grocer, has been elected the first president of the Evergreen Kiwanis Club, which was recently organized. Other officers elected to serve with Hansen are Vice-Presidents Percy Brantley and Ray Canterbury, Secretary Claude Dudley Livingston and Treasurer Raymond DaLee.
“Members of the seven-man board of directors are M.B. (Mack) Binion, George Huey, Willie Cook, Clarence Miller, Bill Cargill, Howard Dees and Terrell Bell.”
“Mayor J.H. Robison announced Wednesday that the Evergreen City Council had accepted the resignation of Chief of Police Robert Z. Wells. The resignation is to be effective May 1. Mr. Wells resigned to enter private business.”
“John Brooks of Owassa community reports to The Courant that he captured a pigeon Monday that had a steel band around its left leg and a rubber band around the right. Both bands were numbered.
“John says that the steel band had the number 137 IF 48 DIX impressed upon it while the rubber band bears the number 016 Z. He plans to keep the bird for several days in case any inquiry should be made.”

“James Thomas Amos Dies Suddenly Sunday: James Thomas Amos, age 78, died suddenly at his home here Sunday afternoon at 2:30 from heart ailment, casting a pall of sadness and gloom over the entire city and county where he had scores of friends.
“Mr. Amos was born in Merriweather County, Ga., Oct. 17, 1855. He came to Evergreen in November 1880 as section foreman on the L&N, which position he held until promoted to the position of supervisor March 1, 1891.
“For a long number of years, Mr. Amos had been a faithful member of the local Masonic lodge and he served many years as Worshipful Master of that organization. He took an active interest in the activities of that fraternity and was recognized as one of the best informed Masons in this locality.”
“Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:30 with Dr. J.G. Dickinson officiating. Services were conducted by the Masonic order with interment at Magnolia Cemetery.”
“Atty. G.O. Dickey spent the first of this week in Monroeville, where he was engaged as defense attorney in several court cases.”
“Judge Leon McCord of Montgomery, candidate for Governor, spoke at the courthouse Wednesday morning beginning at 10 o’clock. He was introduced by Edwin C. Page Jr., his campaign manager for this county, He spoke to a crowd which approximately three fourths filled the courthouse and a small number outside about the loud speaker.”
