“Weatherman Harry Ellis reports a trace of rain on June 2, 2.50 inches of rain on June 3 and .27 on June 7.”

“Mr. Lois Reeves was honored Tuesday night at the Pine Orchard Volunteer Fire Department for his years of service to and assistance in forming the Conecuh County Fire Control Association. Billy Mims, president of the Alabama Association of Volunteer Fire Departments and Conecuh County Commission Clerk Mildred Brown were on hand to present a plaque and a certificate of appreciation to Mr. Reeves for his determined effort in creating a countywide association.”

“Alvin H. Dees, marketing vice president for Alfa Insurance Companies’ Georgia and Mississippi operations, has been named to succeed Boyd Christenberry as executive vice president of marketing for the Alabama-based company, Alfa Insurance Companies President Goodwin L. Myrick has announced.”

“Mrs. Mary Evelyn Bethune is retiring after 20 years of service to the people of Conecuh County. ‘Mrs. B,’ as most employees of the Conecuh County Courthouse have known her for many years, worked for the Conecuh County Commission as a payroll officer and most recently was the cashier in charge of garbage collections. She was honored with a retirement party in the commission office.”

“Earl Windham reported total rainfall for the month of May was 1.01 inch. Also .60 of an inch of rain fell on June 1.”

“Navy Seaman Recruit Randy W. Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne B. Smith of P.O. Box 365, Evergreen, Ala., recently participated in the major NATO exercise ‘Dawn Patrol ‘77’
“He is serving as a crewmember aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Inchon, homeported in Norfolk, Va.
“A 1976 graduate of Evergreen High School, Smith joined the Navy in May 1976.”

“Jefferson Davis State Junior College proudly announces that Miss Beverly Dawn Wiggins has been named by the Scholarship Committee at the University of Alabama as one of 10 recipients of the Junior College Alumni Honors Scholarships.”

“Arthur H. Parsons, President of the Andrews Bank and Trust Company announced the promotion of James E. Raines III to Vice President and manager of the Georgetown, S.C. office.”

“Gray Stevens will represent Evergreen and Sparta Academy at the 40th Annual session of the American Legion Boys State on the Tuscaloosa campus of the University of Alabama June 5-9, 1977.”

“At its meeting Tuesday night the Evergreen City Council still had not reached a decision concerning the dog leash law but stated there would be a rabies clinic held in the near future. After the clinic is held, any dog found not wearing a rabies tag will be picked up by the city.”

“Mrs. Mamie A. Ellis, Evergreen, ended a long teaching career with her retirement at the close of the past school year. She taught in Conecuh County schools for 23 years and also taught at the old Baptist Orphanage in Evergreen for several years.
“Mrs. Ellis began her teaching career in the county system in 1915, teaching in the Flat Rock, Effie and Ivey schools.”

“Intersection claims one more collision: It happened Monday afternoon at ‘that intersection’ on Rural and West Front Streets at the foot of the overhead bridge. The large crowd that gathered seconds after the crash obligingly moved back to allow the photographer to get this story in picture of the dangers of driving through this busy spot.”

“The Evergreen Chamber of Commerce mailed statements for 1962-63 dues this week, according to President W.P. Price. He urged all those receiving them to remit their dues to the Chamber by return mail and save someone a trip to collect them.”

“The Repton FFA Dairy Cattle Judging team went on up the ladder last week when they took the number one spot in the state contest at Auburn. The team was awarded $250 prize money which they will use to help defray expenses to Waterloo, Iowa, in October, where they will compete for national honors. Team members are Bob Presley, J.W. Ryland, Jerry Hanks and their advisor L.E. Nichols.”

“Masonic Lodge Elects Officers For Next Year: The annual election of officers of Greening Lodge No. 53 A.F.&A.M., was held Tuesday night and the following were elected: Alvin Brewton, W.M.; T.S. Holly, S.W.; Claude Murphy, J.W.; F.L. Cardwell, Treas.; W.G. Jones, Sec.; A.K. Williams Jr., S.D.; Ray Williams, J.D., S.J. Brundage, Tiler; Herbert Mellinger, S.S.; Raymond Hayes, J.S.; A.K. Williams Sr., Chaplain; R.F. Hyde, Marshall.
“The above officers will be installed at the regular meeting June 24. St. Johns Day services will be observed on Sun., June 22, when the Masons will attend the Baptist Church in a body. Rev. Staples will preach the sermon.”

“FIRST COTTON BLOOM: The distinction of exhibiting the first cotton bloom of the 1947 season at The Courant office goes to R.F. Hyde of this city who brought the blossom in Wednesday at noon. Mr. Hyde has 100 acres of cotton planted in April, and says it looks quite promising at this time.”

“Miss Ann Price, who is a flight instructor at Van de Graaff Field at Tuscaloosa, is spending a week’s vacation at home.”

“The first remains of World War II dead to be returned to the United States will arrive in October 1947, according to information received today by the State Department of Veterans’ Affairs.
“Originally scheduled to arrive in August, the delay is a result of industrial difficulties in the production of caskets, the department has been informed.”

JUNE 9, 1932

“Masonic Conference At Castleberry July 6-7: The Conecuh County Masonic Conference will meet in annual session this year with Downing Lodge No. 580, Castleberry, Ala., on July 6 and 7. The first session will begin at 9 o’clock on the morning of the 6th. There will be no night session this paper has been informed.
“The ritualistic work will be directed by J.W. Thurmond of Castleberry, who is District Lecturer and a recognized authority in this line. A cordial invitation is issued to all Masons of this and other Conferences to attend the meetings.”

“D.S. Sanders, well known farmer living four miles north of Evergreen reports what is believed to be a record number of boll weevils to be collected from one stalk of cotton. Mr. Sanders states that on his place he has a stalk of cotton which came as a sucker from an old stalk not killed during the past winter. So far this year, he has collected a total of 40 weevils from this stalk.”

“John David Wright Jr., eldest child and only son of Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Wright of this city, died at the home on Main Street last Friday afternoon following a lingering illness which had afflicted him for the past several months.
“Had he lived until the third of July, he would have been 18 years of age. He was a student in the State Secondary Agricultural School when stricken with the disease which caused his untimely end, and would have graduated with the class that finished a few weeks ago, had he been able to continue his attendance in school.”
