“Evergreen Rugby” by Jim Andrews – “Led by the hustle of Darwin Cook and the place kicking of Stanley Johnson, the Evergreen Rugby Team bounced back from a first-round loss to win a ‘Sevens’ Rugby Tournament at the University of West Florida last Sunday.
“After losing 3-0 to Pensacola Naval Air Station in the first round, Evergreen was forced into the ‘losers’ bracket. Therefore, to win the tournament, they had to win the next three games in a row. They did just that, beating Panama City, 12-6, Pensacola Navy, 12-6, and the University of West Florida, 9-0.
“Each of Evergreen’s players had a tremendous afternoon and it was a team effort that brought them the tournament championship. Joe Andrews, Walker Scott, James Holland, Homer Holland, Jim Andrews, Stanley Johnson and Darwin Cook all played well and ‘kept the pressure up’ against the opposition all afternoon.
“Evergreen will play again on June 19 in Montgomery in another tournament.”

“Sparta QB Club elect officers: The Sparta Academy Quarterback Club elected new officers for the coming year at its meeting last Thursday night. Eugene Hyde was elected president, John Driver Jr., vice president, Roger Waller, secretary, and Joe Morrison, treasurer.”

“Coburn second at Flomaton: J.W. Coburn of Evergreen finished second Saturday night in the main feature race at the Flomaton Speedway.”

“A color film of the 1962 Senior Bowl will be shown Friday night.
“Coach Shirley Frazier urges everyone, young and old, to come out each Friday night and enjoy the friendly fellowship.”

“EVERGREEN SENIOR LEAGUE” by Malcolm Craft – “Indians vs. Tigers: The Tigers, after falling behind 4-0 in the first inning, came back with a five-run third inning which was flanked on either side by three-run outbursts to take an 11-5 decision from the hapless Indians.
“Bubba Faulkner started for the Tigers but lasted only one third of an inning. Mike Fields replaced Faulkner on the mound and after the second inning held the Indians scoreless. Bob Ivey lasted until the fourth when Paul Deason took over the losers.
“Joe Sasser, Calvin Smith and Mitch Kilpatrick each contributed two hits apiece to the Tiger attack which was aided considerably by sloppy Indian defensive work.”

“Greenies Whitewash McCullough 11 to 0: Wendell Hart tossed his first shut out of the season Thursday when he gave up only five hits to the same team that had beaten him with six hits four days before.
“The Greenies showed plenty of power at the plate in Thursday’s contest as they collected 16 singles off three McCullough moundsmen. Big Wade Nobles led the murderous attack with three hits in as many times at bat. Haskew Page slapped a three-run homer out of the park in the fifth inning that sent the starting hurler to the showers.
“Aided by a perfect day at the plate Thursday, Nobles pulled ahead of Edsel Johnson to capture first place in the batting averages. Nobles has an average of .455 while Johnson’s now stands at .444.”

“Friends of Mrs. Harry Monroe will be glad to know that she is improving from injuries received when she was hit in the eye by a foul ball while attending a baseball game at Brooklyn Sunday. “Evergreen Man Wins In Golf Tournament: Arthur Cunningham of Evergreen was winner of flight one in the annual invitation golf tournament of the Monroeville Golf Club held at the local course last Thursday. Thirty-eight golfers, including some from Foley, Atmore, Flomaton and Brewton, qualified for the games. Six handsome golf bags were awarded the winners of the flights and other prizes were given to the runners up and the winners of consolation in each flight.
“The tournament was declared a success from every angle. Even the rain, which had fallen steadily for the preceding weeks, held off long enough for the three rounds. The first players teed off at ten thirty o’clock and the last ones came in from the third round about four o’clock.
“Mr. C.N. Stallworth of Evergreen has the distinction of being the first man to make a whole-in-well on the Monroeville course. He found another place where the lie of the ball cannot be improved.”

“The Lions Club of Foley has addressed invitations to all of the 62 clubs in Alabama and a general invitation to all Lions to attend the annual fishing rodeo of the Izaak Walton League chapter in Baldwin County July 11 and 12.
“Every available boat for Gulf fishing will be at Burkhardt’s Landing on Bear Point, near the gulf entrance to Perdido Bay, to take rodeo contestants after tarpon and smaller migratory fish during the two-days of the annual event, in which all good sportsmen of both sexes are eligible, upon registration with Secretary Max Lawrence of the Walton League chapter, which has its headquarters in Foley.”
