APRIL 3, 2003

“Walter Woodrow Overbey Jr., 67, of Bay Minette passed away Tuesday, March 25, 2003 in a Mobile hospital. He was born in Johnstonville in Conecuh County. Mr. Overbey was a deputy B-13 with the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Department retiring after 22 years of service. He began his career in law enforcement as an Alabama State Trooper. He was a nuclear weapons specialist serving with the U.S. Air Force. He was a founding member of the North Baldwin Sheriff’s Search and Rescue for 33 years, member of Pine Grove Baptist Church, member of Fraternal Order of Police, member of Dean Masonic Lodge, No. 112, F&AM and Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter No. 470, Brooklyn, Ala.”

“Weatherman Harry Ellis reports the following highs and lows, as well as the rainfall, for the week listed below. Total rainfall for the month of March was 4.16 inches.”

“Sgt. Orlanda ‘Bear’ Fair, Headquarters 52D Ordnance Group (EOD), Ft. McPherson, Ga. has been deployed to Kuwait to an undisclosed location.
“He graduated from Evergreen High School in 1993 and joined the United States Army. He is the son of Diane and Willie J. Fair, both of Evergreen. He has one daughter, Ayctivia D. Palmer.”

“Oland Robinson Sr., 78, of Eight Mile passed away Wed., March 26, 2003 in a Mobile hospital. He was born Nov. 8, 1924 in Conecuh County. Mr. Robinson served in the Navy during WWII as a Machinist Mate 2nd Class.”

“Weatherman Earl Windham reports .55 inch of rain on April 2nd.”

“Incumbent District Judge Sue A. Bell has qualified as a candidate for the Democratic nomination of Conecuh County, the position which she now occupies.”

“Mrs. Inez Lovitt Reeser, 77, of 108 Williams Ave., Evergreen, died unexpectantly at her home on Wed., March 30. A retired businesswoman and longtime resident of Evergreen, she owned and operated the City Café for a number of years. She was a well known and popular resident and her sudden death was a shock to the community.”

“Winston Pierce, Sanitation Dept. supervisor, is presented a plaque in recognition of his over 40 years service with the City at a retirement party March 31. Pierce attended Evergreen High School before entering the Army for World War II service. He served with the 3rd Infantry Division in combat in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and Germany. He was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action, the Purple Heart, a Presidential Citation with Oak Leaf Cluster, French deGuerre Combat Infantry Badge and E.T.O. Ribbon with eight battle stars. He is the youngest son of the late Ernest and Lula Pierce and is married to the former Gertrude Perdue.”

“John Crum Sessions, a 20-year-old FFA member from the Evergreen FFA Chapter in Conecuh County, is Alabama’s Future Farmer of the Year for 1972, it has been announced by H.W. Green, State FFA Advisor and Supervisor of Agribusiness Education.”

“The Evergreen City Council approved four building permits at its meeting Tuesday night.
“Billy Joe McNeil received a permit to construct a residence on Canterbury Drive. Mrs. Kathleen Miller received a permit to add a utility room and put a roof over a mobile home on Pecan Street. Thomas Hall got a permit to add a utility building to his residence on Hwy. 83. Harlan Hodge got a permit to add a utility room to his residence on Lee Street.”

“Mayor Coy L. Harper signs a proclamation proclaiming April as Cancer Month. Looking on are volunteer workers, in the annual Cancer Crusade: Cecil Caylor, Mrs. Ray Owens, chairman, Mrs. Dan Brown and Mrs. B.I. Perryman. All citizens are urged to participate in this worth cause through your business, residential area, industry or school. The residential area of Evergreen will be canvassed April 9-13.”

“George Alan Rigby is spending his 30-day leave here with his wife and baby and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. McNeil Rigby, before leaving for his new assignment in the Panama Canal Zone.”

“Vicki Pope won first place in the County Beef Cook-Off held here recently under sponsorship of the Conecuh County CowBelles. Susan Johnston won second place, and Rachel Ellis finished third.”

APRIL 3, 1958

“KILLS MONSTER RATTLER: E.D. Calloway, good citizen of Castleberry who works with the L&N Railroad Co., over near Geneva, was in Evergreen Saturday showing a stuffed specimen of a monster rattler which he killed while on the job one day last week. The snake measured 5-1/2 feet in length. Mr. Hodge said a campaign was waged by the citizens over near Geneva recently and a large number of rattlers were forced out of gopher holes and like dens to be killed.”

From “This Week’s Wash” by Bob Bozeman – “This newspaper does not publish poetry, but each year along about this time I have an uncontrollable urge to publish my favorite bit of verse. It was uttered by Denny Dimwit in the funny papers some years ago, and here ‘tis.

“As you can see, classics like that cannot be allowed to die, but must be brought to the public’s attention each year.”

“Gillis Morgan, student at the University of Alabama, arrived Wednesday and will spend the Spring holidays at home.”

“A special election to determine if the county’s special three-mill levy for schools shall be renewed for 20 years has been called by the Conecuh County Board of Directors. The election will be held at the same time the Democratic Primary is conducted on May 6.”

“O.E.S.: The regular meeting of the Eastern Star will be held Mon., April 5, at 8 p.m. All members are urged to attend.”

“Nick Burousas left Carter’s Hospital in Repton Friday, where he underwent a major operation. His many friends will be glad to know that he is recovering with unusual rapidity.”

“W.I. Cook of Lyeffion community put out 85 more acres of kudzu last week. Mr. Cook has 35 acres of kudzu two years old. This makes him a total of 120 acres of kudzu on his farm.”

“Miss Anna Deal Cole, missionary to China for 32 years, will hold two services Sun, April 11, at the Pentecostal Holiness Church of Brownville. At 11 a.m., Miss Cole will show her miniature Gospel Boat, and other curios, and at 7:30 p.m., she will tell of the cruelty of the Japanese soldiers, pointing out by pictures on the screen, real experiences and adventures.”

“Announcement was made this week that Rev. Earl W. Powell, assistant pastor of the First Baptist Church of Montgomery, has accepted the call to become pastor of the First Baptist Church here. Rev. Powell, a native of Roanoke, Va., was formerly pastor of the First Baptist Church at Portsmouth, Va. He has been with the Montgomery Church for the past year.”
