Does 'The UFO Singularity' describe incident related to Evergreen UFO?

Those of you who read this column on a regular basis know that I sometimes write about UFOs. I have to confess that I’m extremely skeptical when it comes to UFO reports, but I am interested in the subject. For that reason, I read about UFOs occasionally, and every once in a while I’ll come across an exceptionally good book on the subject.

During the past week, I finished reading a great book on UFOs called “The UFO Singularity” by journalist Micah Hanks. In his book, Hanks predicts that the human race is approaching a technology “singularity,” that is, a point where our technology will improve so fast that the results will be unpredictable. Hanks goes on to offer a number of theories about how this relates to UFOs, including the possibility that they could be time travelers from our future.

Published on Dec. 26, 2012 by New Page Books, this 288-page book also included a story that many in Evergreen might find interesting. The story details how on a Sunday in 1973, a 20-year-old named Mike Reese, two women and three children were driving down Highway 23/42, just south of Atlanta, when about five miles outside the town of Locust Grove, Ga. they saw an unusual, bright light hovering in the sky. The light began moving over a mountain ridge to the east, and Reese initially thought it was a helicopter.

As Reese drove along, it became apparent that his vehicle and the light would eventually cross paths. He continued toward the light and eventually drove up to a power substation that was surrounded by a chain link fence. They looked up and saw that the strange object was hovering over the substation.

Reese described the object as a “massive, disk-shaped object with colored lights along its perimeter, hovering in perfect silence above the power substation and probably in full view of any commuters on the nearby Interstate.” Reese estimated that the craft was at least 100 to 150 feet in diameter and was 200 to 250 feet off the ground. The craft remained for another few minutes, hovering silently and motionless, before eventually drifting west and out of sight.

I was especially interested in this incident because it happened just a matter of days after arguably the most unusual incident in the history of Evergreen. Many of you will be familiar with this tale, but for those of you who’ve never heard it, here are the details.

Just after midnight on Oct. 16, 1973, two Evergreen police officers and a police dispatcher witnessed a “big, real unusual light” in the sky behind Evergreen City Hall, in the direction of Cemetery Street and Martin Luther King Drive. They described the object as “odd shaped” and watched it for 15 to 20 minutes before it disappeared. The incident was reported in The Courant and by WSFA-TV in Montgomery. The story was eventually broadcast nationwide.

In the end, if you’re interested in UFOs, I recommend that you pick up a copy of “The UFO Singularity.” I found the science and technology matters described in the book just as interesting as the UFO material, so it contains more than a little that many of you would probably find interesting.
